However, not only has the virus made our world worse, but also many other disasters like the Australian wildfires, heavy floods in many countries, and the Beirut chemical factory explosion aggravated our world. Adding insult to injury, the California Wildfire made people astonished due to its damage to our society and environment. California was (and in some places still is) covered with extremely orange skies, massive smoke clouds, and worsening air quality. This has affected about 70,000 people who had to evacuate from the city. Even though California was the city that was most affected by the wildfires, other states and countries have been damaged too. As the climate heated up, many other states in the West, including Oregon and Colorado, have been facing larger, more destructive fires and more perilous air quality from wildfire smoke. The wildfires seem to cause droughts and more damaged buildings in a lot of places. Not only is the US suffering from the wildfires, but also at least 5 Canadian provinces were covered by the fire’s smoke. Because of the harmful air quality, numerous people had a hard time breathing without masks. Fortunately, the smoky air has disappeared due to heavy rainfall and we are hoping that this is the end of the fires and poor air quality! CHUSEOK MADELEINE GROVES Thanksgiving and Halloween aren't the only big holidays in October. Chuseok - similar to American Thanksgiving - is one of Korea's biggest holidays. This holiday is celebrated by both North and South Korea on the 15th day and 8th month of the lunar calendar on the full moon and this celebration lasts a total of 3 days. I talked to two SJB Korean International students about what Chuseok is. They said that usually to celebrate Chuseok, they will eat Korean food, meet with family, celebrate their ancestors, and play games. One of the games is similar to monopoly and in another one everyone holds hands and spins like a merry-go-round. The SBJ students celebrate differently while in Canada. They call their family back home and eat Korean food. Happy Harvest! 5 ISSUE. 4 | OCTOBER 2020 LET’S KEEP ON LEARNING KOREAN! DOROTHY JUNG Have you ever heard about Monty Hall’s problem? It was first introduced in an American TV show, “Let’s Make A Deal”, by the host Monty Hall. This is a probability puzzle that confuses people, especially when people think intuitively. This is a direct quote from the TV show: “Suppose you’re on a game show, and you’re given the choice of three doors. Behind one door is a car, behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say #1, and the host, who knows what’s behind the doors, opens another door, say #3, which has a goat. He says to you, "Do you want to pick door #2?" Is it to your advantage to switch your choice of doors?” Basically, you get to choose one of the doors, and when you choose one, the host will open one of the remaining doors that has a goat behind it. Regardless of which one you choose – whether a goat or car – he will open it. Do you think that switching your choice is a good idea? Or do you think that you should stick with your initial choice? The answer to this problem is that it is advantageous to change your choice. This brain teaser can be explained in various ways, and I will introduce the most well-known method to get to the solution. 1. Percentage One way to get to the solution to this problem is to use percentage. When you are choosing one of the three doors, you are choosing a door with 33% of the possibility that the car will be inside the door you’ve chosen. Next, the host will open one of the two doors remaining, which has a goat inside. Now, there are two doors left, and you need to determine whether or not to change your choice. This part is where most people get confused.

Submarine Study Notes Releasing ©Optimum Directed by: Richard Ayoade Certificate: 15 Running time: 97 mins Release date: 18 March 2011 Synopsis: Submarine is an offbeat comedy about a fifteen-year-old, Oliver Tate, who is obsessed with books, films and…a girl called Jordana. Desperate to lose his virginity while equally desperate to save his parents’ crumbling marriage, Oliver takes us on a quirky and strangely beautiful journey of love and loss through the industrial landscape of South Wales. These Study Notes are intended for students of Film and Media Studies at GCSE and AS/A2 or equivalent. The subject matter of the film also touches on aspects of the curriculum for PSHE. 1 www.filmeducation.org www.nationalschoolsfilmweek.org ©Film Education July 2011. Film Education is not responsible for the content of external websites. Before Viewing Submarine and music Music plays a particularly important part in Submarine. The film features a number of original songs written and performed by Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys. The film contains long wordless sequences underscored by these songs and, understandably, many critics have compared these sections to music videos. Interestingly, most of Ayoade’s directorial experience before Submarine was in music videos. z What sort of feeling and impact can music video have and what effect could a music video-style sequence achieve in a film? z Can you think of other films which feature extended montage sequences that are quite like music videos? z Take a look at Ayoade’s music videos for Kasabian’s ‘Vlad the Impaler’, The Last Shadow Puppets’ ‘My Mistakes’, Vampire Weekend’s ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa’ and Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’.

  • Comedic Indexes (See Bell 2001A, 2001B)
Indexes: comedic, humorous and laughable (for all the right reasons) Paula Clarke Bain, Marketing Director, Society of Indexers The set -up An index can provide an entertaining conclusion to a book in its own right. Some indexes can be unfortunately laughable for entirely the wrong reasons, but many authors and indexers choose to add deliberate humour to this final part of the book, and some do this very well. Over the last couple of years, I have been writing a series of blog posts on the comedy book index on my website ( baindex.org ), some of which have become articles for The Indexer journal (Bain 2017, 2018), continuing the fine tradition of Hazel Bell’s reviews of comedic indexes (see Bell 2001a, 2001b). I’m pleased to present an overview of some recent examples for this issue of Catalogue and Index . I have always had a great interest in comedy in my leisure time, and I have indexed a lot of books in my work hours, having been a full -time freelancer since 2001. It’s been a great delight to me, as both a comedy and indexing fan, to see that many of my favourite comedy writers have recently produced books that have plenty of humorous material in their indexes. These include Francis Wheen, Charlie Brooker, Richard Ayoade, and the writers of the Alan Partridge and Steven Toast characters, all of which I review below. Strange indexes indeed: Francis Wheen The earliest of these were two books by Francis Wheen, journalist and deputy editor of Private Eye magazine. How Mumbo -Jumbo Conquered the World was published in 2004 and Strange Days Indeed followed in 2009.
