Newsletter April-May 2015 BETWEEN THE PAGES Tararua District Library - Newsletter Apr-May 2015 NZ’s First World War Centenary 2014-2019 The centenary of New Zealand's participation in the First World War is being marked from 2014-2019 through commemorative events, projects and activities in all parts of the country. Tararua District Library will mark the significance of ANZAC Day 2015 by closing it’s Dannevirke and Pahiatua Library branches on ANZAC Day Saturday 25th 2015. As Anzac Day 2015 is also the first public holiday to be affected by Labour’s Bill to Monday-ise, Tararua District Library branches will all close on Monday 27th April. The First World War left a deep and lasting impact on all New Zealander’s for generations to come. Most, if not all New Zealand families will have stories to tell about how it affected family members. 'WW100' is a shared identity for New Zealand First World War centenary projects and activities, from official state ceremonies and legacy projects to community initiatives and personal projects. The WW100 programme offers every New Zealander the chance to consider the impact of the First World War — whether you reflect on the nature of war, remember family members who served, visit a memorial, or think about how your community was affected by events long ago. For more information, go to : ww100.govt.nz Do you have a WW1 Story to Share? Jack and Henry Howes were two Ormondville brothers who went off to war. Jack didn't come home. Henry did come home, wounded. As niece and daughter, Nancy points out, if Henry hadn't come home, he wouldn't have met Nancy’s mother, got married, and she wouldn't be here. Jack Howes (left) Nancy remembers her mother tending to his shrapnel leg Henry Howes (right) wound which troubled him greatly over the years. More of our stories can be found on Tararua Kete (digital archive). If you too would like to share your ancestor's history, then bring along an old WW1 family photo/memento to your local library along with your family war story. Or you can email your images and stories to [email protected] or upload to http://ketetararua.peoplesnetworknz.info/ We may publish photos and stories received in our library blog or Facebook page, or Tararua Kete (digital archive) which are creative commons copyright (meaning anyone can use the information). If this is not OK with you, please let us know. • The 1934 Pahiatua Earthquake Sequence: Analysis of Observational and Instrumental Data
221 THE 1934 PAHIATUA EARTHQUAKE SEQUENCE: ANALYSIS OF OBSERVATIONAL AND INSTRUMENTAL DATA Gaye Downes1' 2, David Dowrick1' 4, Euan Smith3' 4 and Kelvin Berryman1' 2 ABSTRACT Descriptive accounts and analysis of local seismograms establish that the epicentre of the 1934 March 5 M,7.6 earthquake, known as the Pahiatua earthquake, was nearer to Pongaroa than to Pahiatua. Conspicuous and severe damage (MM8) in the business centre of Pahiatua in the northern Wairarapa led early seismologists to name the earthquake after the town, but it has now been found that the highest intensities (MM9) occurred about 40 km to the east and southeast of Pahiatua, between Pongaroa and Bideford. Uncertainties in the location of the epicentre that have existed for sixty years are now resolved with the epicentre determined in this study lying midway between those calculated in the 1930' s by Hayes and Bullen. Damage and intensity summaries and a new isoseismal map, derived from extensive newspaper reports and from 1934 Dominion Observatory "felt reports", replace previous descriptions and isoseismal maps. A stable solution for the epicentre of the mainshock has been obtained by analysing phase arrivals read from surviving seismograms of the rather small and poorly equipped 1934 New Zealand network of twelve stations (two privately owned). The addition of some teleseismic P arrivals to this solution shifts the location of the epicentre by less than 10 km. It lies within, and to the northern end of, the MM9 isoseismal zone. Using local instrumental data larger aftershocks and other moderate magnitude earthquakes that occurred within 10 days and 50 km of the mainshock have also been located.

Unfortunately, all inter- school swimming events have been cancelled for 2021 as under Alert Level 2 we are unable to have gatherings larger than 100. The children had a fantastic day and especially enjoyed their lunch bags. Thank you ASCA for running the BBQ and preparing lunch. Our Junior children (Year 1 - 3) took part in fun events in the pool during the morning. After lunch the Senior children (Year 4 - 8) competed in the first ever House Group Swimming Competition. I was so impressed with how the older children supported and encouraged the younger ones.
