Worship led by Randy Gill. See page 8 for more information. From the President Not long before I became president a man named Robert Donovan came to my office unannounced and told me that he and his wife were the artists who created the Stauffer Chapel stained-glass masterpiece. He and Bette had returned to campus in the twilight years of their lives together to sign their work and to be remembered. He told me of the process of fitting more than 125 different shapes and colors together, and of the theme they selected for our chapel, "The Tree of Life," with an open Bible featured in the center of the window around which the stained glass elements swirl and flow. They wanted only to sign their work and we, of course, granted their request. To this day, their handiwork calls me to worship whenever I sit in one of the pews either alone or with other worshippers. Allow me to invite you join us May 1–4, 2018, to take a journey into the Word of God through the event we now call Harbor. When you arrive, I urge you to take a deep breath and consider the marvelous mystery of color and light of the stained glass in our chapel by the sea. As a mosaic of Christians from around the world assemble, Pepperdine will sign its work with song, prayer, fellowship, and study. Ours is a labor of love for you and for the Lord’s church. As with the stained glass in our chapel, God’s Word and Jesus Christ will be central to all that transpires, and his peace, confidence, and warmth will be enabled by the Holy Spirit that comforts us and calms the waters of this tumultuous world— not unlike a welcome harbor in our seaward journey. Pepperdine University wants nothing more than to be your port and respite during this week together. On our final night, we will sing together “The Lord Bless You and Keep You.” May that benediction sign our work for this year and may God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit illuminate your path and service until we meet again. Indeed, may the Lord bless you and keep you in all ways and always. Andrew K. Benton President and CEO 1 MESSAGE FROM Mike Cope I know you were wondering, so here’s what Jimmy Buffett has to say about the Holy Spirit: Vampires, Mummies, and the Holy Ghost, These are the things that terrify me the most No aliens, psychopaths, or MTV hosts Scare me like vampires, mummies, and the Holy Ghost! I heard very little about the Holy Spirit or the Trinity growing up. Like Alexander Campbell himself, many of us were afraid that a focus on the Spirit would lead to emotional excesses. However, the New Testament is full of references to the ministry of the Spirit. (The Greek word “pneuma” appears over 350 times!) This Spirit is the Paraclete whom Jesus promised when he said it was better for us that he leave following his resurrection. The Spirit is the moving force behind the witnessing of the early church in Acts. And the Holy Spirit is the power behind the transformation that Paul expects of those who have been baptized into Jesus. God’s Spirit is, in the images of scripture itself, the wind that blows new life into God’s people, the river that flows from the relationship of the Trinity, and the fire that empowers and emboldens Christ- followers. We are both individually and collectively “the temple of the Holy Spirit.” It’s going to be quite an adventure—thinking and praying through the theme “The Spirit-Filled People of God.” Following a Prayer School led by Brian Zahnd, we will open the theme on May 1 with Rick Atchley speaking about his experience of walking with the Spirit and DOWNLOAD OUR close on May 4 with Dan Rodriguez challenging us to be open to the MOBILE APP fresh leading of God’s Spirit in mission. for access to information on This beautiful campus will be waiting for you. And the week will be class updates, book signings, a harbor for your spirit. Trust me, since 1986 it has been just that for exhibitors, and more! me: a place to find safety and shelter, and also a place to refuel for launching back out. Office of Church Relations Michael W. • A Response to Fellowship Compromises in the Church of Christ Dub Mcclish
A Response to Fellowship Compromises in The Church of Christ Dub McClish Introduction Satan and all of his minions outside the church have always opposed it. He did his best to prevent the Lord from establishing the church in the first place. Although he was allowed to put the Lord to death on the cross, thus employing even “the gates of Hades,” he could not prevail and, Christ built His church just as He had promised (Mat. 16:18)1. Since the establishment of the church, God’s faithful people in it have been a holy nation under siege by a world of allied forces consisting of atheism, humanism, paganism, hedonism, and denominationalism. Satan will not cease his opposition to the God-beloved and blood-bought church of Christ until he is finally cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, there to be forever confined (Rev. 20:10). From time to time there have been those spiritual “fifth columnists,” traitors within the kingdom of Christ, who are guilty of spiritual high treason. While feigning loyalty to their Commander-in-Chief and His Constitution, all the while they are consorting with the enemy. They sometimes have great swelling words of praise for the enemy while they harshly criticize and belittle the Lord’s elect in the very presence of the foe. In the last third of the twentieth century the number of these modern-day Judases has proliferated. They are in places of immense influence as elders, preachers, publishers, editors, authors, and university administrators and professors. These ungodly and misguided brethren are attacking the church at every fundamental point of doctrine and practice, thereby attempting to change it to fit their culturally-dictated agenda.

