RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Andy Lopez was born in Los Angeles on November 30, 1953, grew up in San Pedro, attended the Boys and Girls Club of San Pedro, and graduated from San Pedro High School in 1971; and WHEREAS, upon graduation from San Pedro High School, Andy Lopez went on to Harbor College, then became Captain of the 1975 UCLA Bruins Baseball team, and was drafted in the 9th round by the Detroit Tigers in the 1975 Major League Baseball draft; and WHEREAS, following the end of his collegiate baseball career Andy Lopez became a baseball coach at Mira Costa High School, head coach of the Cal State Dominguez Hills from 1983- 1988, head coach of the Pepperdine University from 1989-1994, head coach of the University of Florida from 1995-2001, head coach of the University of Arizona baseball team from 2002 to the present day; and WHEREAS, as a head coach Andy Lopez has a coaching record of 1089-664-7, with a .621 lifetime winning percentage, and has coached teams that won West Coast Conference Championships in 1989, 1991, 1992, and 1993, two SEC championships in 1996 and 1998, the 2012 Pac-12 Conference title, and made five NCAA Tournament appearances; and WHEREAS, as a head coach Andy Lopez has won two NCAA National Championships, in 1992 and 2012, and to date is one of ten active coaches to have won a national title, one of three coaches to lead three different teams to the College World Series, and one of only two coaches to win national titles at two different universities; and WHEREAS, Andy Lopez has been recognized as Coach ofthe Year by the CCAA in 1985, 1986, and 1987, WCC Coach of the Year in 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, SEC Coach of the Year in 1996, Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2012, and National Coach of the Year in 1992, 1996, and 2012;and WHEREAS, the San Pedro Sportswalk was established in 1978 by Councilman JohnS. Gibson in San Pedro to commemorate outstanding collegiate, Olympic and professional athletes, and the Sportswalk to the Waterfront committee presents awards each year in October; and WHEREAS, this year Andy Lopez will be honored for the second time by the San Pedro Sportswalk in commemoration of his second national championship; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by adoption of this resolution the Los Angeles City Council, along with the Mayor, City Attorney and City Controller congratulates Andy Lopez for leading the University of Arizona Wildcats to the 2012 NCAA Baseball Nation hampionship.
