THE RECORD of FANBO Introduction Fan Li Was, with His 'A6G*+B +%;A* THE RECORD OF FANBO Introduction Fan Li was, with his friend and colleague Grandee Zhong, one of the most important advisors to the great King Goujian of Yue. In spite of his signal role in the history of the con#ict between the kingdoms of Wu and Yue virtually nothing is known of his life. !is is perhaps a re#ec- tion of the tradition that Fan Li came from a humble background in the kingdom of Chu—unlike other important ministers who played a signif- icant part in these events, such as Prime Minister Pi and Wu Zixu, who were both of noble origins and whose ancestors had played an impor- tant role in international a"airs for many generations. !e “Record of Fanbo” represents an early stage in the development of Fan Li’s biog- raphy. !e focus of this chapter is on his achievements as a poor and unknown individual who raised himself entirely through his own e"orts to the position of trusted advisor to one of the greatest of all rulers in the Spring and Autumn period, King Goujian of Yue. Fan Li is cred- ited in this, as in other chapters of the Yuejue shu, with a crucial role in supporting his master through the diDcult years following his sur- render at Kuaiji. He is also said to have been instrumental in planning the ?nal victory over the kingdom of Wu in 42=>'+. What is more, unlike his companion Grandee Zhong, Fan Li is supposed to have le- Yue in time to escape the suspicions of his ruler, to live a long and happy life. Despite his humble origins, Fan Li would prove to be an exception- ally important ?gure in traditional Chinese literature and popular reli- gion, quite apart from his historical signi?cance. Although there are few hints of it in texts prior to the Age of Disunion, Fan Li would eventu- ally become the hero of one of the great love stories of ancient China. According to legend, he was the lover of the beautiful Xi Shi, and set aside their relationship that she might be sent to seduce King Fuchai of Wu for the bene?t of the kingdom of Yue. A-er the fall of Wu he was said to have spiritedr he away from the ?nal cataclysm. !is romantic story of 035 'A6G*+B +%;A* true love sacri?ced for the national good was to prove enormously pop- ular throughout the imperial era, and is known in countless versions.1 However, this romantic legend was not the only way in which Fan Li was remembered. He was the putative author of a number of texts on cra-, agriculture and ?sh-farming,2 as well as the author of Fan Li licai zhifu ǝã#Ѐ½ (Fan Li’s Twelve Principles for GettingכڻҬمshier faze ׹ Rich).3 Unfortunately, of the many texts ascribed to Fan Li in catalogues of the imperial library, none survive. In the imperial era, this seems to have developed into a military (wu ϑ) and a civil (wen ̗) tradition. !ere was a single military god of wealth, Zhao -Gongming ̷ۛ, who was said to have #ed from the Qin and become a wealthy metal worker. !ere are two civil gods of wealth, Prince Bigan and Fan Li. !e choice of the ?rst is very mysterious, and apparently based on his generosity and sel# essness, rather than any particular connection with ?nancial astuteness. Fan Li’s connection with wealth is more obvious. !e civil god of wealth is conventionally depicted in oDcial robes, holding a ruyi, and with mountains of gold and silver behind him.     'A6G*+B *+) THE RECORD OF THE LANDS OF YUE Introduction !is chapter describes key sites in the kingdom of Yue, including King Goujian’s capital, which was one of China’s oldest recorded planned cities.1 !is chapter emphasises the impact King Goujian had on the land- scape of this region: virtually every building mentioned is said to have been erected either for his personal use or as part of the war e"ort he ini- tiated to defeat the kingdom of Wu. In this text the authors repeatedly link landscape features of northern Zhejiang province to events from the life of the greatest king of Yue. However these attributions (in the absence of further evidence) must remain largely speculative. Numerous geograph- ical features and ancient buildings south of the Yangtze river have been linked to famous ?gures from the con#ict between Wu, Yue and Chu, and sometimes these attributions have been conclusively disproved.2 It is important to stress that unlike King Helü’s capital (modern Suzhou), 1 !e site of King Goujian’s capital is now the city of Shaoxing in Zhejiang province. !e name Shaoxing commemorates a turn in the fortunes of the Southern Song dynasty. In 0015, the capital of the Northern Song dynasty Bianliang ϰΔ (now known as Kaifeng –ݶǭ) fell to the Jurchen Jin dynasty. !e new emperor, Song Gaozong LJࠆlj (r. 0012 0051), moved south to evade capture, and established his capital at a series of southern dž (now known as Hangzhou ʹș), Pingjiang ȳϭ (modernט cities, including Lin’an ș) and Yuezhou ۚș (Shaoxing).

