News A publication of MACC Morningside Area Community Council Fall 2011

The Morningside Mile is a one-mile run/walk to promote fitness and build community through physical activity. The event will be held in honor of those who courageously serve our country and communities. September 10, 2011 at 8:30 am - (More information on page 2 or visit morningside-pa.org/race)

Dear Neighbors, The Morningside Mile promises to be a unique event. Part community celebration, part fundraiser and part physical challenge, all in one day. Normally, these activities are separate, but by linking them together we hope to create a simple, yet effective way of celebrating and displaying our neighborhood to both residents and visiting participants in the race. The idea originated at MACC’s annual strategic planning retreat this January and has taken shape over the last few months. The purpose of the event is to recognize the men and women in uniform who serve our country each day through our armed services and as members of our public safety forces and to memorialize the tragedies of Sept 11th, 2001. The physical challenge consists of a one-mile run stretching from the Morningside business district to Heth’s Field. Why just one mile? Many neighborhoods host 5Ks or longer distances, so in order to carve out a niche we are crafting a one-mile run. Second, “the mile” is a standard measure of an athlete’s fitness and speed. So why not test yourself on the streets of Morningside? Plus, a one-mile run is short enough for walkers, families and recreation runners to enjoy themselves and to complete in a reasonable time. The fundraiser component of the Mile is designed to benefit a great cause, The Wounded Warrior Project. Working with our partners and neighbors at the Morningside VFW, we’ve identified a charity that recognizes the sacrifices of the men and women who serve our country. Proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and a small portion will go towards administrative costs incurred by MACC. Community celebrations are nothing new to Morningside, but we hope to share our community spirit with others on September 10th by welcoming them to come and compete and join in the fun. The race will culminate in Heth’s Field where family activities, food, games and music will be available. Like all Morningside celebrations it promises to be a good time for all members of the family. So, please mark September 10th on your calendars. Get your running shoes ready. Or, if running isn’t your thing, please let us know if you are interested in volunteering. We can always use an extra set of hands. In any case, the Morningside Mile will be worth your while. Special Tribute: Each year the race will honor one individual from the Morningside area who has served our country and/or its citizens unselfishly in the face of crisis. This year, tribute will be given posthumously to Marine Gunnery Sergeant Justin Schmalstieg. He was killed in December 2010 by a roadside bomb in the Helmand Province in Afghanistan. Schmalstieg, 28, was a Stanton Heights native, a 2000 graduate of Peabody High School and the son of Pittsburgh police officers. Community Celebration: At the conclusion of the Morningside Mile, celebrate and honor those who serve in Heth’s Field. Current plans include a DJ, Bounce Castle and games for the kids. Come out, cheer on the runners and then join in on the fun. Watch the website for updates. If you are interested in helping with the plans, please contact Nan Pischke at [email protected] or 412-638-0963.

During the week of July 4th, youth volunteers attending the Mennonite Church USA Convention in Pittsburgh volunteered their time by cleaning up in Morningside. They were among nearly 2,900 teens and young adults at the convention who are donating 10,000 hours of labor to 47 local organizations and agencies. The teens who volunteered in Morningside moved three tons of debris and heavy waste from the Heth’s Run Watershed area. The Heth’s Run “adventure” was led by Allegheny CleanWays and its Dumpbusters crew of local volunteers who devote two to three days a week cleaning dumpsites in Allegheny County. The cleanup of Heth’s Run is a prelude to the massive, multimillion dollar Heth’s Run Ecological and Recreation Restoration Project, for which plans started in 2002. It includes a bridge restoration, a Councilman Patrick Dowd greets the volunteers organized by Allegheny trail system, access to the Allegheny River and a greening of what Cleanways and its Dumpbusters crew prior to the cleanup is now the parking lot of the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. That lot will be relocated. Heth’s Run, named for Henry Heth, who captained a Virginia regiment in service at Fort Pitt during the Revolutionary War and built an estate nearby, lies between Highland Park and Morningside. It was a stream before it was covered over with a culvert more than a century ago. It runs to the Allegheny River largely under the zoo’s parking lot. MACC would like to thank Allegheny CleanWays, Dumpbusters and Councilman Patrick Dowd’s office for identifying the Heth’s Run cleanup as a service project for the Mennonite Conference volunteers, and for coordinating the effort. (Information from Pittsburgh Post Gazette article written by Diana Nelson Jones) Some of the debris collected by the volunteers. SPORTS TEAMS SPRUCE UP COMMUNITY PARKS The Morningside Beautification Committee would like to recognize the efforts of our neighborhood sports teams to help make our parks nicer for everyone. The Morningside girls’ softball team painted the Heth’s Field concession stand and bleachers. The Morningside boys’ baseball team painted the Natoli Field concession stand and storage box. Special thanks to both groups for volunteering their time not only to the children, but to the community. When visiting the parks, be a good neighbor and remember a few simple guidelines: please watch your language, pick up litter (even if it’s not your litter) and teach your children the importance of More than 40 tires were retrieved from the Heth’s Run watershed area in valuing the playgrounds. PO Box 40313 Pittsburgh, PA 15201 www.macconline.org Page 4 St. Raphael church CELEBRATES 100 YEARS

