INTRODUCTION I. Aim of the Directory tr The Directory of Popidation Periodicals has been prepared by ESCAP with specialuser categories in mind: government personnel, librarians/ doctunentalists, and research workers, A, teachers and students. Government perscemei: information on periodicals printing informationon population is useful to Governments in determining a systematic population information disseminationpolicy and programme. Countries canassess the present situation by studying the number of periodicals, their characteristics, the subjects covered and the target audiences. Gaps in subjectareas and in audience areas can he identified, and correctivemeasures, can be taken. Comparisons with other countries can also help in the development ofprogrammes of dissemination. Librarians and documentalists: This Directory provides a resource in searching for ,literature or in setting up a programme of systematic acquisition olf 'serials: forexample, what \is in print, what can be ordered and when and how exchange of informationcan be arranged for individual centres and through networks at the national, subregional and regional levels. Research workers, teachers and students: Time-consuming difficulties in findingsources of iliterature,;frequently result in the neglect of less well knownor less easily accessible sources. This causes systematic biases in bibliographies presented in population research publications. The Directory helps to bridge the gap, and will be of directuse to the research worker who seeks sources on data for a specific country or on a specific subject. ESCAP believesthese data will encourage users to examine more literature published iziside and outside their ro own countries for either methodological or comparative purposes. It is noted that there is a growing trend towards publishing documents in national languages in the region. Since the Directory is an English-language publicatiot entries of periodicals published in other languages have been translated into English and incorporated in theDirectory. It is hoped that this will assist users in the location of necessary periodicals, fora part of the continuing function of the secretariat is to help in overcoming barriers to the flow of population information. II. How the Directory was prepared The present Directory is the product of four preparatory phases: A. The purpose of the first phase, initiated in April 1972, was to locate population perio- dicals (with their addresses) in the EltAP region. Several sources were utilized: (1) Direttory of Key Personnel and Periodicals in the Field of population in the ECAFE Region by ECAFE (E/CN.11/ 898, 1970); (2) Research, Teaching .and Training in Demography- A Directgry of Institutions in .the ECAFE Region by ECAFE (E/C11/1007), Asian PopulationStudies sSeries No. 8; (3) Available periodicals in the Population Division; (4) Bibliographies prepared by, or available to, the Population Division. cm a The questionnaire u ed was a' compromise between three considerations: collecting infor -' mation which would be practical use to the target 'categories of users (government personnel, librarians/ documentalists, research workers, teachers and students); collecting information Which would enable basic analysis oil specific information problems to be carried out;' and keepingthequestionna. ire sufficiently 'short and simple to avoid jeopardizing the chance of - response. ESCAP is grateful to the many persons inside and outside the 'Secretariatwho provided guidance on thepiapration of the questionnaire. the definition of the words used yeas carefully checked in different languagqs to insure suitability and consensus. B. The second phase consisted of compiling the names of periodicals which answered the questionnaire by country and then sending each listing to the ESCAP population correspondents in their respective countries asking for suggestions of napes of unlisted periodicalswhich should be included. This survey enlarged the present Directory by nearly 100 periodicals and provided another example of the valueof the cor- respondents to the Commission in particular and the region as a whole. C. The thirphase was the compiltion of the Directory itself: presentation of the data and its enhancement with the available International Standard Serial Number(ISSN) (Key 4 of the user% guide describes the value of-the ISSN), and the preparation of indexes. D. The fourth phase, preparation of the mailing list for distribution ofthe Directory in orderto (reach carefullyselected target audiences, particularly in the ESCAP region, is important if the data are to be properly dissemied and utilized. This fourth phase in the "'first stage ends when the reader-user has this docent in hand. III. Further necessary steps 0 It is necessary to improve or expand the Directory since the Division% surveysshow that the situation evolves constantly: new periodicals appear, others cease publication ormodify their characteristics (changing emphasis on subject area or priority, or adding abstracts in foreign languages, etc.). Readers will note that publicAtions in quite a few countries in the regiondo not appear in ttie present issue. Their omission does not mean thereis no serial publication in the field of population in those countries, and efforts are being made byESCAP toestablish communication channels so that new information can be collected and presented inthe futdce issues. Suggestions are welcome. They should be sent to theaddress given-on

  • Towards an Inclusive Public Transport System in Pakistan1
TOWARDS AN INCLUSIVE PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN PAKISTAN1 Muhammad Adeel, Anthony G.O Yeh and Zhang Feng2 Abstract Urban transport in Pakistan is characterized by the coexistence of formal and informal transit services. While urban transport is deregulated and - somehow – multimodal in the country, the transport service providers often compete with each other within their particular constrains and their equilibrium defines the overall landscape of urban accessibility. With examples from the cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the paper discusses three broad constraints on the urban modes of transportation, namely regulatory, spatial and demand related constraints, using a number of important system characteristics. Results show that the overall level of constraints remains ‘Very High’ on the newly constructed BRT, followed by ‘High’ constraints on the informal paratransit mode, ‘Qinqui’. Whereas the Suzuki and Wagon modes coverage remains maximum and they carry relatively lower level of constraints. In this context, an inclusive urban mobility largely depends on a proactive approach by management authorities to minimize these constraints through a number of initiatives including integration of modes, improvements of the quality of service and condition of vehicle, and by facilitating the mobility of women and non-motorized travellers. Keywords: Transport, accessibility, Pakistan, BRT, Qingqi 1. BACKGROUND Population explosion and rapid urbanization in Asian countries have brought complex mobility challenges for a vast majority of their people who also face issues of poverty, inequality and limited access to basic services (Gakenheimer, 1999). While the average distances between activities are increasing with time, so are the issues of mobility and accessibility. Lack of access to public transport, poor quality of transportation infrastructure, rising levels of personal automobile ownership and a persistent disregard of traffic regulations pose further issues to the already challenging mobility environment (Dimitriou and Gakenheimer, 2011).

According to the information received, on 9 June 2004, Khairan was killed by her husband, Ghulam Hussain, at their home in Shahul Sadhayo Village, near Humayoon Town, Shikarpur District, Sindh Province. According to Mohammad, at around 4:30 p.m., they heard the sound of gunshots coming from inside the house; they ran in and saw Ghulam Hussain brandishing a rifle, firing directly at Khairan. Mohammad urged Hussain to stop, but he turned and pointed the rifle at Mohammad and his two relatives, threatening them not to get involved.
