ROADWORKS IN THE

A long stretch of the A31 through the New Forest is to close overnight for almost two months, between 9pm and 6am from 7 October- for around seven weeks. So please be warned- and if midweek games take you to or from the Bournemouth and or Poole area please do allow for extra journey time. The westbound carriageway of the A31 between the M27 junction 2 (for and Fawley) and and the eastbound carriageway of the A31 between the Ashley Heath roundabout and the M27 junction 1 (for ) plus slip roads at junctions in those sections will be closed. We hear that there will be a 50 mph speed limit westbound on the A31 between the entry slip road at M27 junction 1 and Picket Post, and eastbound between the entry slip road at Picket Post and the slip road at M27 junction 1. As an aside it is understood that the above will not to coincide with closures of Blackwater Junction, and of particular import to those visiting Christchurch’s Hurn Bridge ground, which is closed between 8pm and 6am a number of weeknights to allow engineers to begin their preparations for the installation of new traffic lights and kerbs, as well as road widening and surfacing works.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Gary Day writes TOTTON & ELING 3-0 FOLLAND SPORTS TWO Wessex Division 1 sides met in the Southampton Senior Cup at Miller Park. Both clubs had placed their fingerprints on the cup itself in its 110-year history – Follands in 1940, 1985 and 1992 and Totton & Eling (in their days as BAT) in 1976 and 1989. Even the three officials had collected medals in the final as well. That’s the history dealt with, so let’s get on with the present … Well, it was a rather wet evening but it is pleasing to report that the pitch was in a most splendid condition. Follands searched for an early goal but Mansell, having received a Blake pass, manoeuvred well to work a shooting chance but dragged it wide. That was followed by a punt out of defence that put Mansell on a chase but Eyres, in the home goal, was out to thwart him. Rowe got up to head a left-wing corner at the far post and would be a little disappointed to be off the mark for the visitors. The Millers were making little impact on the Planemakers goal in those early minutes but Callaway took advantage of a visiting defender dawdling on the ball but directed his shot well wide of the mark. T&E had another chance to go in front just after the half-hour mark when Dylan Gain crossed, Macaulay’s header was blocked but it fell to Lichowe, who had a good opportunity but shot wide. Eyres denied another Mansell effort with his legs. With half-time approaching, a Macaulay pass tried to put in Callaway but Whieldon in the visitors’ net denied him. But, with their next attack the Millers did go in front when Spencer (the first of two subs made by T&E due to first half injuries) was released down the left, he crossed it in, the ball went to the far post where Lichowe showed good awareness with a pass to Dylan GAIN who knocked it in from close range – a fine move. HT 1-0 Dylan GAIN scored his, and his side’s second, early in the second moiety with a direct free-kick from around 22-yards out. From there, the two goal lead seldom looked under threat; in fact, it was the Millers who looked the more likely to further trouble the scorers. Burns found Macaulay whose chipped effort deflected off Rowe’s leg whilst an Eyres clearance was headed on by Burns to Macaulay who put a good chance wide. Within a further minute, and the 74th of the game, the Millers wrapped it up when Lichowe was in a good position on the right, his shot was aimed for the far corner but Whieldon, at full stretch, parried it and there to collect the scraps was WOTTON to score. Wotton had two further chances but his first was deflected wide and his excellent low volley from a Spencer cross hit the post. Eyres was called on to tip over a fine Blake effort late on to keep his clean sheet but the visitors were already a beaten side, and a safe passage for the Millers on the night. FT 3-0

John Spalding writes CHRISTCHURCH 6-0 QUEENS PARK ATHLETIC ON a rainy blustery night Christchurch exerted early pressure with their pacy attack causing early problems for the Queens Park defence. After three minutes it appeared that the early pressure paid dividends with the ball in the Queens Park net only for the flag to be raised for offside. Queens Park settled more and secured a first corner after 12 minutes which Christchurch dealt with competently. Keeper Shaw saved Queens Parks after 20 minutes with a superb tackle on the edge of his box as the home side looked certain to take the lead. Three minutes later Christchurch took the lead KIRKHAM cut in from the right to score with a low shot across the keeper. The same player almost increased the lead with a powerful shot which cleared the crossbar. Christchurch increased their lead when LONG lobbed the keeper after a spell of pressure. With half time approaching KING made it 3-0 sending the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot. HT 3-0 The second half resumed with Christchurch exerting pressure and after 2 minutes increased their lead to 4- 0 with an excellent strike from WILCOCK.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 13

