Variables in Mathematics Education
Variables in Mathematics Education Susanna S. Epp DePaul University, Department of Mathematical Sciences, Chicago, IL 60614, USA http://www.springer.com/lncs Abstract. This paper suggests that consistently referring to variables as placeholders is an effective countermeasure for addressing a number of the difficulties students’ encounter in learning mathematics. The sug- gestion is supported by examples discussing ways in which variables are used to express unknown quantities, define functions and express other universal statements, and serve as generic elements in mathematical dis- course. In addition, making greater use of the term “dummy variable” and phrasing statements both with and without variables may help stu- dents avoid mistakes that result from misinterpreting the scope of a bound variable. Keywords: variable, bound variable, mathematics education, placeholder. 1 Introduction Variables are of critical importance in mathematics. For instance, Felix Klein wrote in 1908 that “one may well declare that real mathematics begins with operations with letters,”[3] and Alfred Tarski wrote in 1941 that “the invention of variables constitutes a turning point in the history of mathematics.”[5] In 1911, A. N. Whitehead expressly linked the concepts of variables and quantification to their expressions in informal English when he wrote: “The ideas of ‘any’ and ‘some’ are introduced to algebra by the use of letters. it was not till within the last few years that it has been realized how fundamental any and some are to the very nature of mathematics.”[6] There is a question, however, about how to describe the use of variables in mathematics instruction and even what word to use for them. -

All units of length in the metric system are derived from the meter. Units SI units: International system of units (French: “SI” means “Système Internationale”) The seven SI base units are: Mass: kg Defined by the prototype “standard kilogram” located in Paris. The standard kilogram is made of Pt metal. Length: m Originally defined by the prototype “standard meter” located in Paris. Then defined as 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the orange-red radiation of Krypton86 under certain specified conditions. (Official definition: The distance traveled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1 / 299 792 458 of a second) Time: s The second is defined as the duration of a certain number of oscillations of radiation coming from Cs atoms. (Official definition: The second is the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation of the hyperfine- level transition of the ground state of the Cs133 atom) Current: A Defined as the current that causes a certain force between two parallel wires. (Official definition: The ampere is that constant current which, if maintained in two straight parallel conductors of infinite length, of negligible circular cross-section, and placed 1 meter apart in vacuum, would produce between these conductors a force equal to 2 × 10-7 Newton per meter of length. Temperature: K One percent of the temperature difference between boiling point and freezing point of water. (Official definition: The Kelvin, unit of thermodynamic temperature, is the fraction 1 / 273.16 of the thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water. Wells Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics (MCTP) University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Abstract: Conversions are listed between basis units of natural units system where ~ = c = 1. Important fundamental constants are given in various equivalent natural units based on GeV, seconds, and meters. Natural units basic conversions Natural units are defined to give ~ = c = 1. All quantities with units then can be written in terms of a single base unit. It is customary in high-energy physics to use the base unit GeV. But it can be helpful to think about the equivalences in terms of other base units, such as seconds, meters and even femtobarns. The conversion factors are based on various combinations of ~ and c (Olive 2014). For example −25 1 = ~ = 6:58211928(15) × 10 GeV s; and (1) 1 = c = 2:99792458 × 108 m s−1: (2) From this we can derive several useful basic conversion factors and 1 = ~c = 0:197327 GeV fm; and (3) 2 11 2 1 = (~c) = 3:89379 × 10 GeV fb (4) where I have not included the error in ~c conversion but if needed can be obtained by consulting the error in ~. Note, the value of c has no error since it serves to define the meter, which is the distance light travels in vacuum in 1=299792458 of a second (Olive 2014). The unit fb is a femtobarn, which is 10−15 barns. A barn is defined to be 1 barn = 10−24 cm2. The prefexes letters, such as p on pb, etc., mean to multiply the unit after it by the appropropriate power: femto (f) 10−15, pico (p) 10−12, nano (n) 10−9, micro (µ) 10−6, milli (m) 10−3, kilo (k) 103, mega (M) 106, giga (G) 109, terra (T) 1012, and peta (P) 1015. -
