Theater is a deeply paradoxical art form: Seen at once as socially constitutive and promoting mass conformity, it is also criticized as denaturalizing, decentering, etiolating, queering, feminizing. -

UNDERSTANDING THE AESTHETICS AND MATERIALITY OF VER SACRUM, THE SEMINAL MAGAZINE OF THE VIENNA SECESSION by Rita K. Laszlo B.A., The University of British Columbia, 2014 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Germanic Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2017 © Rita K. Laszlo, 2017 Abstract The following Master’s thesis discusses the cultural-political agenda, the artistic standpoints, and the materiality of the Vienna Secessionist magazine, Ver Sacrum (1898-1903). Special attention is given to the composition of the pages, text, and the surrounding illustrations. Despite resembling the prevailing notion of Gesamtkunstwerk, its publishing has less to do with a total work of art and more with a total artistic sensibility. This sensibility is formed by the magazine’s purpose as a promotional magazine of artists campaigning for social, cultural, and political recognition and influence. A critical reading of the magazine’s first volume provides the basic understanding of this artistic sensibility, or Kunstempfinden, a recurring and leading concept throughout the issues. Kunstempfinden, also suggesting a focus on the creation of individual attitudes and meanings in relation to the arts, unites aesthetics and materiality and serves as a political tactic of the Secessionists. Thus, aesthetics and the work of art itselfare understated to the extent that they are there to mediate a prescribed meaning or sensibility. Namely, the magazine devoted itself to a cultural mission of dictating how art, culture, the Secessionist artist, or the Viennese individual should be perceived by society. -

MR EVANS Mr Speaker it is with regret that this House records the passing of Britney Quintal Christian who sadly passed away on the 8th June. Britney was born in October 1993 the daughter of April and Darren. Britney was the most loyal sister to Dylan and Carissa and was so proud to become an Aunt to Taj and later Zya. She will be remembered by her friends as a powerful and influential young girl. Brit was a straight shooter and knew what she wanted in life. “She was orn a mission”. At three years old Brit was already on her motor bike. A girl of action, dedication, determination, little stubborn and always in momentum. Brit did nothing by halves. Brit grew up on Norfolk with the freedom of youth offered to all at Carscade Heights, surrounded by carefully constructed shortcuts of holes through and under hedges between the houses of her extended family and friends. -

Ryan Joseph O’Byrne, 21 September 2016 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines contemporary entanglements between two cosmo-ontological systems within one African community. The first system is the indigenous cosmology of the Acholi community of Pajok, South Sudan; the other is the world religion of evangelical Protestantism. Christianity has been in the region around 100 years, and although the current religious field represents a significant shift from earlier compositions, the continuing effects of colonial and early missionary encounters have had significant impact. This thesis seeks to understand the cosmological transformations involved in all these encounters. This thesis provides the first in-depth account of South Sudanese Acholi – a group almost entirely absent from the ethnographic record. However, its largest contributions come through wider theoretical and ethnographic insights gained in attending to local Acholi cosmological, ontological, and experiential orientations. These contributions are: firstly, the connection of Melanesian ideas of agency and personhood to Africa, demonstrating not only the relational nature of Acholi personhood but an understanding of agency acknowledging nonhuman actors; secondly, a demonstration of the primarily relational nature of local personhood whereby Acholi and evangelical persons and relations are similarly structured; and thirdly, an argument that, in South Sudan, both systems are ultimately about how people organise the moral fabric of their society. -

Shattering Fragility: Illness, Suicide, and Refusal in Fin-De-Siècle Viennese Literature Abstract How fragile is the femme fragile and what does it mean to shatter her fragility? Can there be resistance or even strength in fragility, which would make it, in turn, capable of shattering? I propose that the fragility embodied by young women in fin-de-siècle Vienna harbored an intentionality that signaled refusal. A confluence of factors, including psychoanalysis and hysteria, created spaces for the fragile to find a voice. These bourgeois women occupied a liminal zone between increased access to opportunities, both educational and political, and traditional gender expectations in the home. Although in the late nineteenth century the femme fragile arose as a literary and artistic type who embodied a wan, ethereal beauty marked by delicacy and a passivity that made her more object than authoritative subject, there were signs that illness and suicide could be effectively employed to reject societal mores. -

SYMPOSIUM: THE CENSORSHIP OF LITERARY NATURALISM The of Censorship Literary Naturalism, 1885-1895: Prussia and Saxony GARY D. STARK has been written in recent years about the emergence of modernist culture in^w de siecle Europe and the resistance MUCH it met from cultural traditionalists. The earliest clashes be? tween traditionalism and modernism usually occurred in the legal arena, where police censors sought to uphold traditional norms against the modernist onslaught. How successful was the state in combatting emer? gent modernist cultural movements? Arno Mayer, in a recent analysis ofthe persistence ofthe old regime in Europe before 1914, maintains that: "In the long run, the victory of the modernists may have been inevitable. In the short run, however, the modernists were effectively bridled and isolated, if need be with legal and administrative controls."1 In Germany, the first stirrings of modern literature?if perhaps not yet of full modernism?began with the naturalists, also called the "real- ists," the "youngest Germans," or simply "the Moderns."2 Naturalists Research for this essay was made possible by generous grants from the National En? dowment for the Humanities, the German Academic Exchange Service, and the Uni? versity of Texas at Arlington Organized Research Fund. -
