  • History & Honours Board
History & Honours Board History of the event The New Zealand Women’s Match Racing Championships have been held at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron since 2000 when Amy Waring representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron was the first winner and received the Leith Mossman Memorial Trophy. Leith Mossman - an inspiration to us all! Leith Mossman packed more into her 45 years than most of us would in a lifetime. An avid sailor, she raced on many yachts in Auckland, including Krasna (Townsend 36), The V Team (Farr 1020), Rhythm (S&S 45) to Fiji, Brightstone - Sydney-Hobart, Share Delight and Waiwera Naturally Hot (Mumm 30). Leith was always full of enthusiasm and fun, whether racing with the boys, with the girls, matchracing, fleet racing or offshore - an inspiration to us all. Unfortunately she lost her battle with breast cancer in 1998. The Leith Mossman Memorial was donated to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron by the New Zealand Women’s Yachting Trust in 2000 in memory of our friend Leith. The Trophy is the principal prize for the annual New Zealand Women’s Match Racing Championships. In 2002 MATIS joined and added a feminine touch to the prizegiving with their donated MATIS product for the competitors. The RNZYS intermitantly hosted the NZ Women’s Match Race Championships between 2010-2018. In 2019 the event was revitalised hosting 5 international teams. The 2020 event saw a great increase in women participation hosting 7 New Zealand teams despite a number of restrictions and barriers due to Covid-19 regulations and guidelines.

  • Anna Kjellberg Won the New York Women's Invitational!
July 14 2013, press release from Women’s International Match Racing Series Anna Kjellberg won the New York Women’s Invitational! – but opponent Lucy Macgregor runs to the top of the WIMR Series’ standings… The finals of the New York Women’s Invitational ended with a 2 – 2 score between Anna Kjellberg of Sweden and Lucy Macgregor of Great Britain, when lack of wind caused the time limit to expire and the organizers at Oakcliff Sailing could not run the final “winner-take-it-all” race. As Kjellberg won the round-robins, she takes her first event title on the Women’s International Match Racing Series: “I can hardly imagine how well we’ve sailed this week. My girls have been absolutely magnificent. I’m so happy to helm a boat with such an extraordinary crew” an overwhelmed Anna laughed after her victory. The final day of the New York Women’s Invitational, the penultimate event of the inaugural 2013 Women’s International Match Racing Series, started with light winds but yet fairly stable conditions in the morning. As the wind dropped after two flights, the race committee decided to move the course and continue racing in more fluctuating conditions closer to shore: “We sailed the first two races without any mistakes and with a great focus, coming off the line in good positions and then being able to race our own way round the course, stretching our lead further. When we lost the third race the conditions were OK but not more, and then in the fourth race it was more like a lottery to get the puffs” Anna Kjellberg comments, obviously satisfied with the outcome of the day.
