ABSTRACT A theatrical portrait is an image of an actor or actors in character. This genre was widespread in eighteenth century London and was practised by a large number of painters and engravers of all levels of ability. The sources of the genre lay in a number of diverse styles of art, including the court portraits of Lely and Kneller and the fetes galantes of Watteau and Mercier. Three types of media for theatrical portraits were particularly prevalent in London, between ca745 and 1800 : painting, print and book illustration.

Samuel H. Kress Collection 1946.7.9 ENTRY Numerous paintings with figures in theatrical costume attest to Jean Antoine Watteau’s interest in the theater. In The Italian Comedians, however—as in others of his works in this genre—the identity of some of the characters remains uncertain or equivocal because he sometimes reused the same model for different figures and modified standard costumes according to his whim. Pierre Rosenberg has drawn attention to the announcement in the Mercure de France of the 1733 print after The Italian Comedians [fig. 1] by Bernard Baron (1696–1762): “These are almost all portraits of men skilled in their art, whom Watteau painted in the different clothing of the actors of the Italian Theatre.” [1] It would seem, then, that the painting does not record an actual performance; and we lack evidence as to who these individuals might actually be. It was Baron’s print (included in the Recueil Jullienne, the compendium of prints after Watteau’s work) that gave The Italian Comedians its title. The scene appears to represent a curtain call of the Comédie Italienne, the French version of the commedia dell’arte, which presented stock characters in predictably humorous plots. A red curtain has been drawn aside from a stage where fifteen figures stand together.

  • LADIES-IN-WAITING: Art, Sex and Politics at the Early Georgian Court
LADIES-IN-WAITING: Art, Sex and Politics at the early Georgian Court By Eric Jonathan Weichel A thesis submitted to the Department of Art in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (April 2013) Copyright © Eric Jonathan Weichel, 2013. i Abstract This thesis discusses the cultural contributions – artistic patronage, art theory, art satire - of four Ladies-in-Waiting employed at the early eighteenth-century century British court: Mary, Countess Cowper; Charlotte Clayton, Baroness Sundon; Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk; and Mary Hervey, Baroness Hervey of Ickworth. Through a close reading of archival manuscripts, published correspondences and art historical treatises, I explore the cultural milieu, historical legacy and historiographic reception of these individuals. I argue that their writing reveals fresh insight on the switch from Baroque to Rococo modes of portraiture in Britain, as it does critical attitudes to sex, religion and politics among aristocratic women. Through the use of satire, these courtiers comment on extramarital affairs, rape, homosexuality and divorce among their peer group. They also show an interest in issues of feminist education, literature, political and religious patronage, and contemporary news events, which they reference through allusions to painting, architecture, sculpture, engravings, ceramics, textiles and book illustrations. Many of the artists patronized by the court in this period were foreign-born, peripatetic, and stylistically unusual. Partly due to the transnational nature of these artist’s careers, and partly due to the reluctance of later historians to admit the extent of foreign socio-cultural influence, biased judgements about the quality of these émigré painters’ work continue to predominate in art historical scholarship.

  • John Collet (Ca
JOHN COLLET (CA. 1725-1780) A COMMERCIAL COMIC ARTIST TWO VOLUMES VOLUME I CAITLIN BLACKWELL PhD University of York Department of History of Art December 2013 ii ABSTRACT This thesis focuses on the comic work of the English painter John Collet (ca. 1725- 1780), who flourished between 1760 and 1780, producing mostly mild social satires and humorous genre subjects. In his own lifetime, Collet was a celebrated painter, who was frequently described as the ‘second Hogarth.’ His works were known to a wide audience; he regularly participated in London’s public exhibitions, and more than eighty comic prints were made after his oil paintings and watercolour designs. Despite his popularity and prolific output, however, Collet has been largely neglected by modern scholars. When he is acknowledged, it is generally in the context of broader studies on graphic satire, consequently confusing his true profession as a painter and eliding his contribution to London’s nascent exhibition culture. This study aims to rescue Collet from obscurity through in-depth analysis of his mostly unfamiliar works, while also offering some explanation for his exclusion from the British art historical canon. His work will be located within both the arena of public exhibitions and the print market, and thus, for the first time, equal attention will be paid to the extant paintings, as well as the reproductive prints. The thesis will be organised into a succession of close readings of Collet’s work, with each chapter focusing on a few representative examples of a significant strand of imagery. These images will be examined from art-historical and socio-historical perspectives, thereby demonstrating the artist’s engagement with both established pictorial traditions, and ephemeral and topical social preoccupations.

