From Indiana, California, Hawaii, Oklahoma to the place he now calls home, New York, music was always in the forefront of James' life. His musical inspirations come from the sounds of Johnny Cash, Prince, Tupac, Jodeci, and more. Since his emergence in 2013, Ro James has worked with the likes of Miguel and Brenmar. That same year he also released an EP trilogy: Coke, Jack & Cadillacs, which received critical praise from outlets such as The FADER, The Source, VIBE, and HypeTrak. Noisey calls his music, "a subtle blend of smoothed out, soulful R&B..." and Billboard declares "James' sound is reminiscent of the greats, think Prince meets D'Angelo..." Combining these influences with his journey, he has crafted his best work to date on ELDORADO. With Ro's soulful grit, impassioned vocals and clear vision as an artist, he is poised to be music's next big breakout star. Running head: SEXISM ACROSS MUSICAL GENRES 1 Sexism Across Musical Genres: A Comparison Sarah E. Neff Western Michigan University SEXISM ACROSS MUSICAL GENRES 2 Abstract Music is a part of daily life for most people, leading the messages within music to permeate people’s consciousness. This is concerning when the messages in music follow discriminatory themes such as sexism or racism. Sexism in music is becoming well documented, but some genres are scrutinized more heavily than others. Rap and hip-hop get much more attention in popular media for being sexist than do genres such as country and rock. My goal was to show whether or not genres such as country and rock are as sexist as rap and hip-hop. In this project, I analyze the top ten songs of 2013 from six genres looking for five themes of sexism. The six genres used are rap, hip-hop, country, rock, alternative, and dance.

ENS Maxwell Johnson JRCOSTEP Summer 2017 Illinois State University Rhinelander District Office Rhinelander, Wisconsin My name is Maxwell Johnson and I am a student at Illinois State University (ISU). I will be continuing my senior year this fall and I plan to graduate next May with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health. One of the fundamental requirements of the environmental health program at ISU is to complete a nine-week externship with an approved organization. My aim from the start was to find an externship that would provide a mix of both autonomy and mentorship that would promote collaborative growth and independent function as an EH professional. Fortunately, the Director of ISU’s Environmental Health program, CAPT George Byrns, USPHS (Ret), introduced me to Indian Health Service (IHS). He is a large reason why I switched from almost a decade in medicine to studying environmental health, so when he spoke passionately about the IHS and USPHS opportunities I listened intently. It was no more than a week or two later that I was already working on my application packet for the JRCOSTEP. After a relatively short period of time I was informed I would be stationed in Rhinelander, WI with the Rhinelander District Office (RDO). I had never been north of Tomahawk, WI so I was very pleased to see that the beauty of the Northwoods only became more pronounced the further north I went. The RDO is within the Bemidji Area IHS that covers all tribes throughout Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. I was fortunate enough to work under the guidance of Barry Hugo, CDR William Crump, and alongside two new hires named Jeremy Blankenship and last year’s JRCOSTEP, Garret Steiner.

  • Ryan Witherspoon, Better Known As the Mononym Ryan, Has a Strong Pedigree in the Music Industry from the Studio to the Streets
Ryan. Ryan Witherspoon, better known as the mononym Ryan, has a strong pedigree in the music industry from the studio to the streets. As he readies his debut EP Games We Play, the Brooklyn wunderkind is geared to change the game, bringing real artistry back to music. Born in East New York, Ryan spent his childhood in Brooklyn’s gritty Cypress Projects, dodging the streets as best as he could. “I say it was R&B,” he explains, “rough and blessed.” His mother was a singer, almost signed by Quincy Jones, but she opted to attend Brown University and study Medicine instead. She later became a teacher to have more time to focus on raising her son, but still kept the music alive within him. At six years old, his mom even took him to Usher’s 8701 Evolution Tour. “It was the coolest experience ever,” he recalls. “Ever since I was a kid, I would watch music videos in the house, trying to dance like Usher.” The streets called, but Ryan didn’t answer. “My mom put me in sports to keep me off the streets,” he remembers. “But most of my friends were in the streets, so it was hard seeing some of them die out there.” All throughout school, Ryan was a triple threat in sports, playing basketball, baseball and football. ESPN even featured him as one of the top ten athletes in New York City. Music was still always present, as he would listen to his mom’s favorites like Mary J. Blige, Michael Jackson, Jodeci, and Usher, while tempering them with New York City street rap.
