early 60 years ago, York University founder Murray G. Ross staged a photo of himself seated at a desk in the middle of a stark, muddy farm- er’s field dusted with snow. He captioned it, “I’m here…now where is my university?” Today passengers stepping out of the stylish new York U subway station — where they dis– embark at almost the exact spot that picture was taken — might not believe it’s the same place. York has come a long Nway, evolving into a bustling academic hub used by more than 50,000 students pursuing the arts, business, law, health sciences — even space exploration. Would Murray G. Ross even recognize his university? Current president Rhonda Lenton thinks he would. “The core compon- ents are still here. We have a commitment to social justice, to being a pro- gressive university and a leader in social change for the public good,” she says. “That’s always been part of the York he established. What Ross might not have anticipated is how the university has become comprehensive.” Lenton is referring to the school’s recent expansion into hard sci- ence, as well as its renowned business and law programs. It’s a twist for “Hippie U,” known over its first several decades as a ground- breaking school of liberal and fine arts. To get there, students and faculty willingly endured so-so transit on their commute an hour northwest of downtown Toronto. But York has always had a knack for reinvention, thanks to its late founder, who campaigned hard for an independent university. Early plans earmarked it as a satellite cam- pus for the University of Toronto, but Ross’s persistence gave York the freedom to practically rethink the entire modern curriculum. “York was wonderful on that. We had an opportunity to create all different courses,” recalls professor emerita Ann Shteir. She began teaching at the school’s division of humanities in 1972 and went on to help establish feminist research at the Keele campus. “One of the joys of women’s studies was that it was a new field, and the university encouraged us to play.”

Ce que Ross n’avait pas prévu c’est combien l’université s’élargirait. » Lenton veut parler de la récente expansion de l’établissement vers les sciences pures, et de ses réputés cursus d’affaires et de droit. Une volte-face pour la « Hippie U » qui fut longtemps une institution à la pointe des beaux arts et de la libre pensée. Pour faire le trajet d’une heure environ depuis le centre de Toronto, étudiants et professeurs devaient supporter des transports en commun basiques. Mais, grâce à son regretté fondateur, qui s’est battu pour son indépendance, York a toujours eu le chic pour se réinventer. Le projet initial était pour un campus satellite de l’Université de Toronto, mais la persistance de Ross a donné à York la liberté de repenser presque tout le cursus moderne.

This led to the first women’s studies Ph.D. in Canada (established in 1992), and Shteir notes that it has expanded to include cutting-edge transgender research. York was also the first Canadian university to offer an undergrad degree in dance, and the first to establish a faculty of environmental studies, which now runs an innovative eco-campus in the Costa Rican rainforest. These might be slightly overshadowed, however, by the aerospace engineering department’s contributions to the Phoenix Mars mission in 2007–08, which helped to put York research on the map. The list doesn’t end there. “I would also talk about how Osgoode Hall Law School is leading in the response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission recommendations,” Lenton says, “and how you see the Schulich School of Business leading in cor- porate social responsibility.” Responding and adapting to the needs of modern Canada has always been a focus at York. The university was established with the help of Lester B. Pearson’s Liberal government to ensure that the baby boom- ers graduating from high school in the 1960s would have a fair shot when applying. Now it seems history is repeating itself, with multicul- tural Toronto sprawling north, driven by immigration. In response to demographic pressures, York is opening a campus in Markham, north- east of downtown, in time for the 2020–21 school year. “When you look at the map, the York campus is at the centre of the GTA,” points out Rebecca Pillai Riddell, a faculty of health researcher who works on a partner project on infant pain, downtown at the Hos- pital for Sick Children. “The subway and the Markham campus help us be truly accessible to downtown, as well as the northern suburbs,

a “The Quad is about developing a building with great social amen- ities and private space to create a sense of community,” says Guela Solow-Ruda, architect and principal at ARK, one of several part- ners on the project. “It has studio apartments, green space, study lounges, and even communal kitchens, where maybe a dozen kids can get together and cook a turkey.” The Quad is designed to accommodate students living a long way from home — a new reality in the small-world, connected inter- national realm of global education York is wired in to. Visually, the Quad fits right into the campus, which is now marked by sleek, mod- ern glass boxes and high-concept designs, breathing life into a univer- sity once known for dowdy brutalist architecture. “We’re talking concrete architecture at its finest, back in the ’60s and ’70s,” says Gord Ash, former general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays (now with the Milwaukee Brewers), who graduated from York in 1974. “Now there’s an impressive-looking core,” he says. “Pioneer Village seems like a complete anachronism where it’s located. in, but now it feels like it doesn’t belong.” Ash is referring to Black Creek Pioneer Village, a Confederation- era working village and museum adjacent to York. It provides the name for the second new subway stop at the Keele campus, on a line that extends to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre. Here, rapini farms have been replaced by businesses, condos and housing projects, filled with the next batch of high school kids hoping to attend the university. Visuellement, il s’intègre dans le campus qui compte désormais d’élégants blocs de verres modernes et des conceptions ambitieuses qui donnent un nou- veau souffle à une université connue pour son style brutaliste démodé. « Il s’agit de l’âge d’or du béton dans les années 1960 et 70 », dit Gord Ash, l’ex-directeur général des Toronto Blue Jays (aujourd’hui chez les Milwaukee Brewers) qui a eu sa licence à York en 1974. « Désormais, il y a un centre impressionnant qui n’existait pas aupa- ravant, dit-il. Frederick House Lake in Timmins is just one of some 250,000 lakes in Ontario. During the summer, it hosts cottagers, swimmers, and anglers out for a prize pickerel or some whitefish for a fine shore lunch. In the winter, though, it’s serene — the perfect spot to set up an ice fishing hut, light a fire and watch the snow fall. The lake was named for a Hudson’s Bay Company post, established in 1785, which became the site of violent clashes between rival fur traders; then it was abandoned in 1812. On a winter’s day now, you only hear the sounds of the wind and an occasional wolf howl. –A.R. Le lac Frederick House de Timmins n’est qu’un des quelque 250 000 lacs d’Ontario.