Queens Park battled bravely but their opponents were more organised and quicker to the ball and after 59 minutes LONG made it 5-0. After 65 minutes Queens Park had a fine shot on target but Frampton was able to gather. The scoring was completed on 84 minutes when LONG completed his hattrick after his pressure forced an error. Queens Park battled to the end and the score was a little harsh on them but Christchurch had too much pace, movement and ball control for them. FT 6-0

Mark James writes BASHLEY 5-0 MILFORD BASHLEY sitting 11th in the Wessex Premier came up against a strong Milford side that are currently 3rd in their first season in the Bournemouth Hayward league Premier division. This was their first game in the Bournemouth Senior cup which Bashley won in 2018. This second round tie was taking place on a cold, wet and windy Tuesday evening under the lights at Bashley Road. An excellent crowd in excess of 100 were there to see this entertaining tie. The first 20 minutes saw chances at both ends with no one able to break the deadlock. Then an effort for Will Prior was deflected on to the Milford bar. After 25 minutes a shot from Lewis Ross was deflected into his own goal by the out of luck Ronan Sutton, this followed on 34 minutes by a wonder strike from Harry BUNCE to see Bashley into a 2-0 lead. The remainder of the half saw Bashley settle with more possession and were only troubled by the odd Milford counterattack. HT 2-0 The weather had certainly not improved for the second half with the rain hammering down, 4 minutes in saw the impressive Harry BUNCE find space on the edge of the area to calmly slot under the Milford stopper. Two minutes later saw Lewis ROSS put the game to bed with the fourth for Bashley. Plenty of substitutions in the following passages of play as Milford sought a conciliation goal. In the 86th minute Jamie WEBBER ended the scoring for an impressive Bashley to make it 5-0. Plenty of positives to be taken from a plucky Milford side who never gave up; the conditions didn’t help either side who entertained to the finish when Referee Tony Smith ended proceeding following one additional minute. FT 5-0

John Gorman writes AMESBURY TOWN 1-3 PETERSFIELD TOWN ON a damp evening that was thankfully nowhere near as bad as the doom-laden scenarios expounded in the morning weather forecasts, Petersfield advanced to the next round of the Sydenhams League Cup with two late goals giving them victory over Premier Division Amesbury Town and a trip to Hamble Club in Round Three. The two sides came into what was an entertaining ninety minutes in vastly differing form with the visitors enjoying a good run of results and the home side generally struggling and with the need to get the previous Saturday’s debacle out of their system. Neither side was at full strength, injury and unavailability taking its toll, but both went forward at every opportunity with Amesbury going close in the opening minute, a goal line clearance denying them in a scramble following a corner. Amesbury’s George Plank was narrowly wide with an acrobatic overhead effort before Petersfield took the lead after thirteen minutes. A quickly taken throw on the right allowed Will Essai to set Sean Burton free and the full back’s cross was headed or bundled over the line by Will WEBB at the far post. It has to be said that the home side contributed to the goal as their player, having headed the ball over the touchline, stood vehemently claiming the throw rather than defending same. Such is football today. Marvin Orepo’s control enabled him to find space in the Amesbury area but the shot was wide and a good chance gone, while at the other end a long range effort from the industrious Lee Weeks was well held by goalkeeper Matt Petts. The home side continued to press with Lloyd Gardiner seeing a shot deflected wide, Jordon Matthews denied by Pett’s legs and a header from a corner grazing the cross bar. Both number elevens were booked after a rather pointless flare-up before Petersfield came close to a second goal. A long clearance from Petts was chased by Orepo and a home defender, and the latter in trying to deal with the Sunday, 29 September 2019 Page 8 of 22

