$ADOPTED S£P1 2 7.\L\2$ RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Andy Lopez was born in Los Angeles on November 30, 1953, grew up in San Pedro, attended the Boys and Girls Club of San Pedro, and graduated from San Pedro High School in 1971; and WHEREAS, upon graduation from San Pedro High School, Andy Lopez went on to Harbor College, then became Captain of the 1975 UCLA Bruins Baseball team, and was drafted in the 9th round by the Detroit Tigers in the 1975 Major League Baseball draft; and WHEREAS, following the end of his collegiate baseball career Andy Lopez became a baseball coach at Mira Costa High School, head coach of the Cal State Dominguez Hills from 1983- 1988, head coach of the Pepperdine University from 1989-1994, head coach of the University of Florida from 1995-2001, head coach of the University of Arizona baseball team from 2002 to the present day; and WHEREAS, as a head coach Andy Lopez has a coaching record of 1089-664-7, with a .621 lifetime winning percentage, and has coached teams that won West Coast Conference Championships in 1989, 1991, 1992, and 1993, two SEC championships in 1996 and 1998, the 2012 Pac-12 Conference title, and made five NCAA Tournament appearances; and WHEREAS, as a head coach Andy Lopez has won two NCAA National Championships, in 1992 and 2012, and to date is one of ten active coaches to have won a national title, one of three coaches to lead three different teams to the College World Series, and one of only two coaches to win national titles at two different universities; and WHEREAS, Andy Lopez has been recognized as Coach ofthe Year by the CCAA in 1985, 1986, and 1987, WCC Coach of the Year in 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, SEC Coach of the Year in 1996, Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2012, and National Coach of the Year in 1992, 1996, and 2012;and WHEREAS, the San Pedro Sportswalk was established in 1978 by Councilman JohnS. Gibson in San Pedro to commemorate outstanding collegiate, Olympic and professional athletes, and the Sportswalk to the Waterfront committee presents awards each year in October; and WHEREAS, this year Andy Lopez will be honored for the second time by the San Pedro Sportswalk in commemoration of his second national championship; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by adoption of this resolution the Los Angeles City Council, along with the Mayor, City Attorney and City Controller congratulates Andy Lopez for leading the University of Arizona Wildcats to the 2012 NCAA Baseball Nation hampionship. The UCLA baseball program has sent eight players to play for the USA Baseball National Team a total of 10 times, beginning with the selection of Shane Mack in 1984. Most recently, former UCLA shortstop Brandon Crawford helped the U.S. National Team capture its second consecutive FISU (International University Sports Federation) World Championship in the summer of 2006. Crawford’s selection in 2006 marked the first time a Bruin had been named since Karp, a right-handed pitcher, competed for the national team in 2000. The 2006 U.S. National Team finished its summer campaign with a 28-2-1 mark and successfullyl defended its gold medal won in the 2004 FISU Tournament in Taiwan. UCLA’s student-athletes have not been the only individuals affiliated with the U.S. National Team. While working as an assistant coach at USC in the summer of 2000, current UCLA head coach John Savage served as an assistant to Mike Gillespie for the U.S. National Team of collegiate all-stars. Administrator Biographies Dr. Gene Block Key Athletic Chancellor • Stanford ’70 • 4th Year Department Staff Dr. Gene Block became chancellor of UCLA in summer 2007, taking the helm of a world-class institution comprising 37,000 students and 27,000 faculty and staff, with an annual budget of $3.6 billion. As chief executive officer, he oversees all aspects of the university’s three-part mission of education, research and service. Previously, Dr. Block served as vice president and provost of the University of Virginia, where he also held the Alumni Council Thomas Jefferson Professorship in Biology. With academic expertise in biological clocks, he conducts research on the neurobiol- ogy of circadian rhythms in higher organisms, leading a research lab funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). From 1991 to 2002, he directed the National Science Foundation’s Science and Technology Center for Biological Timing. In 1997, he was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has invented a number of devices and holds a patent for a non-contact respiratory monitor for the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Dr. Block joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1978 as an assistant professor of biology. He served as vice provost for research from 1993 to 1998 and then as vice president for research and public service until his appointment as vice president and provost in 2001. He also headed an NIH graduate Don Morrison training program aimed at increasing the number of scientists from underrepresented groups. In 1998, he received the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Outstand- Faculty Athletic Rep ing Public Service Award for his work with Virginia’s business community.
