download comedy albums SPIN’s 40 Greatest Comedy Albums of All Time. Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Patton Oswalt and 37 other records funnier than 'Lulu' Comedy albums have come a long way since Thomas Edison etched the first recorded dick joke to wax cylinder (“Hey, want to see the wizard’s staff of Menlo Park?”). In the 1960s, comedy albums were totemic, regularly beating out Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett for Album of the Year Grammys. In the 1970s, guys like Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx inspired the flows of hundreds of rappers who rifled through their parents’ record collections. In the 1980s, the business was bustling enough to provide Emo Phillips with a major-label deal. With the recent rise of comedic podcasts like WTF with Marc Maron , The Ricky Gervais Show , and The Glenn Beck Podcast , people are listening to funny stuff more than they have in forever. In honor of our November 2011 “Funny” Issue, we assembled a crack team of comedy nerds to compile an authoritative, definitive list of the 40 best comedy albums of all time. Here’s 40 artists who deserve to sell more units than Jeff Foxworthy. 40. Andrew “Dice” Clay. The Day The Laughter Died (1990) The free-associative filth masquerading as jokes on the Diceman’s two-disc debut is one step below bathroom graffiti. But the unique production, mostly perpetrated by master “reducer” Rick Rubin, makes this an immortal document of raw humanity: small club, small crowd, unsuspecting victims, the day-after-Christmas malaise. Swinging from “juvenile” to “politically incorrect” to “unrepentantly sexist and racist,” Dice performs a 102-minute tightrope act where his porno talk falls flat, he’s forced to shout down requests for famous bits, and he causes heckling tourists to flee the room in disgust.

SOCIETY OF AMERICANISTS REVIEW Stand-Up Comedy, Social Critique and a Few Notes on Retelling the Origins of American Studies Michelle Robinson, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, NC, USA Abstract: This essay considers a range of ways scholars refl ect on the origins and institutionalization of the fi eld of American studies in the post-World War II era. Drawing on examples from the comedy of Mort Sahl, Jackie “Moms” Mabley, and Richard Pryor, this essay argues that post-war stand-up comedy sup- plies an aesthetics and an ethics that can open up new and pro- ductive ways of engaging critically with the origins of the fi eld 52 STAND UP COMEDY, SOCIAL CRITIQUES Well before I was born, my great grandmother threw herself in front of a bus. The police tried to say she was committing suicide. But the family knew she was just trying to stop civil rights. - Anthony Jeselnik, Caligula (2013) On his 2013 album Caligula, Anthony Jeselnik con- fesses that a dreadful death in the family was no pedestrian suicide but an act of white supremacist terror. The comedian summons a relative only to throw her in the path of a moving vehicle--and into a bit of rhetorical slapstick. In fact, he invents an enemy of civil rights whose desperate need to seize control of the front of a bus leads to a death so bizarre the police can’t fathom it as political protest. What sort of joke is this? An instance of affectionate familial misogyny and one that offers us, also, the delight of imagining justice-dealt-by-public transit for an ancestor’s idiotic, self-sabotaging crusade against integration.

  • Comedian Lewis Black Brings His Joke's on US Comedy Tour To
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Comedian Lewis Black Brings His Joke’s On US Comedy Tour to Worcester on December 8 Worcester, Mass. (April 29, 2019) Lewis Black, the Grammy® Award-winning stand- up comedian, actor and author returns to The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts with his new show, The Joke’s On US Tour, on Sunday, December 8 at 7 pm. Tickets are now on sale to members and go on sale to the public on Friday, May 3 at 10 am. Black’s live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is a more angry optimist than a mean- spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world. Black came into national prominence with his appearances on “The Daily Show” in 1996. Those appearances on “The Daily Show” led to comedy specials on HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime and Epix. In 2001, he won Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has released eight comedy albums, including the 2007 Grammy® Award-winning “The Carnegie Hall Performance.” He won his second Grammy® Award for his album “Stark Raving Black” and has published three bestselling books: “Nothing’s Sacred” (Simon & Schuster, 2005), “Me of Little Faith” (Riverhead Books, 2008) and “I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas” (Riverhead Books, 2010). In 2012, he performed eight sell-out shows at Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway, as well as did one of his two HBO Specials, “Black on Broadway.” In 2015, Black notably --more-- voiced the character “Anger” in the Academy® Award winning film from Pixar, “Inside Out.” Additionally, Black does a live streaming show called “The Rant is Due” at the end of each of his standup performances.
