The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen
Breakthrough and Concealment: The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Howard Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Breakthrough and Concealment: The Formulaic Dynamics of Character Behavior in Lucan Howard Chen This dissertation analyzes the three main protagonists of Lucan’s Bellum Civile through their attempts to utilize, resist, or match a pattern of action which I call the “formula.” Most evident in Caesar, the formula is a cycle of alternating states of energy that allows him to gain a decisive edge over his opponents by granting him the ability of perpetual regeneration. However, a similar dynamic is also found in rivers, which thus prove to be formidable adversaries of Caesar in their own right. Although neither Pompey nor Cato is able to draw on the Caesarian formula successfully, Lucan eventually associates them with the river-derived variant, thus granting them a measure of resistance (if only in the non-physical realm). By tracing the development of the formula throughout the epic, the dissertation provides a deeper understanding of the importance of natural forces in Lucan’s poem as well as the presence of an underlying drive that unites its fractured world. The Theory of (Exclusively) Local Beables
The Theory of (Exclusively) Local Beables Travis Norsen Marlboro College Marlboro, VT 05344 (Dated: June 17, 2010) Abstract It is shown how, starting with the de Broglie - Bohm pilot-wave theory, one can construct a new theory of the sort envisioned by several of QM’s founders: a Theory of Exclusively Local Beables (TELB). In particular, the usual quantum mechanical wave function (a function on a high-dimensional configuration space) is not among the beables posited by the new theory. Instead, each particle has an associated “pilot- wave” field (living in physical space). A number of additional fields (also fields on physical space) maintain what is described, in ordinary quantum theory, as “entanglement.” The theory allows some interesting new perspective on the kind of causation involved in pilot-wave theories in general. And it provides also a concrete example of an empirically viable quantum theory in whose formulation the wave function (on configuration space) does not appear – i.e., it is a theory according to which nothing corresponding to the configuration space wave function need actually exist. That is the theory’s raison d’etre and perhaps its only virtue. Its vices include the fact that it only reproduces the empirical predictions of the ordinary pilot-wave theory (equivalent, of course, to the predictions of ordinary quantum theory) for spinless non-relativistic particles, and only then for wave functions that are everywhere analytic. The goal is thus not to recommend the TELB proposed here as a replacement for ordinary pilot-wave theory (or ordinary quantum theory), but is rather to illustrate (with a crude first stab) that it might be possible to construct a plausible, empirically arXiv:0909.4553v3 [quant-ph] 17 Jun 2010 viable TELB, and to recommend this as an interesting and perhaps-fruitful program for future research. -
The Second Law of Thermodynamics Forbids Time Travel
Cosmology, 2014, Vol. 18. 212-222 Cosmology.com, 2014 The Second Law Of Thermodynamics Forbids Time Travel Marko Popovic Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602, USA Abstract Four space-time coordinates define one thermodynamic parameter - Volume. Cell/ organism growth is one of the most fundamental properties of living creatures. The growth is characterized by irreversible change of the volume of the cell/organism. This irreversible change of volume (growth of the cell/organism) makes the system irreversibly change its thermodynamic state. Irreversible change of the systems thermodynamic state makes impossible return to the previous state characterized by state parameters. The impossibility to return the system to the previous state leads to conclusion that even to artificially turn back the arrow of time (as a parameter), it is not possible to turn back the state of the organism and its surroundings. Irreversible change of thermodynamic state of the organism is also consequence of the accumulation of entropy during life. So even if we find the way to turn back the time arrow it is impossible to turn back the state of the thermodynamic system (including organism) because of irreversibility of thermodynamic/ physiologic processes in it. Keywords: Time travel, Entropy, Living Organism, Surroundings, Irreversibility Cosmology, 2014, Vol. 18. 212-222 Cosmology.com, 2014 1. Introduction The idea of time travel has fascinated humanity since ancient times and can be found in texts as old as Mahabharata and Talmud. Later it continued to be developed in literature (i.e. Dickens' “A Christmas Carol”, or Twain's “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court”…). -

The arrow of time Volume 7 Paul Davies Summer 2014 Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science, Arizona State University, journal homepage P.O. Box 871504, Tempe, AZ 852871504, USA. www.euresisjournal.org [email protected] Abstract The arrow of time is often conflated with the popular but hopelessly muddled concept of the “flow” or \passage" of time. I argue that the latter is at best an illusion with its roots in neuroscience, at worst a meaningless concept. However, what is beyond dispute is that physical states of the universe evolve in time with an objective and readily-observable directionality. The ultimate origin of this asymmetry in time, which is most famously captured by the second law of thermodynamics and the irreversible rise of entropy, rests with cosmology and the state of the universe at its origin. I trace the various physical processes that contribute to the growth of entropy, and conclude that gravitation holds the key to providing a comprehensive explanation of the elusive arrow. 1. Time's arrow versus the flow of time The subject of time's arrow is bedeviled by ambiguous or poor terminology and the con- flation of concepts. Therefore I shall begin my essay by carefully defining terms. First an uncontentious statement: the states of the physical universe are observed to be distributed asymmetrically with respect to the time dimension (see, for example, Refs. [1, 2, 3, 4]). A simple example is provided by an earthquake: the ground shakes and buildings fall down. We would not expect to see the reverse sequence, in which shaking ground results in the assembly of a building from a heap of rubble. -

Interpreting Supersymmetry
Interpreting Supersymmetry David John Baker Department of Philosophy, University of Michigan [email protected] October 7, 2018 Abstract Supersymmetry in quantum physics is a mathematically simple phenomenon that raises deep foundational questions. To motivate these questions, I present a toy model, the supersymmetric harmonic oscillator, and its superspace representation, which adds extra anticommuting dimensions to spacetime. I then explain and comment on three foundational questions about this superspace formalism: whether superspace is a sub- stance, whether it should count as spatiotemporal, and whether it is a necessary pos- tulate if one wants to use the theory to unify bosons and fermions. 1 Introduction Supersymmetry{the hypothesis that the laws of physics exhibit a symmetry that transforms bosons into fermions and vice versa{is a long-standing staple of many popular (but uncon- firmed) theories in particle physics. This includes several attempts to extend the standard model as well as many research programs in quantum gravity, such as the failed supergravity program and the still-ascendant string theory program. Its popularity aside, supersymmetry (SUSY for short) is also a foundationally interesting hypothesis on face. The fundamental equivalence it posits between bosons and fermions is prima facie puzzling, given the very different physical behavior of these two types of particle. And supersymmetry is most naturally represented in a formalism (called superspace) that modifies ordinary spacetime by adding Grassmann-valued anticommuting coordinates. It 1 isn't obvious how literally we should interpret these extra \spatial" dimensions.1 So super- symmetry presents us with at least two highly novel interpretive puzzles. Only two philosophers of science have taken up these questions thus far. -

Here we consider this phenomenon in more detail. 1 Introduction As follows from all our past results, the fine structure of the spectrum of amplitude fluctuations (the shape of the corre- sponding histograms) is determined by the motion (orienta- tion) of the object studied (the laboratory) in relation to spa- tial inhomogeneities [2]. The spatial pattern (arrangement in space) of these inhomogeneities is stable: as the Earth ro- tates about its axis and moves along the circumsolar orbit, similar histogram shapes are realized repeatedly with the cor- responding periods (daily, near-monthly, yearly) [3, 4]. -