bouncing ball, sent the forward tumbling over causing loud advice that it was a “last man offence”. Is it not the case that the important point is the denial of a goalscoring opportunity and it is questionable as to whether the forward had total control of the ball. The referee deemed it to be a foul and a yellow card with the resulting free kick blasted into the defensive wall and after the visitors’ Ryan Kennedy had seen two shots blocked in quick succession the half time whistle came with Petersfield a goal to the good. HT 0-1 Amesbury keeper Jordan Tewkesbury was quickly in action on the re-start, confidently claiming a cross in a crowded area before watching his side level the scores in the sixth minute, A free kick, wide on the left and perhaps a dozen yards from the goal line, was driven in low and hard by JORDON MATTHEWS and whether it was missed by all and sundry or took a deflection was difficult to see but it finished in the far corner of the net. Weeks won two strong but fair challenges in midfield and provided a chance for Dalitso Mandson but the shot was mishit and as the usual second half substitutions commenced Tewkesbury had to hurriedly leave his area to deal with an under hit back pass, and was then at full stretch to turn away a free kick from Harry Bedford and it was from the resulting corner that the outcome of the game was perhaps decided. Tewkesbury punched the kick away in the crowded area in which a minor “kerfuffle” then ensued with a visiting player prostrate on the floor. The referee showed considerable coolness and calm in restoring order before, after a lengthy discussion with her Assistant, showing the goalkeeper a red card and awarding a penalty kick. George Plank donned the yellow jersey but could do nothing about substitute Jordan NEAL’s spot kick that put the visitors ahead with some five minutes remaining. Home skipper Jack Vallis moved up front in search of an equaliser but it was Petersfield who scored again in the last minute as Plank’s goal kick went straight to NEAL on the edge of the area and the ball was swiftly rammed into the virtually unguarded goal and it was game over. An enjoyable game that could have gone either way. Petersfield continued their unbeaten run and Amesbury picked themselves up after Saturday but were again let down by their discipline. Petersfield’s two goal substitute will be seeking a starting place and a word for referee Jade Wardle. She was never fazed or flustered despite pressure from players, and in the latter stages the Petersfield bench, and overall had a good game. It was intended that the halftime cake is not mentioned but it was chocolate and delicious – an opinion heartily endorsed by the worthy Petersfield Secretary. FT 1-3

John Gorman writes WHITCHURCH UNITED 4-1 ANDOVER TOWN THE Jamboys moved comfortably in to the last four of the North Hants Senior Cup with a dominant second half performance but anyone who watched the opening fifteen minutes would not, at that stage, have envisaged the final scoreline. Quite simply the home side hardly had a kick during that time but Andover’s failure to turn their early superiority in to goals coupled with subsequent defensive failings turned the game on its head. The visitors had far the better start apart from scything a Whitchurch cross over their own bar and play was almost entirely in the home side’s half with attacks down both flanks causing problems, and Rueben Smith should have perhaps done better when he failed to make proper contact with a Conor Cullingford cross at the far post. New signing Zac Hine was continually involved and it was no surprise when they took the lead after fifteen minutes. Smith more than made up for his earlier lapse with a run down the right before pulling the ball back in to Harrison HALE’s path and the shot flew high into the top of the net. The home side’s main threat came from Craig Rutledge’s pace on the left and Town keeper Dave Tasker twice had to leave his area to deny the speedy wide man. At the other end Owen Trapnell was inches too high with a header from a corner and Tom Pattinson bought a fine diving save out of keeper Konrad Szymaniak before the home side produced an equaliser seemingly out of nowhere on the thirty minute mark. There seemed little danger when Whitchurch were awarded a free kick on the right touchline halfway inside the Andover half but when Connor Bloomfield swung the ball high into the area not one defender moved as Declan SHUTTLEWORTH rose at the far post to head home. The free kick had travelled a long way!

