A high-school girl named Makoto acquires the power to travel back in time, and decides to use it for her own personal benefits. Little does she know that she is affecting the lives of others just as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time as she is her own. Rarely do I buy a film on DVD without having either read up about it or seen it first. For a dull anecdote, I walked through the store, saw it, and bought it, without knowing anything other than what was written on the back. When i got home, I didn't even start to watch it! But waited until after dinner to watch it, and to cut the already long story short, watching this movie was an experience! From the very first scenes I was grabbed. The artwork, I must say I adore, the scenery is beautiful. As for the storyline, sure, we've had time-travelling stories before, but there's never been one which after seeing it, made me want to watch it again Seriously, as soon as it was over, I watched it again! Cutting the even-longer story short again, I highly recommend this film, even those who are not lovers of anime might find themselves enjoying this film. Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) - Released by The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Herald Picturesthe film is a loose sequel to the novel of the same name by Yasutaka Tsutsui and shares the basic premise of a young girl who gains the power of time travel and repeatedly relives the same day in a time loopbut with a different story and characters than the novel. Riisa Naka voices teenager Makoto Konno, who learns from Kazuko Yoshiyama, Makoto's aunt and the protagonist to the original story, that Makoto has the power to travel through time. Makoto begins using the time-leaps frivolously to fix problems. The English version was licensed and produced by Kadokawa Pictures U. At Kuranose High School in TokyoJapan, 17 year old Makoto Konno discovers a message written on a blackboard and ends up inadvertently falling upon a walnut-shaped object. On her way home, she is ejected into a railroad crossing when the brakes on her bicycle fail and is hit by an oncoming train, but finds herself transported back to the point in time when she was riding her bicycle right before the accident. After entering the Tokyo National Museum to meet with Kazuko Yoshiyama, she explains to Makoto after hearing her story that clearly, she now has the power to "time-leap", to literally leap through The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. At first, Makoto uses her powers to avoid being late, getting perfect grades, and even relive a single karaoke session for several hours, but soon discovers her actions can adversely affect others. Consequently, Makoto uses most of her leaps frivolously, to prevent undesirable situations from happening, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time an awkward love confession from her best friend Chiaki Mamiya. Makoto realizes that she has a numbered tattoo on her arm indicating the limited number of times she can time leap. Using her remaining time leaps, Makoto attempts to make things right for everyone. When Chiaki calls Makoto to ask if she has been time-leaping, she uses The Girl Who Leapt Through Time final time leap to prevent Chiaki's call. Makoto attempts to stop them, but because she had just used her final leap, she is unable to rescue them from the train. A moment later, Chiaki freezes time, telling Makoto that he is from the future. He explains that the walnut-shaped object is a time-traveling The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and he used it to leap through time hoping to see a painting that is being restored by Kazuko, as it has been destroyed in the future.

The first part of the thesis is developed from a focus on the director's life and background: Nitsu Makoto, aka Makoto Shinkai, was born in the city of Koumi (Nagano Prefecture) on February 9th, class 1973. After the graduation in literature at Tokyo Chuo University he was employed in a videogame company called Falcom, where he spent five years. Certainly, the different background and schooling he had undertaken, played a very important role in shaping this artist's style. Although often it has been hard deal with such a different work, mainly for his little technical experience, the success of his masterpieces spread soon all around the world. The increasingly complex and sophisticated work, the aesthetic style and the development of unique plots, the shaping of interesting characters: everything is match every time with a careful, almost maniacal, research of the best soundtrack, the most communicative dialogues full of poetic contents and literary references. Title: The "characterization" of Japan : from merchandising to identity Issue Date: 2017-03-21 Chapter 2 Character Consumers and Consumption In his pioneering book Material Culture and Mass Consumption , anthropologist Daniel Miller looks at the relationship between people and things and argues that “the human subject cannot be considered outside the material world within which, and through which, it is constructed” (1987: 86). He suggests to investigate things in the specific contexts, since the diversity of commodities, the various origins of their production, the multiple interests invested in them during their different stages (such as design and promotion) and the distinctive social-cultural contexts of their use and consumption have made a complex material culture (Lee, 2000: 11). “What underlies this complexity is less an appeal for pluralism than a recognition of a pluralism which already confronts us,” continues Miller (1987: 175). He focuses on mass consumption and notes that the materiality of commodities matters. His argument is particularly relevant for character consumption. As I explained in Chapter 1, characters are commodified through the practice of character merchandising, by which the rights to characters are licensed to various producers and transformed into a great variety of character goods. In this sense, character merchandising may function as an effective mechanism that continually provides new forms and materials for consumption, which already displays a certain degree of familiarity. Since the 1970s characters have become an important feature of mainstream consumption, functioning as a social- cultural tie between private and public, connecting old and young, men and women, consumers with different interests and preferences.