Watteau and His Circle watteauandhiscircle.org Defining the Oeuvre of Bonaventure de Bar (Part 1) © Martin Eidelberg Created June 21, 2011 Around 1930, the French writer and critic Robert Rey created the phrase “satellites of Watteau” to characterize the early eighteenth-century followers of Watteau.1 He did not consider the two best known of the painter’s disciples—Jean Baptiste Pater and Nicolas Lancret!but focused instead on some of the more obscure followers including Philippe Mercier, François Octavien, Jérôme François Chantereau, and the subject of the present study, Bonaventure de Bar.2 Despite the eighty years that have since passed, much about the artistic identities of these Watteau satellites remains unresolved. In the case of Bonaventure de Bar (1700-29), the artist has been the subject of several, not necessarily useful studies. One of the first and most serious was Antony Valabrègue’s essay written in the first years of the twentieth century.3 In addition to the artist’s morceau de réception in the Louvre, he gathered together another extant painting that he thought was by de Bar, three references to de Bar paintings in eighteenth-century auctions, and a handful of extant drawings. A quarter of a century later, Georges Huard offered only a very short biography of the artist, and credited him with only one extant painting!the one in the Louvre—and listed very few sale references and drawings.4 While Rey’s study was lengthy, and although he listed more paintings and drawings than previously, many prove to be false attributions. Later, several of the drawings and paintings misattributed to de Bar were correctly reassigned to Pierre d’Angellis by Karl T.

CLEAR II Baroque and Rococo Visual Arts Packet by Jeremy Hixson 1. A lifesize peacock dominates one of these objects, which also features a dragonfly sitting on a mushroom and an owl in a cage and which was designed by James Cox. One style of these objects is the "tete de poupee", which are named for their appearance in profile and which were decorated with its creator's namesake Boulle marquetry of inlaid brass or pewter arabesques in a turtleshell veneer. JeanJacques and Philippe Caffieri did the bronze work on one of these objects housed in Versailles and designed by ClaudeSimeon Passemant; that piece is topped by a transparent globus which displays a rotating model of heavenly bodies. A painting of the "Flight into Egypt" by Francesco Trevisani appears on the front of a "nocturnal" example of these objects, which was designed by Pier Tommaso Campani for Pope Alexander VII and which uses a lamp in the back to shine through carved numbers in a rotating dial. For 10 points, identify these timekeeping instruments, often used as decorative objects. ANSWER: Clock [accept "Timepieces" until "time" is said; accept "Automata" before "tete" is said] 2. Barend Oortkras designed the second clock mechanism and Nicolaus Derck poorly cast the second set of 38 bells, including the 7,000 pound Quint Bell, for this cathedral's carillon after the originals were destroyed in a fire in 1756. Harman van Boles designed this cathedral's large gilt spire, which dominates the skyline of the city in which this cathedral is located and which is topped by the figure of an angel holding a cross, which serves as a weathervane.

BETWEEN FRIENDS: REPRESENTATIONS OF FEMALE SOCIABILITY IN FRENCH GENRE PAINTING AND PORTRAITURE, 1770-1830 Molly A. Medakovich A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Art. Chapel Hill 2012 Approved by: Prof. Mary D. Sheriff Prof. Neil McWilliam Prof. Melissa Hyde Prof. Carol Magee Prof. Daniel Sherman © 2012 Molly A. Medakovich ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT MOLLY A. MEDAKOVICH: Between Friends: Representations of Female Sociability in French Genre Painting and Portraiture, 1770-1830 (Under the direction of Dr. Mary D. Sheriff) This dissertation examines spaces of female sociability and their representation in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century genre paintings and portraiture. I look to paintings that feature female companions engaging with one another in various locales – the exotic colonial island, the convent, the boudoir, the salon, and the artist’s studio – and analyze the ways in which artists represent female friendship in such settings. Despite the historical tradition that negated women’s extra-familial relationships and instead privileged the male enjoyment of the offices of friendship, the companionship, intimacy, and collaboration that unfolds within the canvases suggests a dynamic that deserves more attention than has been heretofore been given. Historical and art historical narratives of this period before, during, and after the French Revolution consistently focus on male artistic and social networks, foregrounding them in a language of brotherhood and public virtue, but sisterhood existed in other significant forms. The images I investigate are drawn from the period 1770-1830, an era of genre painting and portraiture that presents a particularly rich set of scenes featuring female sociability, often in the absence of men.

  • Antoine Watteau Inconnu Et Trahi

Kirsten Yvonne Tambling 2 ABSTRACT This thesis asks how seduction is addressed in the work of Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) and William Hogarth (1697-1764), in the context of early eighteenth-century cross-Channel relationships. Literally meaning ‘leading astray’, seduction in the eighteenth century had resonances for sexuality, gender, morality, politics and aesthetics. This thesis uses a broad methodology, drawing on literary and social history, as well as the history of art, to provide an overview of seduction’s parameters, and to address its implications on both sides of the Channel.