Sunday, 29 September 2019 Page 9 of 22

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 13

Cullingford collected a caution for a challenge and was then substituted, though as the Competition demeans itself by allowing rolling substitutions, he had every chance of re-joining the game at some stage and probably did so. With no more real threats on either goal half time came with the scores level and the home side probably a little relieved. HT 1-1 Visiting skipper Brendan Holmes was too straight with a shot from distance on the re- start and Trapnell was cautioned for a trip that may not have been intentional. Ryan Long, for the home side, saw a header well held by Tasker and a Holmes run and cross found no blue shirts in the area but it was Whitchurch who were now enjoying more of the possession. Trapnell was warned for another challenge and Gary Thorne cautioned for a rather cynical trip before the home side took the lead midway through the half. Nick Yeomans found space on the left and his low cross was turned in at the far post by Lloyd THOMPSON as the ball passed through an again static defence. Tasker was forced to leave his area to deny the same player and SHUTTLEWORTH was just too high before claiming his second goal with ten minutes remaining. The ball was played down the left touchline and the big striker gave the defender five yards start, overhauled him and went on to slide the ball past Tasker with the defender holding a watching brief. A poor clearance by Tasker saw Aaron Randall strike the post and Long adjudged offside when he put the rebound in the net before more poor defending gave the red and white shirts another chance. An unnecessary challenge just inside the area was penalised by the award of a penalty but Tasker pushed Shuttleworth’s kick on to and over the bar to deny the taker his hat trick but, there was still time for a fourth as the game reached the ninety minute mark. Again Shuttleworth was involved, his fierce drive bouncing back of the goalkeeper and LONG was much quicker than the defence to re-act, firing the loose ball into the net to cap a satisfactory win for the home side. Whitchurch are enjoying a good season so far and deserved the win but for Andover it was the recurring problem. The try to, and frequently do, play some nice football but the loss of Shaquille Gwengwe in the close season has left them a little light and there are simply too many defensive errors but the season is still very much in its infancy. FT 4-1

Gary Day writes BROCKENHURST 2-1 EAST COWES VICTORIA THIRTY-SEVEN places separated Premier Division Brockenhurst from their Island visitors for this league cup clash but any ‘Wessex groundhopper’ who turned their back on this in expectation of it being ‘one-way traffic’ certainly made a wrong decision. There was understandable reasoning though – Brock had scored eight last time out, whilst Vics had conceded five! There was a turning point in this match. Vics, leading since the third minute, came close to adding a second goal eleven minutes into the second half but Badgers keeper Webb stuck out his leg to deflect an Ahmed shot but only into Burton’s path who had a decent opportunity to make it 2-0 but would be disappointed to have been off target. A few minutes later a firm home shot struck a Vics defender at close quarters on the arm, which was well to his side. The referee, in a good position, allowed play to continue but his assistant raised his flag and, following consultation, the decision was changed to a penalty kick. Up stepped NWACHUKWU to emphatically wallop the spot-kick into the corner to level the scores - 1-1. After that, Ahmed for Vics, got in a good position but his shot was deflected away by Webb to concede a corner. From there Brockenhurst, having introduced both Ramos and Sheibatzadeh from the bench, dominated the final twenty or so minutes. The two substitutions gave the Badgers some much needed energy with Ramos taking a sweet touch to glide past a visiting defender and his firm low cross just failed to find the lunging Kemplen at the far post. Brock certainly held the initiative now and it was SHEIBATZADEH who sealed the win for his side with a sublime 83rd minute winner. He did well to keep the ball in on the left touchline and beat a defender but, despite an extremely tight angle close to the dead-ball line his shot found the top far corner. After that Ramos also went on a good run, charging into the Vics box like lightning but his shot came off the wrong side of the near post.

