The Hall of Honor and the Move to Tier One Athletics By Debbie Z. Harwell rom its earliest days, the University of Houston rose to Fthe top in athletics—not in football or basketball as you might expect, but in ice hockey. The team competed for the first time in 1934 against Rice Institute in the Polar Wave Ice Rink on McGowan Street. It went undefeated for the season, scoring three goals to every one for its opponents. The next year, only one player returned, but the yearbook reported that they “represented a fighting bunch of puck- pushers.” They must have been because the team had no reserves and played entire games without a break.1 The sports picture changed dramatically in 1946 when the University joined the Lone Star Conference (LSC) and named Harry H. Fouke as athletic director. He added coaches in men’s tennis, golf, track, football, and basketball, and a new director of women’s athletics focused on physical education. Although the golf team took second in confer- The 1934 Houston Junior College ice hockey team, left to right: Nelson ence play and the tennis team ranked fourth, basketball was Hinton, Bob Swor, Lawrence Sauer, Donald Aitken (goalie), Ed the sport that electrified the Cougar fans. CARDWELL* The 1990s was a decade in which new sports facilities of every type and description were built throughout the United States and Canada. Not since the 1960s when baseball began its major expansion has there been such a boom in new facilities. The decade began with the construc- tion of New Comiskey Park in Chicago in 1991. The following construc- tion boom has continued unabated into the present. What explains this explosion in new design, concepts and construc- tion? It is more than the mere aging of structures (i.e., Wrigley Field is still going strong even though it dates back to 1916). Changes in the economics of the game explain much of the need for new facilities that generate more revenue that can then be retained by the team to pay ever-increasing player salaries. The specifics of the economics of modern professional sports are be- yond the scope of this article. Suffice it to say that the fundamental changes in all major professional sports in the United States resulting from player free agency, increased broadcast revenue, merchandise and other non-game revenue, and the conversion from family to corporate ownership of teams has made the financial bottom line just as important as the team's place in the standings.

Sure, the old championship polls were bogus -- but the current system is just as bogus, and it doesn't even give fans anything to argue about. By: Allen Barra Nov. 29, 2001 | Everyone, I guess, assumes that the way things were when they were growing up is the norm, the way things ought to be. I'm that way, too, at least about college football. To many of my friends in the Northeast, college football means the Yale-Harvard game or Princeton–Cornell, or the game they turn on before dinner is ready on Thanksgiving. For people in the West, it's Cal-Stanford or USC-UCLA, or again, whatever precedes the turkey. If they watch the college championship on or near Jan. 2, it isn't because they have followed the teams all season or even know who is playing; they simply regard it as the less professional version of the Super Bowl. In the world they grew up in, college football is a mere appendage to the pro game, one that has a bit of snob appeal because it's played on college campuses (though this has lessened over the last couple of decades as some kind of college education has become accessible to nearly everyone).