    Performers Shih-Hua Judy Yeh Shih-Hua (Judy) Yeh, acclaimed Guqin and Guzheng Master, is both Founder and Director of the Taiwanese Music Ensemble of New York. She is also Founder of the SPOTLIGHT New York Guqin School. Shih-Hua has specialized in playing professional concert performances on many varied Chinese musical instruments. She is a highly respected music educator and in 2011 was named an official judge of music examinations by the China Conservatory of Music and Chinese Music Organization. She has also been a lecturer of the Jinwen University of Science and Technology in A Night of Traditional Chinese Music Taipei. Yeh graduated from the Taipei National University of the Art (TNUA) with a Guqin Major. She later earned her Master’s degree in Ethnomusicology from Sheffield University in the UK. Yeh is a member of Water Stage Ensemble based at TNUA and has performed both nationally and internationally. She has won numerous awards at distinguished Chinese music event, and she has been invited to perform at such highly honored and respected professional venues as Lincoln Center, Merkin Hall and Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall. Wei-Yang (Andy) Lin Wei-Yang (Andy) Lin, born in Taiwan, holds his Bachelor and Master’s Degrees from October 16 at 8-9PM The Juilliard School. He won the Top Prize in the Juilliard Viola Concerto Competition and subsequently made his Avery Fisher Hall solo debut. He is a member of the award Lang Recital Hall (4th Floor, Hunter College North) winning string quartet, the Amphion String Quartet. The quartet was a winner of the 2011 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition and was recently selected to join the roster of the Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two for a three-year Reception to Follow 9-10PM residency.

    1.Cohen, Speaking to History 5/13/08 1:52 PM Page 1 one The Goujian Story in Antiquity before looking at the variety of ways in which the figure of Gou- jian assumed meaning for Chinese in the twentieth century, we need to ex- amine the story itself. In reconstructing the Goujian story, I have not been unduly concerned with the historicity of particular incidents or details.1 The impact of the story in the twentieth century, as noted in the preface, derived not from its accuracy as history but from its power as narrative.2 Nor have I attempted to trace the evolution of the story as it wended its way from ancient times on up to the end of the imperial era. This is not an exercise in Chinese literary history. What I want to do in this opening chapter is establish a rough baseline for what was known about the Gou- jian narrative in the first century c.e., the time when the first full-fledged version of the story (of which we are aware) appeared. To this end, I have consulted, either in the original or in translation, such basic ancient sources as Zuozhuan (Zuo’s Tradition), Guoyu (Legends of the States), Sima Qian’s Shiji (Records of the Historian), and Lüshi chunqiu (The Annals of Lü Buwei).3 However, I have relied most heavily on the later (and highly fic- tionalized) Wu Yue chunqiu (The Annals of Wu and Yue), originally com- piled by the Eastern Han author Zhao Ye from 58 to 75 c.e.4 I have done this for two reasons.

By comparing the inscription with representations of the deceased in offi cial sources, the article reveals that the tomb inscription presents a critical attitude toward the moral standards of conventional historiography, and demonstrates a shifting moral geography in the works of Song historians. Th is new standard increasingly excluded nomadic peoples from the newly imagined political body, and excluded with them the pragmatic diplomacy that had characterized the politics of the Five Dynasties. The nation is learning to embrace a “third industrial revolution” (Rifkin, 2011) while banking the economic capital of the carbon-dependent manufacturing economy. Urbanisation is also driving change and consumer culture (Gerth, 2010). Most of China’s high-value creative service industries are found in the large urban centres of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen in the coastal provinces. China’s second-tier cities, including Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, are also seeking to make capital out of culture, albeit with different strategies than the coastal hubs. The Hangzhou metropolitan area is the fourth largest in China, with 8.8 million residents. Zhejiang province was once known as the “land of rice and fish.” However, with the increased emphasis on productivity in China’s economic reforms since 1978, the province became an economic heavyweight, characterised by small and medium-sized enterprises often working together to produce complementary products. As more growth occurs in second-tier cities like Hangzhou and the environmental impact of the manufacturing industries are more apparent, service industries are gaining momentum and support from government think tanks to support growth.

Chapter One describes the methodological basis. Many ancient Chinese texts underwent periods of oral transmission, but the effect on their form and content has been little researched. Theme and formula are important for understanding the development of these texts. The hegemons are also investigated for the degree to which they conform to greater patterns: the Indo-European models of the hero and good ruler.