Sunday, 29 September 2019 Page 10 of 22

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 13

With the final whistle very close Ramos then latched onto a Bailey pass and with dainty feet swept past a defender but the finish was wide. To rewind to the very beginning of the proceedings, Vics edged into that early lead when Newbold’s shot on the right had been blocked but came to BURTON to poke home at the near post. They held the advantage in the first half too, putting up a good hard-working show to stymie the Brock raids and look dangerous themselves on occasions. Hill had two chances for Brock but keeper Steinborn-Busse deflected the first and Henry West blocked the second. Vics continued to compete well, restricting Brock to a long distance Nwachukwu effort that missed the angle but not by very much. Good play involving Newton and Kemplen, the latter ran through but the Vics keeper blocked the shot and Bullard’s effort went wide. The early second half minutes saw some fine Vics defending from a corner and Newton scuffed it wide. At that point it was looking like a frustrating evening for the home side but in the end, they managed to get over the line and into the ‘hat’ for round three by 2-1, with Vics no doubt ruing that key 64th minute decision. FT 2-1

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

As is often par for the course nowadays with regard to midweek football, a dozen or so matches spread across a miscellany of competitions starting with a rare game on a Monday evening when, at Millers Park, Totton & Eling continued their recent good form with a 3-0 defeat of Follands in the Southampton Senior Cup, Dylan Gain claiming two of the goals. Two Second Round Sydenhams League Cup matches topped Tuesday’s agenda with victories for Petersfield and AFC Stoneham. Petersfield, another side enjoying a rich vein of form at present, won 3-1 at Premier Division Amesbury Town with Jordan Neal coming off the bench to score two late goals, while one goal from Tom Hogan was enough to ensure Stoneham’s progress at Shaftesbury. Petersfield now travel to Hamble Club in Round Three whilst Stoneham will host Bemerton Heath Harlequins. Two games also in the Bournemouth Senior Cup, both of which saw Sydenhams League Club face Bournemouth League opposition with the expected outcome. In a First Round Tie Chris Long scored a hat trick as Christchurch beat Queens Park Athletic 6-0 to earn a Second Round tie with Downton, whilst in the Second Round Bashley scored five without reply against Milford with two goals from Harry Bunce. The North Hants Cup Tie between Andover New Street and Alresford was postponed and there at present appears to be some confusion as to whether it will be re-scheduled. On to Wednesday and the only League match saw Fawley AFC defeat bottom of the table Pewsey Vale 6-1 with Keiran Roche leading the way with two goals whilst in the League Cup all three Island sides were in action. In the big clash at Cowes an attendance in excess of two hundred saw the Yachtsmen bear Newport by the odd goal in five and retain the local bragging rights. East Cowes Vics travelled to Premier Division highfliers Brockenhurst and took the lead through Jimmi Burton before going out to two second half goals, one a penalty. Three games in the Portsmouth Senior Cup and 18 goals. Dan Sibley scored four In US Portsmouth’s 5-0 defeat of Baffins Milton Rovers Reserves, Owen Fee notched a double as AFC Portchester beat Liphook 4-2 and there was a hat trick for Connor Duffin and two goals for Alfie Quick in Horndean’s 7-0 victory over AFC Petersfield. It was not a good week for the North Hants Senior Cup as following the postponement of Tuesday’s game at New Street the tie between Tadley Calleva and Winchester Castle was abandoned in the first half when the floodlights failed. One game was completed however with Whitchurch coming from a goal down to beat Andover Town 4-1 with Declan Shuttleworth scoring twice and also missing a penalty.

Left- Results Secretary Lee Bray presents Cowes Sports Manager Steve Rutter with their MJM Sports Kappa Respect Award for the Premier Division for August. Well done to all involved.

An important reminder for clubs. Photographers are not permitted to be inside the pitch side barrier, this means no part of their body or their equipment. Clubs who are reported for not taking appropriate action when this occurs, will be fined. Some clubs are flaunting the rule and league directive regarding occupancy of benches and the technical area. It is the responsibility of club chairmen and secretaries to ensure compliance. Clubs who fail to do so will be fined.

Tadley Calleva have re-signed Shemar Pettet after a spell away, whilst Paul Coventry has also gone back there after a spell at Alresford Town, and whilst mentioning the Magpies- we see that Mike Gosney has headed there from Lymington Town, and they have signed goalkeeper Jordi Vivaro after Declan McCarthy’s departure.

