Megapodes: an action plan for their conservation 1995 - 1999, a collaborative effort of members of the Megapode Specialist Group and the World Pheasant Association, was published in 1995. It summa- rizes the conservation status of all megapode taxa and indicates the needs of those species under threat. The Action Plan was intended to be a stimulus for conservation orientated studies and to gen- erate funds more easily. An overview is given of studies (1990 - present) in which these threatened taxa were involved. The status of these and other taxa are reassessed according to the finalized IUCN threat categories (which supercede the Mace-Lande threat categories originally used in the Action Plan) as a preparation for the megapode action plan 2000 - 2004. Introduction Megapodes: an action plan for their conservation 1995 - 1999 (Dekker & McGowan, 1995) was published by the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 1995 following a Conservation Assessment Management Plan (CAMP) meeting on galliforms held in Antwerp, Bel- gium, in February 1993. The megapode action plan, soon followed by action plans for partridges, quails, francolins, snowcocks and guineafowl (McGowan et al., 1995) and pheasants (McGowan & Garson, 1995), was the first avian action plan published by the IUCN in their series of conservation action plans. -
Additional Records of Passerine Terrestrial Gaits
ADDITIONAL RECORDS OF PASSERINE TERRESTRIAL GAITS GEORGE A. CLARK, JR. The varied methods of locomotion in birds pose significant problems in behavior, ecology, adaptation, and evolution. On the ground birds progress with their legs moving either synchronously (hopping) or asynchronously (walking, running) as the extreme conditions. Relatively terrestrial species often have asynchronous gaits, whereas primarily arboreal species are typically synchronous on the ground. Particularly important earlier studies on passerines are Kunkels’ (1962) comparative behavioral survey and Riiggebergs’ (1960) analysis of the morphological correlates of gaits. Over several years I have noted gaits for 47 passerine species in the U.S., En- gland, and Kenya, and have examined many references. I here sum- marize behavioral records for families not mentioned by Kunkel (1962) and also for species with gaits markedly unlike those of confamilial species discussed by him. My supplementary review is selective rather than ex- haustive with the aim of indicating more fully the distribution of gaits among the passerine families. Regional handbooks, life history studies, and other publications contain numerous additional records, but I know of none that negate the conclusions presented here. J. S. Greenlaw (in prep.) has reviewed elsewhere the passerine double-scratch foraging be- havior that has at times previously been discussed in connection with gaits (e.g., in Hailman 1973). VARIATION WITHIN SPECIES Gaits often vary within a species (Kunkel 1962, Hailman 1973, Schwartz 1964, Gobeil 1968, Eliot in Bent 1968:669-670, this study). As an addi- tional example, I have seen Common Grackles (Quisc&s quiscula) hop in contrast to their usual walk. -

Despite the recognized value of biological collections for the rigorous study of biodiversity, there is scarce information on the monetary costs of specimens. We present results for three expeditions conducted in Santander (municipalities of Cimitarra, El Carmen de Chucurí, and Santa Barbara), Colombia, during 2018 to collect bird voucher specimens, quantifying the costs of obtaining such material. After a sampling effort of 1290 mist net hours and occasional collection using an airgun, we collected 300 bird voucher specimens, representing 117 species from 30 families. -

Traits involved in sexual signaling are ubiquitous among animals. Although a single trait appears sufficient to convey information, many sexually dimorphic species exhibit multiple sexual signals, which may be costly to signalers and receivers. Given that one signal may be enough, there are many microevolutionary hypotheses to explain the evolution of multiple signals. Here we extend these hypotheses to a macroevolutionary scale and compare those predictions to the patterns of gains and losses of sexual dimorphism in pheasants and partridges. Among nine dimorphic characters, including six intersexual signals and three indicators of competitive ability, all exhibited both gains and losses of dimorphism within the group. Although theories of intersexual selection emphasize gain and elaboration, those six characters exhibited greater rates of loss than gain; in contrast, the competitive traits showed a slight bias towards gains. The available models, when examined in a macroevolutionary framework, did not yield unique predictions, making it difficult to distinguish among them. -

These systematic uncertainties can be categorized by two main sources: an imperfect understanding of the linearity correction for the MEO's Watec 902H2 Ultimate video cameras and uncertainties in meteor magnitudes aris- ing from transformations between the Watec camera's Sony EX-View HAD bandpass and the bandpasses used to determine reference star magnitudes. To address the first point, we have measured the linearity response of the MEO's standard meteor video cameras using two independent laboratory tests on eight cameras. Our empirically determined linearity correction is critical for performing accurate photometry at low camera intensity levels. With regards to the second point, we have calculated synthetic magnitudes in the EX bandpass for reference stars. These synthetic magnitudes enable direct calculations of the meteor's photometric flux within the camera band- Preprint submitted to Planetary and Space Science August 22, 2016 pass without requiring any assumptions of its spectral energy distribution. Systematic uncertainties in the synthetic magnitudes of individual reference stars are estimated at ∼ 0:20 mag, and are limited by the available spec- tral information in the reference catalogs. -

The Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata) is the first species of passerine bird with a complete genome sequence, making it an exciting time for avian evolutionary biology. Native to Australia and the Lesser Sunda Islands, this species has long played an important role in the study of ecology, behaviour and neuroscience. With the sequencing of its genome, the Zebra Finch now also represents an important model system for evolutionary and population genomics. The production of a genome sequence for the Zebra Finch will have far-reaching impacts on the study of avian biology. Here we discuss the genomic resources available for the Zebra Finch, including the genome sequence itself, and some of the ways in which they will facilitate the study of avian diversity. We also highlight recent examples from the literature that have already begun to leverage Zebra Finch genomic tools towards the study of birds in nature. This is one of the largest species of motmot (Skutch, 1983), with a conspicuous blue racquet tail and grey legs (Fig. 1). Formerly considered a subspecies of the blue-crowned motmot M. momotus, it is now a separate species M. bahamensis endemic to (only found in) Trinidad and Tobago. Total length males 46 cm, females also 46 cm (Schulenberg & Thomas, 2010). Short grey legs, its body tilted obliquely forward and its well developed tail extended back vertically (Styles & Skutch, 1989); males mean wing length 135 mm, females 138 mm (Schulenberg & Thomas 2010); 4-toed feet with a single toe facing the rear and the inner toe joined to the middle toe (Graham, 2012); mask-like head one-third in proportion to body and pointed bill (Schulenburg & Thomas 2010); saw-edged or serrated bill, used in crushing and cutting; well developed tactile bristles, two tail feathers that are central and much longer than the others (Graham, 2012).
