Let ‘Em Have It “L” In 1995, fresh off the success of Nas’s landmark debut album Illmatic Includes 18” X 24” poster the year prior, Columbia Records released Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & with first verse from “Put It On” Dangerouz, the first LP by a relatively unknown Harlem MC named Big (as seen below) L. Few at the time would realize that Lifestylez — which was only a modest commercial success at the time — would go on to be consid- ered a true classic of the era, comparable to Illmatic itself. Armed with a cocky Uptown attitude, a sharp wit and production from the likes of Lord Finesse, Buckwild and Showbiz, Big L established himself as one of New York’s Hip Hop heavyweights with an album that balanced radio appeal with uncompromising hardcore lyricism. From the smooth sounds of “M.V.P.” to raw posse cuts like “8 Iz Enuff” and “Da Graveyard” (which featured a rookie MC from Brooklyn by the name of Jay-Z), Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerouz solidified Big L’s status as a Hip Hop legend despite being the only studio album released prior to his tragic death in 1999. In order to build better intelli- gent systems capable of processing environmental data accurately, current research is focusing on algorithms which try to model the types of process- ing that occur naturally in the human brain. In the domain of computer vision, these approaches to classification are being applied to areas such as facial recognition, object detection, motion tracking, and others. This project investigates the extension of these types of perceptual clas- sification techniques to the realm of acoustic data. As part of this effort, an algorithm for audio fingerprinting using principal component analysis for feature extraction and classification was developed and tested.

Professa RAp Monday - Thursday, 6:30-8:30, Craig-Lee 252 http://350hiphop.blogspot.com/ In its rise to the top of the American popular music scene, Hip-hop has taken on all comers, and issued beatdown after beatdown. Yet how many of its fans today know the origins of the music? Sure, people might have heard something of Afrika Bambaataa or Grandmaster Flash, but how about the Last Poets or Grandmaster CAZ? For this class, we’ve booked a ride on the wayback machine which will take us all the way back to Hip-hop’s precursors, including the Blues, Calypso, Ska, and West African griots. From there, we’ll trace its roots and routes through the ‘parties in the park’ in the late 1970’s, the emergence of political Hip-hop with Public Enemy and KRS-One, the turn towards “gangsta” style in the 1990’s, and on into the current pantheon of rappers. Along the way, we’ll take a closer look at the essential elements of Hip-hop culture, including Breaking (breakdancing), Writing (graffiti), and Rapping, with a special look at the past and future of turntablism and digital sampling. Our two required textbook are Bradley and DuBois’s Anthology of Rap (Yale University Press) and Neal and Forman’s That's the Joint: The Hip-Hop Studies Reader are both available at the RIC campus store. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility.     Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 122–135 Research Article Adam de Paor-Evans* The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0012 Received January 27, 2018; accepted June 2, 2018 Abstract: In the early 1980s, an important facet of hip hop culture developed a style of music known as electro-rap, much of which carries narratives linked to science fiction, fantasy and references to arcade games and comic books. The aim of this article is to build a critical inquiry into the cultural and socio- political presence of these ideas as drivers for the productions of electro-rap, and subsequently through artists from Newcleus to Strange U seeks to interrogate the value of science fiction from the 1980s to the 2000s, evaluating the validity of science fiction’s place in the future of hip hop. Theoretically underpinned by the emerging theories associated with Afrofuturism and Paul Virilio’s dromosphere and picnolepsy concepts, the article reconsiders time and spatial context as a palimpsest whereby the saturation of digitalisation becomes both accelerator and obstacle and proposes a thirdspace-dromology. In conclusion, the article repositions contemporary hip hop and unearths the realities of science fiction and closes by offering specific directions for both the future within and the future of hip hop culture and its potential impact on future society. Undoubtedly, space has various functions in hip-hop music, among which its potential to express the group identity seems to be of the utmost importance. The goal of this paper is to examine selected rap lyrics which are rooted in the urban landscape: “N.Y. State of Mind” by Nas, “H.O.O.D” by Masta Ace, and “Street Struck,” in order to elaborate on the significance of space in hip-hop music. Interestingly, spaces such as the city as a whole, a neighborhood, and a particular street or even block which are referred to in the rap lyrics mentioned above express oneUMCS and the same broader category of urban environment, thus, words con- nected to urban spaces are often employed interchangeably. Keywords: hip-hop, space, urbanscape. Music has always been deeply rooted in everyday life of African American commu- nities, and from the very beginning it has been connected with certain spaces. If one takes into account slave songs chanted in the fields (often considered the first examples of rapping), or Jazz Era during which most blacks no longer worked on the plantations but in big cities, it seems that music and place were not only inseparable but also nat- urally harmonized.