Towards the end of our FA Vase cup tie at East Cowes Vics Luke Douglas went down injured writes Paul Sturgess, after a lengthy stoppage he had to be substituted. He returned to the bench and his first thought was to apologise to manager Pete Stiles for having to come off. We didn’t know it then but this was to be his last appearance for Fareham. A recurrence of an old injury was serious enough to call an end to his playing days. Luke made his debut as a sixteen-year-old in a 1-1 draw against Winchester on Good Friday 2005 he then played in a 2-2 draw at Privett Park. Luke left Fareham in October 2006 to join Southampton on a two year YTS contract, he stayed there until 2008 when he went to the USA to play for Kansas. In 2009 he returned to Fareham where he quickly became a crowd favourite and has since played around three hundred and ten times for us. Luke has many memories of his time at Cams; his best game being the 2-1 home win against Hayling. Then in the Great Escape season there was the crucial 1-0 away victory at Andover. Probably the biggest game Luke played in was the FA Cup tie with Weymouth which we narrowly lost 1-0. One game that stands out in his memory is one versus Totton and Eling; 4-1 down at half-time we fought back and won the game 5-4! It’s a game of two halves as they say. Dougie has played with many players throughout his career, the one who he rates the highest is Dean Blake. Best known as a shot stopper Luke remembers when he scored. A goal at Cams in a 2-2 draw against Hamble entitling him to belong to the “Keepers who have scored” club. Obviously in any player’s career there are games they’d rather forget. Ask Dougie his and his answer will be the 6-0 thrashing by Sholing. A day he’d rather forget! Dougie’s career has ended too soon but we all have memories of his performances which will stick in our minds. Mine will be the penalty shootout at the end of the cup game against US Portsmouth, not only for his outstanding performance but his attitude. His banter with the opposing keeper showed football at its finest. Manager Pete Stiles has nothing but praise for Luke. He says that “Luke is the last player to still be at Cams who was there at the start of my time as manager. He’s been a fantastic servant to the club and it’s disappointing that he’s had to hang up his gloves. He’ll be missed on the pitch but he will still be around the club in his role as goalkeeping coach.” Best wishes from all at Cams for the future.

Greg King joined the Centurions club yesterday with his 100th appearance for Brockenhurst, well done Greg.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 13

IT’S NOT WHERE YOU START IT’S WHERE YOU FINISH

The above, from a Broadway Musical of many years ago, is probably more relevant to athletics than football, but can be adapted to a League Programme in the sense that points on the board early on can lead to greater things at the season’s end or be something of a life saver if things go wrong – finance, personnel, commitment (or otherwise) of players – many things can change the course of a season. So, with the current season nearly two months old, and accepting that Cup Competitions reduce the number of League matches in these early stages, a look at the Premier Division of Leagues at the same level as us and the Clubs that have not started too well and have some catching up to do.

Combined Counties Banstead 1 from 7 Eastern Counties Thetford Town 1 from 10 Essex Senior Sawbridgeworth Town 0 from 7 Total points from Hellenic Brimscombe & Thrupp 3 from 8 games are as at the Midland Boldmere St Michaels 2 from 6 completion of fixtures North West Counties Litherland REMYCA 3 from 7

Northern Counties East Athersley Recreation 3 from 7 on September 25th Northern League Thornaby 4 from 7 Southern Combination East Preston 2 from 8 Southern Counties East Punjab United 2 from 7 Spartan South Midlands North Greenford United 1 from 6 United Counties Sleaford Town 0 from 7 Western League Wellington 3 from 7

For those whose geography is on par with that of the writer, Boldmere St Michaels play in Sutton Coldfield. Litherland is in the Sefton district of Liverpool and the Club name came about because of links to both Rem Social Club and Bootle YMCA. Athersley is in Barnsley whilst Punjab United play in Gravesend. The object of this exercise is NOT IN ANY WAY TO BELITTLE the above Clubs. Like our own Clubs they will be primarily run by hard working volunteers and those and players alike will be desperately trying to climb their respective Leagues as the season progresses, but as with any Competition someone has to come last or bottom. It is however early days as yet and we will perhaps re-visit this at a later date - since it is not where you start………………. WEEKEND RESULTS

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Mike Robins writes BASHLEY 1-2 SOLENT UNIVERSITY SOMEWHAT of a surprise given the standings at three pm, but the visitors fully deserved their victory.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 13

