Los Angeles has seven local network affiliates or independent television stations. Fox Sports Net, which features the baseball team in its weekly Lexus Gauntlet show, televises several UCLA baseball games each spring, both at home and on the road.

THE BEST ARE OUT WEST College baseball’s national champion has originated from the West Coast each of the last three seasons. The southern area boasts among the most competitive collegiate baseball environments and provides intense rivalries. Most seasons, crosstown rivals UCLA and USC square off before a nationally-televised audience on Fox Sports West. Locally, the Bruins also face prominent programs such as Cal State Fullerton, Pepperdine, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, San Diego, San Diego State and UC Riverside.

Jack and Rhodine Gifford UCLA is forever grateful to Jack and Rhodine Gifford for their generosity and friendship. Jack passed away on Jan. 11, 2009, and will be best remembered for his unwavering enthusiasm and support of the UCLA baseball program.

The UCLA baseball program completed construction of the Jack and Rhodine Gifford Hitting Facility during the offseason. The 10,500-square foot state-of-the-art hitting and practice complex was generously funded by the late Jack Gifford and his wife, Rhodine. Jack played baseball at UCLA in the early 1960s before graduating in 1963. The Bruins’ new hitting complex is located located behind the outfield fence, extending from the right-field foul pole toward the scoreboard in center field. Construction began on the facility in the second week of December 2008, and the project was completed by the first week of Feburary. The Gifford Hitting Facility stands 23-feet high, 70-feet wide and 150-feet long. The practice complex features an adjustable interior design, accommodating as many as five hitting cages at once. The facility houses a spacious tee area and moving nets that allow for ample space for defensive drills. The facility allows natural light and also features interior lighting. The floor consists of high-quality synthetic turf. In all the hitting facility allows for two 30-x-70-foot cages and three 20-x-60-foot cages, all which feature retractable netting. “We are very thankful to Jack and Rhodine for their vision with this state-of-the-art hitting facility,” head coach John Savage said. “This brings a new dimension of player development to our program. Our players and coaches are very excited about having a new training facility, one that is among the nicest in the country. The Jack and Rhodine Gifford Hitting Facility is a special place for all Bruin players.”

2009 SEASON OUTLOOK Balanced UCLA Ballclub Looks to Challenge for Pac-10 Crown Veteran pitching presence to guide the way as Bruin baseball aspires to reach new heights

UCLA enters the season with a talented nucleus of seniors and juniors, a veteran group which has helped lead the Bruins to three consecutive NCAA postseason appearances for the first time in program history. Complemented by a supporting cast of sophomores looking to push for playing time and freshmen seeking to make an immediate impact, UCLA intends to elevate its program in 2009. A group of five seniors, anchored by redshirt senior left-hander Brendan Lafferty, has led UCLA to three NCAA Regional berths and one NCAA Super Regional appearance (2007) the past three seasons. A core group of 10 juniors – led by starting Gavin Brooks and Charles Brewer and power hitters Gabe Cohen and Casey Haerther – will be instrumental to UCLA’s success in 2009. UCLA’s balanced team continues with its sophomore class, a group of players that did not see significant playing time on the Bruins’ veteran-laden 2008 squad. Several young arms, including Matt Grace, Dan Klein and Rob Rasmussen, will be expected to contribute heavily this spring, while position players such as Raul Duran, Niko Gallego, Chris Giovinazzo and Brett Krill should compete for playing time and starting spots. In addition, a solid group of nine newcomers – eight freshmen Gavin Gerrit Charles Brendan and one four-year college transfer – enters its first season in Westwood.
