Mal vergeben. Der Preis ist durch Beschluss des Rates vom 8.11.2001 mit 15.000 € dotiert. Nach § 4 der Satzung für den Literaturpreis der Stadt Dortmund – Nelly-Sachs-Preis beruft der Rat auf Vorschlag des Kulturausschusses für jede Preisverleihung drei Fachpreisrichter/innen. Folgende Fachpreisrichter/innen werden vorgeschlagen, die wegen ihrer beruflichen Tätigkeit über profunde Kenntnisse der deutschen und internationalen Literatur verfügen: Ina Hartwig, geb. 1963 in Hamburg, studierte Romanistik und Germanistik in Avignon und Berlin. Ihre Dissertation über „Sexuelle Poetik“, eine vergleichende Arbeit über Proust, Musil, Genet und Jelinek, erschien 1998 im Fischer Verlag. Sie war Herausgeberin des „Kursbuch“ (2002-2005) und Gastprofessorin in St. Louis (USA) und in Göttingen. -

In einer Zeit, geprägt von wachsender sozialer Ungleichheit, zunehmendem Populismus und gegenseitiger Abschottung sind wir heraus- gefordert, diese Frage neu zu beantworten. Kunst und Kultur können Vielfalt sichtbar machen, Respekt und Toleranz ein- fordern, Grenzen überwinden und Wandlungsprozesse mitgestalten. Und wie ist eine Kulturpolitik zu gestalten, die Kunst und Kultur Freiräume gewährt und Strukturen zu ihrer Stärkung bereitstellt? Welche Weichenstel- lungen sind hier nötig? Diese und andere Fragen diskutierten am 20./21. April 2018 Akteur_innen der Kulturpolitik, Kulturschaffende aus allen Sparten und Verbandsvertreter_innen im Rahmen der 6. It acknowledges that the production of cultural value in any kind of setting is not always just a social process, but it is also always politicised and leaning towards the prevailing social power. The prize-winning short stories are highly influenced or dependent on the material conditions of the stories’ production and consumption. The content is shaped by the prize, its requirements, rules, and regulations as well as the politics associated with the specific prize. As James English (2005) asserts, “[t]here is no evading the social and political freight of a global award at a time when global markets determine more and more the fate of local symbolic economies” (298). -

Report on the 2015 Caine Prize and related activities 2015 Prize “Africa’s most important literary award.” International Herald Tribune This year’s Prize was won by Namwali Serpell from Zambia, for her story ‘The Sack’ published in Africa39 (Bloomsbury, London, 2014). Namwali Serpell’s first published story, ‘Muzungu’, was shortlisted for the 2010 Caine Prize for African Writing. In 2014, she was selected as one of the most promising African writers for the Africa39 Anthology, a project of the Hay Festival. Since winning the Caine Prize in July, Chatto & Windus in the UK and Hogarth in the US have bought world rights to her debut novel The Old Drift. For the first time in the history of the Caine Prize, the winner shared her prize money with the other shortlisted writers. Channel 4 and British Film: An Assessment of Industrial and Cultural Impact, 1982-1998 Laura Mayne This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth. September 2014 i Abstract This thesis is an historical investigation of Channel 4’s influence on the British film industry and on British film culture between 1982 and 1998. Combining archival research with interview testimony and secondary literature, this thesis presents the history of a broadcaster’s involvement in British film production, while also examining the cultural and industrial impact of this involvement over time. This study of the interdependence of film and television will aim to bring together aspects of what have hitherto been separate disciplinary fields, and as such will make an important contribution to film and television studies. In order to better understand this interdependence, this thesis will offer some original ideas about the relationship between film and television, examining the ways in which Channel 4’s funding methods led to new production practices. Aside from the important part the Channel played in funding (predominantly low-budget) films during periods when the industry was in decline and film finance was scarce, this partnership had profound effects on British cinema in the 1980s and 1990s. In exploring these effects, this thesis will look at the ways in which the film funding practices of the Channel changed the landscape of the film industry, offered opportunities to emerging new talent, altered perceptions of British film culture at home and abroad, fostered innovative aesthetic practices and brought new images of Britain to cinema and television screens. -
