A Day in the Gower A Day in the Gower Two friends, Elin and Morgan, are staying with family in Swansea at the end of May. They want to spend one of their days on the Gower peninsula, walking across the famous Worm’s Head causeway. You can only walk across when the tide is low, so they have to plan their day out carefully. They do not have a car, so they hope to catch the bus from Swansea Bus station to Rhossili. From Rhossili, it’s aBout a half hour walk to the causeway. In total, it is a 7 km walk from Rhossili to Worm’s Head and back. They hope to spend a couple of hours on Worm’s Head. Elin has found the bus timetable, and Morgan has downloaded a tide chart for Worm’s Head for the coming week. The weather forecast looks fine for Tuesday the 26th and for Friday the 29th, But there will Be rain on Wednesday and Thursday. Plan a day out for Elin and Morgan, using the timetables and the tidal chart, choosing which day they should travel, and which buses they should catch going there and coming back. You must also try to work out how long they can spend on Worm’s Head, and what time they must leave to get safely Back on the mainland Before the tide rises again. Note Morgan realises that the tidal prediction chart gives times in UTC (Co-ordinated Universal Time), which is the same as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). However, it’s summer, so the UK is using British Summer Time which is one hour later. This means if low tide is shown at 17:00 UTC, it is 18:00 BST. How does this affect their journey? 1 Tidal Prediction Chart: Worm’s Head Times shown are UTC. Add 1 hour for BST. It is possiBle to cross over to the Worm for 2½ hours either side of low tide. Please Be aware that these are only predictions, and local weather may change the safe times to cross by as much as 30 minutes. For those of you not staying with us you are welcome to use this walk but as there are no rights of way through the grounds,please just park and start the walk from the national trust car park in Penmaen. Distance covered: miles Average time: 3 hours Terrain: Easy under foot but Bishopston valley can be very muddy. Directions: Walk out of the front door of the house and turn right, walk past the end of the house and up the corral (fenced in area). Follow the track through the corral and along the old Church path, you will pass the trout ponds on your right, and valley gardens on your left immediately after this there is a cross roads – take the track straight on across the fields and through the woods. At the woodlands end you will cross a style next to a gate, here the track will bear left taking you past a small pink cottage end on to the road and then trough a grassy car park. When you reach the tarmac village lane turn left over the cattle grid.

Spectacular views abound and the sea air will ensure you sleep well at the end of it! We begin at the Gower Heritage Centre based around a working 12th century water mill where it’s worth spending some time fi nding out about the history of the area before setting off . Directions From the Heritage Centre, cross the ford then take the road to the right. Walk along for about a mile until you come to the entrance to Park Wood (Coed y Parc) on your right.