The writing was perhaps on the wall in the opening exchanges as the first action of the game saw Tam Demunga lift his shot over Bashley keeper Jason Collins, but it also cleared the bar. The Students were on top for the opening quarter of an hour. Bashley’s first chance came on ten minutes when Conor Whiteley saw his shot hit the crossbar and scrambled to safety by the visitors. The Forest side gradually got into the game with Harry McGrath and Harry Bunce both creating opportunities to break the deadlock. However the opener came from the visitors. On 22 minutes Tam DEMUNGA made the most of a poor pass from debutant Morgan Browning; bringing the ball down and planting it beyond Collins to make it 0-1. Bashley tried to get back into the game, but they let themselves down repeatedly with the final ball either failing to reach the intended target or being intercepted. Solent can perhaps count themselves lucky though to come in at the break with the lead, as Alex Londors looked to handle a through ball just outside his area from my viewpoint only to see the hosts’ appeals fall on deaf ears. The final action of the first half saw Bashley left back Jack Smith’s superb shot from distance tipped away for a corner. HT 0-1 Solent came close to doubling their lead on 52 minutes when Demunga spurned a great chance but made up for it barely two minutes later threading the ball through to Jean- Pierre ALEXANDER who chipped the advancing Collins into an empty net to make it 0-2. The game became disjointed and both sides lot their discipline- the hosts moreso and had Whiteley dispatched to the sin bin, it was simply unnecessary for him to react the way he did to a decision. Solent failed to capitalise though on their man advantage, although Brad Morris came close with a stooping header on 65 and Solent’s Alfie Mahon made a great block to stop Whiteley’s shot shortly after the strikers return to the pitch. With time running out Bashley grabbed a consolation goal from the penalty spot that was converted by Lewis ROSS but had nothing more in the tank. The game ended with Smith seeing red for what could have been an elbow on Demunga- I am uncertain though; but if there was a sin bin for supporters then it would have been filled with the home supporters from close to the player entrance for their simply outrageous verbal abuse directed towards the match referee at the decision. FT 1-2

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Highest placed former members , in the National League, sit in 9th sandwiched between Notts County and Barnet. The Spitfires shared the points and two goals with visitors Hartlepool United yesterday. Blackfield & Langley went down 2-0 at basement side Beaconsfield Town in the Southern Premier Division South; and both Gosport Borough and Salisbury collected three points with 2-0 wins- at Harrow Borough and home against Hartley Wintney respectively. Wimborne Town won by the odd goal in three at Cuthbury against Weston-Super-Mare and Poole Town stay a point clear of Chesham United at the top thanks to a 3-1 win at lowly Hendon. In the Southern League Division One South, Sholing went down 2-0 at Willand whilst Winchester City conceded three without reply at home against Cinderford. AFC Totton lost by the odd goal in three in North Devon against Bideford. Finally it was not a good day either for Moneyfields. They went down at the Creek 7-1 against Bristol Manor Farm in the Buildbase FA Trophy Extra Preliminary Round yesterday. A restricted programme for our neighbours in Dorset and Hampshire where the FA’s Inter League cup competition took charge. Dorset’s game was postponed with their opponents from the Mid Sussex league withdrew and find themselves with a 2nd Round visit to Guernsey by the end of November. It wasn’t a good afternoon at Stockbridge as the side went out 5-1 at the hands of…. the Guernsey Priaulx League side, so no chance for bragging rights then. In the Hampshire Premier there was only the one game, and it saw Winchester Castle get their first points on the board winning 3-1 at newcomers Chamberlayne. No change in the top slots in Wiltshire with both Wroughton and Purton winning at home, 5-1 over Melksham and 4-1 over Marlborough respectively. Shrewton shared the points and four goals at Frome Collegians but Corsham closed the gap courtesy of a best of three win at Cricklade. Finally in Dorset, the only top five side to play were Gillingham Town, who hit 5 away from home at Bridport. Wareham and Balti Sports shared four goals and the points at the Purbeck Sports Centre and Dorchester Sports scored four without replay at Shaftesbury Reserves. Hamworthy remain top with maximum points from ten games.