  • Is FHU Serious About Commending a Clown Ministry?
Is FHU Serious about Commending a Clown Ministry? Gary McDade In the late ‘70s Time magazine ran a story about the introduction of clowns into the ministry in denominational churches. Members of the church of Christ who commented on it reacted with more sadness than surprise due to the loss of dignity for things divine. More recently a local congregation has adopted the clown concept. The degradation of the Sycamore View Church of Christ in Memphis into denominationalism is demonstrated by the description of the clown ministry on the church’s website: “The Sycamore View Church of Christ Funnybones Clown Troupe was born in January, 2000. It had been a vision of Ed ‘Shivers’ Cookenham and his wife Leanne ‘Sadie’ Braddock to start a clown ministry. The idea was presented to the church’s Youth Minister, Joe Godley, who thought it was a great idea. Shortly after he told the youth group about it eight young men and women said yes. When the clown classes started in early February of 2000 the goal was to get ready for our church’s mission trip to Donetsk, Ukraine” (http://svcc). The disappointment of developments deepens when a full page ad on the last page of the so-called Christian Chronicle which boasts a circulation of near 100,000 reads: “As far as Lisa’s quest to become a clown, she put her trust in Michelle that one day it might come true. Michelle took her to her home congregation, the Sycamore View Church of Christ, which just happened to have a clown ministry, complete with make-up, training...the whole circus.

  • Fundamentals of the Faith
Third Annual TRUTH IN LOVE LECTURESHIP Theme: Fundamentals Of The Faith May 12-16, 1993 PAUL SAIN, DIRECTOR Hosted By The East Hill Church Of Christ 509 E. Madison •• 1Pulaski, TN 38478 1993 Printed in the United States of America A Product Of Sain Publications 217 E. Jefferson ••Pulaski, TN 38478 (615) 363-6905 or 363-8868 2 INTRODUCTION This is our Third Annual Lectureship. The theme for the first series was: “Stedfast, Unmoveable, Always Abounding.” The theme for the second series was: “Soberly, Righteously, and Godly.” These first two series of lessons enjoyed significant success, for which we are thankful. The elders of the East Hill church have always been sincerely concerned about faithfully fulfilling their responsibility of overseeing and feeding the flock, over whom they have the charge from the heavenly Father. This grave responsibility is intensified especially in light of false teachers and doctrines existing all around. While they recognize the automony of each congregation, it has also been their desire to encourage, participate with, and provide solid faithful material and lessons for all Christians throughout our area. The elders at East Hill decided to conduct and host a lectureship here, believing it would be an appropriate way to teach and stand for that which is right in the sight of God, and oppose the false ideas and ways being advocated by men among us today, in the brotherhood, and from those in the world. The theme for the lectureship this year is: “Fundamentals Of The Faith.” Various thoughts are needed to convey the reason for this twenty- one lesson overview of many of the basic truths of the gospel of Christ.

  • 4.4. Cultural and Paleontological Resources
City of Malibu Environmental Impact Analysis Cultural and Paleontological Resources 4.4. Cultural and Paleontological Resources This section identifies cultural resources present within the Project area, evaluates potential Project-related impacts on those resources, and provides mitigation measures, as applicable. Paleontological resources are also discussed in this section because both cultural and paleontological resources are treated as cultural resources under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Historical built environment and archaeological resources are discussed and analyzed first, followed by the discussion and analysis of paleontological resources. The information contained in this section was compiled from survey results as well as recommendations contained in the Historical and Archaeological Resources Technical Report for the Malibu Civic Center Wastewater Treatment Facility Project, which was prepared in March 2014 for the City of Malibu by ICF International. The survey of cultural resources was conducted under the provisions of Section 15064.5 of the State CEQA Guidelines and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended. The Project would be constructed in three phases and has four main elements that could result in cultural and paleontological resources impacts: 1) wastewater treatment facility; 2) pump stations; 3) wastewater collection and recycled water distribution system pipelines; and 4) percolation ponds and groundwater injection wells. For the purposes of this section, “Project area” refers to the area that encompasses the extents of the four main elements described above and the area that would be served by these proposed Project facilities, and “Project site” refers specifically to those areas that would be disturbed by construction activities associated with these four main elements.
