Former bench boss Dave Snyder, in whose honor the Wesleyan ice rink is now named, won 273 games before retiring and giving way to two-time NESCAC Coach of the Year Chris Potter. Potter led the 2006-07 Cardinals to a 9-6-4 record in conference play and their first-ever NESCAC tournament home game, and his 2010-11 squad became just the second eighth seed in NESCAC tourna- ment play (in all sports) to upset the top seed in the first round with a 5-2 win at Hamilton. Wesleyan ice hockey players also receive a first-rate education at one of the nation’s preeminent liberal arts institutions. Wesleyan is among the most selective institutions in the country, having admitted just 23 percent of applicants for the class of 2015. The Wesleyan curriculum features no course requirements, a rarity among both large universitities and liberal arts colleges. The student-faculty ratio is 9:1, and Wes- leyan’s faculty includes a Nobel laureate, Pulitzer Prize winner, MacArthur (“genius grant”) fellow, and numerous recipients of Rockefeller, Guggenheim, and other national prizes for teaching and research. The Wesleyan science faculty rank first among liberal arts colleges in federal grants received, receiving more than twice as much funding as the next highest school, and also rank first in H-index, which measures both number of publications and the number of times those publications are cited. Wesleyan is committed to meeting 100 percent of demonstrated financial need. Admissions are need- blind, and Weleyan students received over $41 million in financial aid during the 2010-11 academic year. 2011-12 OUTLOOK With the advent of the home-and-away round-robin NESCAC schedule in 2011-12, Wesleyan will be looking to pick up where it left off in 2010-11 when the new campaign kicks off Friday, Nov. 18 with a home weekend against Conn. College and Tufts. The Jumbos will be the opponent on Saturday, Nov. 19. Last year, the Cardinals went 5-4 against NESCAC teams during the regular season and 8-10-1 in league play with games against the ECAC East counting in the league standings. Entering the NESCAC tournament as the #8 seed, the Cardinals marched to #1 Hamilton and upset the Continentals in the opening round of the NES- CAC playoffs, 5-2. Then at Williams for the semi-finals, the Cardinals carried a 2-1 lead into the final period but fell 3-2 in overtime. The Cardinals and Ephs had played to the same result during the regular season. Wesleyan returns nine of the 11 players from 2010-11 who cracked into double-digits for scoring, giving Cardi- nal mentor Chris Potter reason to say “I feel the offense will be our strength; we are extremely deep and experi- enced up front.” Leading the way are 20-point scorers Nik Tasiopoulos ’14, Geoff Mucha ’12 and Keith Buehler ’14. Tasiopoulos and Mucha tied for the team lead in goals with 12 while Buehler was one of three Cardinals with seven goals and also generated a team-best-tying 13 assists. Also back with seven tallies a year ago is team co-captain Adam Kaiser ’13. Fellow co-captain Tom Salah ’12 collected six goals and nine assists for 15 points and has 49 career points over three seasons. Tops among the blue-line crew in scoring is Chris MacDonald ’13, who is back after tying for the team lead in assists with 13. Rounding out the returning players in the 10-point-or-more department are Nick Craven ’13, Tommy Hartnett ’14 and John Guay ’13. Also back after seeing plenty of action in 2010-11 are defensemen Micah Ehiorobo ’13 and Brad Improta ’14 along with forwards Ryan White ’13 and Donald Kleckner ’13. Addi- tional returnees and a corps of top-notch newcomers will round out the very capable Cardinal skating crew. In goal, the Cardinals have both starters back from a year ago as Matt Hadge ’13 and Glenn Stowell ’13 split time almost evenly with Hadge posting a .926 save percentage and 2.52 GAA with a 6-5-1 record while Stowell posted a .904 save percentage, 3.13 GAA and 4-7-2 mark. Coach Potter commented, “We are extremely fortu- nate to have two quality goaltenders and their ability to be good teammates for each other as they compete for the job. They both have played well and I look forward for that to continue.” In January and February, Wesleyan will play nothing but NESCAC games as 14 of the 18 scheduled con- ference affairs come up consecutively after playing just Conn, Tufts, Amherst and Hamilton during the first semester. 2011-12 SCHEDULE/2010-11 RESULTS 2011-12 SCHEDULE 2010-11 RESULTS (10-12-3) Nov. 18 (Fri.) • Announcing the Eastern Hockey League
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 5, 2013 Announcing The Eastern Hockey League BOSTON, Mass. – The new top junior league on the east coast is the Eastern Hockey League (EHL), which is comprised of 18 top-level organizations dedicated to the goal of college advancement. EHL teams are fully committing to the USAH Hockey Junior Model and all EHL organizations have a rich history of producing tomorrow’s NCAA and NHL stars. The EHL operating standards will mirror many USA Hockey Tier II standards and will guarantee that each player is given the best opportunity to receive maximum exposure to NCAA and NHL scouts. The strategic location of each organization will allow the EHL teams to keep player tuition down, minimize travel and allow scouts to attend regular season games in addition to the league showcase games. Former NHLer and U.S. Olympian Mark Kumpel, who spent the past five years coaching and managing a successful Junior hockey team, will serve as the EHL’s Director of Hockey Operations. “This group of coaches and owners are the best in Junior hockey,” said Kumpel. “The coaching staff of the EHL rivals that of any junior league in the country.” Current EHL head coaches include former college and professional players (see team web sites for individual bios). For players and parents looking for clarity and solid information about the Junior hockey experience, these 18 East Coast organizations are excited to form the EHL with the intention of producing college-bound hockey players and providing high standards of operation to assure a quality player environment.