St. Raphael Church in Morningside will celebrate 100 years this September. In 1911, the Diocese of Pittsburgh granted approval for residents of the neighborhood to form a parish. Construction on the church began in September of 1911, and while the church was being built, the congregation met in a house at 901 Highview St. Just four months later, the first mass was celebrated on Christmas Eve. The current building (pictured at left) was built in 1958 when the congregation outgrew that first building. Today, St. Raphael Church counts 1,450 families in its congregation, which translates into approximately 3,500 registered members. Approximately 750 to 800 people attend mass each week. A few years after the founding of St. Raphael Church, St. Raphael Parish School opened, and the school continues to educate children from preschool through 8th grade. School begins this year on August 29. To celebrate the 100th anniversary, St. Raphael Church is offering three days of activities. First, on Sept. 23, St. Raphael School will hold an open house from 6-8 pm, followed by a reception at the Morningside Veterans of Foreign Wars post, 1800 Morningside Ave. On Sept. 24, the church will host a banquet at Churchill Valley Country Club on Beulah Road, with drinks at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. On September 25, Bishop David A. Zubik will officiate at a jubilee mass at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at the parish. MACC congratulates St. Raphael Church as it celebrates 100 years!

Morningside_newsletter07-28.indd 1 7/29/2011 1:59:45 PM FROM THE OFFICE OF MAYOR LUKE RAVENSTAHL

Dear Neighbors, As August rolls around, many children and families will begin thinking about the upcoming school year. This summer, I’m asking you to give some thought to how you can help support Pittsburgh youth. I believe that Pittsburgh’s future is in the hands of its young people. That’s why I’ve committed to serving as a middle-school mentor during the 2011-12 school year - and I want you to join me. There are lots of great ways to get involved. One opportunity is through the Be-A-6th-Grade-Mentor Program– the largest mentoring project in the region’s history. Simply by sharing your time, you can make a tremendous difference. In a recent study of mentoring relationships, youth with mentors were shown to: • Get better grades • Be less likely to get involved with drugs • Be 86% more likely to go to college Along with serving as a mentor myself, I recently established the Mayor’s Mentoring Initiative to help grow youth mentoring efforts in our City. The Mayor’s Mentoring Initiative provides City employees with the opportunity to serve as middle-school mentors in partnership with the Be A 6th Grade Mentor Program. It is my hope that other businesses and corporations will follow my lead and make mentoring opportunities available to their employees as well. For more information about the Be-A-6th-Grade-Mentor project, please call 412-456-6770 or check out bea6thgradementor.org. To learn about the Mayor’s Mentoring Initiative, please call 412- 255-4765 or check out mentor.pittsburghpa.gov. You can find additional mentoring opportunities at www.mentoringpittsburgh.org. The Be-A-6th-Grade-Mentor Program was initiated by the leadership of the Youth Futures Commission and developed through the collaboration of United Way of Allegheny County, Pittsburgh Public Schools, and the Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
