Sports teams, children at the playgrounds, dog walkers and recreation seekers of all kinds find their way to these facilities. While many people pitch in to keep the fields well maintained, time and normal wear and tear are taking their toll. Last summer Councilman Dowd helped to convene city officials, members of MACC and our youth sports teams to start to identify potential field improvements and determine which city departments would be able to assist. As the group began to rattle off item after item, it became clear that the project might be a bit bigger than first anticipated. Using information leaders expressed during this first meeting, MACC submitted a proposal to the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh’s Design Fund. The Design Fund assists communities by providing financial support that enables organizations to retain a professional design firm to assist with community planning, visioning and development of design drawings for a specific project. CDCP selected MACC through their competitive application process to receive a $7000 Design Fund Grant this past December. Members of MACC and the youth athletic team leaders developed and distributed a request for proposal to leading design firms from southwestern Pennsylvania. Firms responded by outlining their approach to improving the two fields. In March, the working committee selected Pashek and Associates – a Pittsburgh-based planning and design firm to lead the project. Pashek and Associates has valuable experience in athletic facility design and a great familiarity with Morningside. To learn more about the firm and see examples of their work please check them out at www.pashekla.com. The event is held in honor of those who courageously serve our country and communities. Each year, the Morningside Mile will recognize one individual from the Morningside area who has served our country and/or its citizens admirably. That individual or his/her next of kin will have the privilege of choosing the race charity for the same year. This Year’s Honoree is Sergeant Damian Duggan Damian and his family moved to Morningside in 1993 when he was nine years old, and he soon began attending St. Raphael’s Elementary School. Damian resided in Morningside until he enlisted in the United States Army in 2008. Since completing basic training, Damian’s service has taken him all over the world, including to his recent deployment in Afghanistan. Although Damian’s base is in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he maintains close ties to many of his Morningside friends and his sister Shannon, who nominated him for this honor. The Morningside Mile recognizes the incredible bravery and selflessness that Damian displayed by volunteering for the Army during a period when American troops faced dangerous conditions in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, and for the work he does everyday to keep innocent men, women and children safe, whether he’s on a tour of duty overseas or back in the United States acquiring new skills and knowledge for his next assignment. We appreciate the sacrifices that Sgt Duggan and his family have made so that others can be free and are proud to have him as the 2012 Morningside Mile honoree. Damian has chosen the Wounded Warrior Project to be this year’s primary race Sergeant Damian Duggan beneficiary. The Wounded Warrior Project is a national non-profit organization that 2012 Morningside Mile Honoree organizes awareness, programs and aid to uplift injured service men and women. Seventy percent (70%) of the race proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project and 30% will stay in the community and be managed by the Morningside Area Community Council. Please join us for the 2nd annual Morningside Mile on Saturday, September 8, 2012 to show our appreciation to Sgt. Duggan and all of the Morningside residents past and present who serve our neighborhood, our city, and our country. Category Description Early Bird Fee Registration Fee Late Reg. Neighbor Zinat Naderi brought this private social network to our attention at the April MACC meeting, and a number of Morningside residents have already signed up. The network will be most successful if we get a lot of participation in the neighborhood. So what is it exactly? Nextdoor Morningside is a private social network just for residents of Morningside. Neighbors can use Nextdoor to find a babysitter, get the word out about a break-in, organize a yard sale or ask for help finding a lost pet. You can choose how much information about yourself that you share, so choose the right level of privacy to suit you.
