News from the OA Society Arts Review News from the School Letters from Oas Obituaries and Tributes from the EDITOR
ALDENHAMIANA ISSUE 45 October 2017 News from the OA Society Arts Review News from the School Letters from OAs Obituaries and tributes FROM THE EDITOR One of the things that has always struck me about Aldenham is its sense of community. I was only at Aldenham Aldenhamiana for two years in the Sixth Form, but No.45 October 2017 even visiting the School for the first Published by The Old Aldenhamian Society time, it had a feel about it that I have Aldenham School, Elstree, Hertfordshire WD6 3AJ UK never forgotten. It’s a feeling of Email: [email protected] friendship and community that Web: www.oldaldenhamian.org permeates throughout the School, and, as a weekly Tel: +44 (0)1923 858 122 boarder, Aldenham always felt like a home away from home. Returning to School in January after a five year absence, I felt the same as I did when I visited for the first time. Aldenham has once again become a big part of my life, for which I am extremely grateful. One of my aims as the new Editor of the OA Review is Contents to try and involve as many OAs as possible, whatever their age, in the magazine. Neil Sutherland (1966-70) has done a fantastic job over the last seven years he has served as 2 From the OA Society President in targeting younger OAs, and encouraging them to come to Society events. His successor, James James- 2 From the President’s Desk Crook (M1968-72), will be continuing Neil’s good work, and we are looking forward to welcoming OAs of all ages 4 OA Day to upcoming events. -

Telling the True Story
Bachelor Thesis Telling The True Story Queerbaiting, representation, and fan resistance in the BBC Sherlock fandom Suzanne Frenk 613191 Algemene Cultuurwetenschappen (Culture Studies) School of Humanities Tilburg University Supervisor: Dr. P. K. Varis Second Reader: Dr. I. E. L. Maly August 18, 2017 Synopsis In this thesis, I follow an online community on Tumblr revolving around a self- proclaimed conspiracy theory called TJLC. This group is part of the broader community of fans of the BBC TV show Sherlock, and is focused on ‘The Johnlock Conspiracy’: the belief that the two main characters of the show, John and Sherlock, are bisexual and gay, respectively, and will ultimately end up as a romantic couple, which would make Sherlock a mainstream TV show with explicit and positive LGBTQIA+ representation. This visibility is especially important to LGBTQIA+ individuals within the TJLC community, who want to see their identities more often and more accurately represented on television. The fact that the creators of Sherlock, as well as several of the actors in the show, are either part of the LGBTQIA+ community themselves or known supporters, works to further strengthen TJLC’ers’ trust in the inevitable unfolding of the story into a romantic plot. The fact that the TJLC community is based on a conspiracy theory not only makes it a remarkable example of fan culture, but has also led to many close readings of the show and its characters – from the textual level to symbolism to the musical score – on a level that can often be seen as close to academic. These pieces of so-called ‘meta’ have led to many predictions about the direction of the show, such as the strong belief that ‘Johnlock’ would become real in season four of the series. -

The Empty Hearse”
“Everything Was Anticipated, Every Eventuality Allowed For”: Fan Service, Past and Present, in “The Empty Hearse” Maria Alberto, Cleveland State University Title character Sherlock Holmes makes an oddly encompassing statement toward the beginning of “The Empty Hearse,” the seventh episode of the BBC’s 2010-present show Sherlock: as he prepares to explain a crucial plan to best friend John Watson, Holmes asserts that “Everything was anticipated, every eventuality allowed for” (“The Empty Hearse”). While Holmes is implying that his planning was extensive enough to prepare for every possible outcome, Watson’s reaction of confusion and anger clearly puts the lie to the detective’s assertion of infallibility – much in the same way that fans might put the lie to the show writers’ confidence of fulfilling all audience hopes for Sherlock’s heavily-anticipated third season. According to Christopher Redmond, Sherlock Holmes one of the most prolific characters from literature (232), so often and so widely portrayed that it is nearly impossible to count exactly how many times he has made an appearance in either traditional or contemporary media. In a 2009 estimate, though, Redmond enumerates over 200 films (232-242), over 6,000 scholarly articles (290-1), and multiple additional offerings in media ranging from theatre and television to music, comics, and television. This wealth and variety of Holmes-derived narratives can be attributed to a number of factors, including the “timeless” appeal of the adventure story, Holmes’s pioneering deductive method, and/or Watson’s Everyman-esque insight into the workings of detective procedure – but the consistent demand for and popularity of Sherlock Holmes stories also stems, in large part, from inherent audience participation. -