WEEK NINE ROUND UP

A complete League programme with a day free from Cup Competitions and some, on paper, surprise results specially in the Premier Division, which is where we will start, with the first four alphabetically on the fixture list. In the clash between the AFC’s, Stoneham suffered only their second defeat of the season as Portchester notched up a third consecutive victory, winning 3-0 with two goals from Dan Wooden. Leaders Alresford lost their one hundred per cent record as goals from Greg Peel (on his debut) and Connor Duffin gave Horndean the points at Arlebury Park while the next two results featured first wins for the two teams who were bottom of the table at the start of the day. Amesbury Town defeated Hamworthy United 2-1 with skipper Jack Vallis

leading the way with one of the goals – Hamworthy have now not won in five -and Solent University triumphed by the odd goal in three at Bashley, the Foresters third loss in a row. Brockenhurst made it five wins out of six, Will Tickle’s goal giving them the points at Fleet Town. Hard on the home side on the day as they had made a special effort to promote the Club and attracted an attendance approaching two hundred and fifty only for the result to go against them. Hamble Club made it three wins in a row with John McKie scoring twice in their 3-0 win at Bournemouth, who have now lost four of their last five, and there was another two goal man at Lymington where Sam House scored both his side’s goals in the two all draw with Fareham Town. A lone goal from Aiden White gave Cowes Sports only their second win of the season and made it three losses in the last four for Shaftesbury. Portland returned from their Cup exploits to record their first League win, Jamie Beasley scoring both goals against Baffins Milton Rovers, and Tadley won for the first time at home, a best of three goal success over Christchurch. The outcome at the end of the day is that Alresford still top the table with a two point lead over Brockenhurst and Horndean with AFC Portchester now in fourth place, while Solent and Fleet Town occupy the bottom two places. The fixtures in Division One paired first against second and third against fourth and in both cases the highest placed side came out on top. Hythe & Dibden came from a goal down to defeat US Portsmouth, Mig Dark scoring one of the goals against his old Club, but it was a far more clear cut scoreline at Wick Lane where Downton scores four times without reply against Newport, their sixth win of the season with Tom Moseley leading the way with two goals. Bemerton Heath were the highest scorers of the day, and of the season to date, beating Andover New Street 9-1 at Western Way. The visitors were reduced to ten men inside the opening ten minutes and both Eddie Perrett and Justin Bennett finished with three goals to their name. Bennett has now scored twenty two goals this season, more than a number of Clubs in the Division, proving just how valuable a proven goalscorer can be. A couple of miles down the road Chae Sykes claimed both goals in Laverstock & Ford’s 2-0 win over Fawley AFC and Petersfield defeated New Milton, who are still seeking their first win, by the same margin at Love Lane. Alton made it five wins in five games with a 3-2 success at Verwood to maintain pressure on the leaders and Totton & Eling gained three more 3-1 at Andover Town where Josh Bertie scored twice in front of the Division’s largest attendance of the day. More goals in the final two games with wins for Romsey Town and Whitchurch United. The former scored seven without reply at Pewsey Vale – Indrit Elezi taking the individual scoring prize on the day with four- and the Wiltshire side have now conceded 13 in their last two games. At Longmeadow Ringwood, without a win in five, were two up at the break but events went very much in the home side’s way after the break as they scored six without any reply with Ryan Long claiming two. The last time Whitchurch scored six in a League fixture was in 2016 – they actually scored seven – when a certain Leroy Plummer, now scoring goals at a much higher level, scored twice. Pictured left we see League President Dennis Challis presenting the August Club of the Month Award for Division Ione to Terry Cox, Manager and Dave Macklin his Assistant at Hythe & Dibden yesterday, however despite their victory they lost top spot to Downton on goal difference on the day with both Alton and US Portsmouth just a point adrift, while East Cowes Vics and Pewsey are in danger of losing touch at the bottom of the table. Many thanks to all for the attendances and goalscorers. Sunday, 29 September 2019 Page 22 of 22
