A quick look at the Table of Contents on the previous page will give you their names. I met all but one of them at a seminar I attended in Atlanta early in 2001. It was presented by John Harricharan, and it featured a number of well-known Internet personalities as well as some people that I confess I hadn’t heard of before attending. A year earlier, I had written a book titled Command More Luck (see excerpt at the end of this eBook), but didn’t feel it was “complete” somehow. So I was casting around for ideas to help me round out the project and begin selling it properly. I don’t usually enjoy seminars, and I mostly try to avoid them. I had just read John’s book Power Pause, however, and had spent two or three days walking around the house mumbling “I wish I’d said that.” Then, I heard he was promoting a seminar in my old home town, Atlanta, and something in me knew I needed to attend this one. I did attend, and things began changing. On the first day, during one of the breaks between speakers, I turned to Yanik Silver, whose book Instant Internet Profits had been a great help in understanding how to plan website sales flow. After introductions, I totally surprised myself by asking if he would consider contributing a section to my book. I am enormously indebted to Yanik for his gracious agreement. If he had shot me down, this book might have died right there. Over the next three days, I approached several others about the project, and in every single case was greeted with enthusiasm and acceptance. So I dedicate this book to my fifteen new and very special friends, with the understanding that this book is really theirs. And to John and Yanik, I owe you special thanks for your roles in supporting my very first tentative steps in launching this project. Charles Burke Shirahama, Japan September 15, 2001 I N S I D E T H E M I N D S O F W I N N E R S 6 Chapter 1 Charles Burke http://www.moreluck.com and http://www.inside-the-minds-of-winners.com ello. I’m Charles Burke, the editor of this book, and author of Command More Luck, the first volume in this series. If you’ve glanced at the publisher’s page, you may already Hknow that I live in Japan. I moved here in May of 1985 and liked it so much I decided to stay here a while. Through a lucky break, I was introduced to a small, well-connected design company who just happened to need a copywriter. I had been writing for my own enjoyment, strictly as a hobby, for years, but never professionally. The advertising people liked my first efforts, however, and within a year I was writing catalogs for Toshiba, Isuzu and other well-known accounts. Back in the States, I’d never had much luck with my career moves, so that was heady stuff, sitting in on business meetings at companies that are famous the world over. After a couple of years of this, it gradually dawned on me that my luck was turning. What was I doing differently now? What had changed me? Or more to the point, what had I changed? Most of that material is covered in Command More Luck, my first book, so I won’t repeat it here. I will say, however, that I’ve remained fascinated with the elements of good fortune and what makes certain people luckier than others. Then early in 2001, I attended John Harricharan’s seminar in Atlanta, and I was suddenly in the same room with people I’d come to respect and admire after reading their books and following their progress on the Internet. Without any advance planning, I shocked myself by asking several of them if they would share some of their wisdom with my readers. Every one of them said yes, they’d be delighted to do so. I think that speaks volumes about the kind of people they are. These are incredibly busy folks who, in some cases, plan their time weeks and months in advance. And yet they made the time to sit and talk candidly about their own careers, their beliefs, and their luck. As I describe on the next page, most of them don’t actually believe in luck. So you’re in for a treat as you read this collection of conversations with people who are so very successful in their lives and in their careers, despite (or because of) this lack of belief. I N S I D E T H E M I N D S O F W I N N E R S 7 The Luckiest Folks Just Don’t Believe In It What You’re Getting & How You Can Use It By Charles Burke his book is cram packed with the words of some very smart, very successful people talking about the things they do to manage their own thinking, their own emotions, their Town lives.

Word & World 2/2 (1982) Copyright © 1982 by Word & World, Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN. All rights reserved. page 137 The Kingdom of God in the United States C. CARLYLE HAALAND Wagner College, Staten Island, New York I. RETROSPECT In 1937 H. Richard Niebuhr published his The Kingdom of God in America, a work that broke like a thunderclap on the American scene. In it Niebuhr appeared to depart from the view explanatory of the dynamics of religion in the United States previously set forth in his notable and widely received The Social Sources of Denominationalism. To the consternation of those of more socio-economic-political interpretive persuasion, and to the approbation of those inclined to favor the power of ideas, Niebuhr came to argue that it was not just the empirical conditions of human life but also (and especially) key ideas persisting down through the course of time that shaped the religious situation. Further, the idea that possessed the most significant trailing power, Niebuhr contended, was the Biblical motif—the Kingdom of God.1 One may argue that Niebuhr drew too sharp a distinction between the empirical and the ideational in explaining how the religious fabric of the nation was woven. But surely, as an excellent social analyst, he knew that both aspects offered valuable insight into religious belief and behavior. What he wished to accomplish, therefore, was to sensitize the public to a lost element in respect to clarifying the power of religion in the life of the nation. One may argue further that the particular lost element that he seized upon—the Kingdom of God—was merely an influence of the early Neo-Orthodox movement resonating in an arena of inquiry in which it had no business to be.

Bulletin, contact: [email protected] Bariatric Bulletin, Bariatric Patients Should Take Supplements For Eye Protection Obese patients who have undergone bariatric surgery to shed weight should take the supplements prescribed to them to protect their eyes. Taking in too little Vitamin A, in particular, could in some cases actually cause night blindness, dry eyes, corneal ulcers, and in extreme cases total blindness. This advice comes from Rui Azevedo Guerreiro and Rui Ribeiro of the Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Central in Portugal, who reviewed what little research there currently is on the occurrence of eye conditions following bariatric surgery. The review is published in Springer's journal Obesity Surgery. Three different types of bariatric surgery are performed to help with weight loss in obese patients: restrictive (such as adjustable gastric banding and gastric sleeve), malabsorptive, and mixed procedures (including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion) that combine the first two types of surgeries. One of the drawbacks of these operations is that patients can develop nutrient deficiencies. This happens, for example, when patients vomit more often, eat less or develop food intolerances. People who have had restrictive bariatric surgery, for instance, often follow an unbalanced diet which subsequently influences their intake of the correct combination of vitamins and micronutrients.

  • Spirit Speaks January February 2013 Volume 10 Issue 1
Spirit Speaks January February 2013 Volume 10 Issue 1 Let There Be Peace On Earth Honoring Presence. Nurturing Spirit. Enriching the lives of all we serve. Dr. Moira’s Message Dear Ones, The fire before which I sit, is burning warm and bright. Its flickering flames dancing through the logs are captivating. The Christmas tree to the left of me with all its magical creatures, birds, icicles and ornaments calls me away into its majesty and mystery! However, I must keep my date with you Dear Hearts, and happily be available to Spirit’s inspiration for us all as we head into the New Year. The wind now dancing playfully up and down and all around the chimney has just applauded my happy task! I loved our Christmas Candlelight Service. Did you? I so enjoyed the delightful treat of your warm company. Were we not thrilled by our children, our musicians, our singers? Were we not moved by “The Universal Child” video, fed by Spirit’s sharing and touched by the communion we entered into together? One mind thought, one heartbeat, throbbing and pulsating in the mind and heart of The One! As you see, the memory lingers bright and warm within me. Thank you for contributing to such wonder and joy. Paul’s words in 1:3-4 Philippians comes to mind now: “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you. You are always in every prayer of mine.” So here we are my friends, on the brink of a New Year. What makes the 1st of January different from any other day of the year, I ask myself; or the end of the year any different from the rest of the year? Perhaps it is the collective consciousness of newness that makes the New Year so special, so promising, so inspiring.