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES Amanda Abbington Miss Mardle in Mr
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES Amanda Abbington Miss Mardle in Mr. Selfridge Season 2 and Mary Morstan in Sherlock, Season 3 Beloved by PBS viewers as Jason Isaac’s destined love match in Case Histories, Series 1 on MYSTERY!, Amanda Abbington plays another romantically starved protagonist in Mr. Selfridge— namely the kind-hearted, cruelly exploited head of accessories, Miss Mardle. She also stars in Sherlock, Season 3 as Mary, the surprisingly complicated nurse/lover who is getting Martin Freeman’s Dr. Watson over the trauma of Sherlock’s supposed suicide. She previously worked with Freeman on the British television filmMen Only in 2000, and the two have been in close touch ever since. Amanda’s recent British TV credits include the one-off comedy Joe Mistry, the gritty drama series Postcode, and the supernatural soap opera Being Human, in which she played a vampire. Amanda is much admired in the UK for her starring role in the critically acclaimed comedy series Married Single Other, which aired in 2010. Poirot fans remember her as the voodoo-doll-making arts teacher, Miss Blake, in Cat Among the Pigeons, which aired on MYSTERY! in 2009. Jeremy Piven Harry Gordon Selfridge in Mr. Selfridge Chicago native Jeremy Piven stars as fellow Chicagoan Harry Gordon Selfridge in MASTERPIECE’s series about the mercantile genius who showed early 20th-century London how to shop. Among his many notable roles, Piven is best known as movie agent Ari Gold in the hit series Entourage, which aired for eight seasons and won Piven three Emmy® Awards and a Golden Globe®. The Entourage feature film, which will be produced by Warner Brothers, will start production in February in Los Angeles. -

Sherlock Season 3 Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman on MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! January 19, 26, and February 2 at 9:58Pm ET on PBS
Sherlock—Back from the Dead! Sherlock Season 3 Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman On MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! January 19, 26, and February 2 at 9:58pm ET on PBS You can’t keep a dead detective down. Seemingly six feet under at the end of the last series, Sherlock is miraculously back as the acclaimed super-sleuth played by Benedict Cumberbatch (The Fifth Estate, Star Trek Into Darkness) with Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, The Office UK) as his too-trusting sidekick, Dr. John Watson. The eagerly anticipated Sherlock Season 3 airs on MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! in three exhilarating episodes on Sundays, January 19, 26, and February 2, 2014 at 9:58pm, following the broadcast of Downton Abbey on PBS (check local listings). The series is a contemporary reinvention of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories by creative team Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) and Mark Gatiss. The writers, cast, and crew have been honored with a Peabody Award, a host of Primetime Emmy® nominations, and many other accolades. Like viewers, critics have been insatiable. The San Francisco Chronicle wrote: “If the proof of quality is that a show leaves you craving more, Sherlock has quality to burn.” And Daily Variety implored: “…to borrow a line from another famous U.K. author, ‘Please sir, I want some more.’” Cumberbatch and Freeman are joined by co-star Amanda Abbington (Mr. Selfridge, Case Histories) as Mary Morstan, Dr. Watson’s devoted love interest. Also appearing is Lars Mikkelsen (Borgen, English title: The Killing) as the arch-villain that Sherlock calls “the most dangerous man we’ve ever encountered”—which is saying a lot! Returning cast members include Rupert Graves (The Forsyte Saga, God on Trial) as D.I. -
