Egidio and Paola are the two owners and farmers. They take care of the land, the vineyard and the fruit-trees, all alone. We help them, observing and studying each movement. Give them new life, new vitality, new expression. Give rise to a renaissance of the Roman Castles. In the wine-house, in Genzano, it is only spontaneous fermentation. No enologist or long experience yet with clear ideas and the will to make an expressive, natural, popolar, anti- elite wine for the people. It currently accounts for I55% of the world’s vine-growing areas, 60% of wine production and 70% of exports. In this very special sector of agriculture, technology and science play fundamental roles in all phases of activity, from the start of the vine-growing season, through the ripening of the grapes, to the bottling of the wine. The quality of the wine produced depends on many parameters, including the soil characteristics in the area, the weather and growth conditions during the season, the ability to monitor and control vine diseases, the degree of maturity of the grapes at harvest time, their grade, colour, organic acids, etc. during fermentation and, finally, the wine production techniques employed. In general, however, European vineyard managers still have little access to technical means or reliable systems to guide them in their decision-making. Precision Farming in the Frascati area Space technologies, particularly those associated with Earth Observation (EO), can help the wine-growing community in a number of technical areas. One of several initiatives promoting the use of EO in the wine sector has been ‘Bacchus’, a Research and ESA/ESRIN lies in the middle of the Frascati DOC wine-growing Technological Development project started in 2003 (to be completed in 2005), funded by region, southeast of Rome. -

CLAUDIA CIPOLLONE LA TOPOGRAFIA FISICA DELLA CAMPANIA (1798) DI SCIPIONE BREISLAK: LA STORIA DELLA TERRA E LA TEORIA DEI VULCANI «Something deep in our tradition requires, for intelligibility itself, both the arrow of historical uniqueness and the cycle of timeless immanence – and nature says yes to both» (Gould, 1987, p. 200). Freccia e ciclo, fuoco e acqua nella storia della Terra. – Per quasi un secolo, tra la metà del Settecento e la prima metà dell’Ottocento, l’osservazione delle colonne del «Tempio di Serapide» a Pozzuoli perforate dai mitili, fenomeno che documenta le oscillazioni del livello marino, contribuisce in modo progressivo ad orientare il dibattito scientifico verso una concezione dinamica del globo terrestre. Si trattava di una teoria, è stato recentemente osservato, che avrebbe costituito il presupposto per estendere il concetto di storicità a tutta la realtà fisica e naturale (Ciancio, 2009, pp. 7, 9). Entro tale contesto, e partendo dalle medesime osservazioni, si colloca, sia pure con alcune incertezze e contraddizioni che peraltro sono proprie dei tempi, l’opera che qui presentiamo dello scolopio Scipione Breislak, geologo e naturalista1, allievo al Collegio 1 Di famiglia italo-svedese Breislak nacque a Roma il 16 agosto 1750. Scolopio dal 1765, a partire dal 1773 insegnò in diversi collegi dell’Ordine dei Chierici Regolari delle Scuole Pie (Albano, Ragusa in Dalmazia, Urbino, Roma, Nola). Nel 1788 ricevette l’incarico di professore di fisica presso l’Accademia militare della Nunziatella di Napoli e venne nominato direttore della fabbrica di allume della Solfatara di Pozzuoli. Nel 1798 aderì alla Repubblica romana (Commissario nel Dipartimento del Trasimeno, Ministro delle Finanze). -

In the vein- like body of apparently unaltered gehlenite, the textural relations of the associated minerals (interstitial granditic garnet and, locally, monticellite, rare cases of exsolution of magnetite in the core zone of melilite grains) suggest that the original composi- tion of the gehlenite may have been different, richer in Si, Mg, Fe (and perhaps Na), in accordance with the fact that skarns are the only terrestrial type of occurrence of gehlenite-dominant melilite. The same minerals, monticellite and a granditic garnet, appear in the retrograde evolution of the Mg-rich gehlenite toward compositions richer in Al, the successive stages of which are clearly displayed, along with the final transformation to vesuvianite. -

Die Verbindung hat die gleiche Struktur wie die iibrigen, natiirlich vorkommenden Melilithe. Die Aluminium- und Siliciumatome sind in der Struktur geordnet, die Calcium- und Natrium- atome statistisch verteilt. Abstract The crystal structure of synthetic soda melilite was refined to R = 5.10/0 from three-dimensional diffractometer data. Soda melilite is isostructural with the other naturally-occuring melilites. Aluminum and Si atoms are ordered in the structure while Ca and N a atoms are disordered. 1. Introduction The literature on the melilite group of minerals with a discussion of the various proposed end-members was reviewed by CHRISTIE (1961 a and b; 1962). After prolonged discussion it is now generally accepted that CaNaAlSi207, called soda melilite, can be established as an end member, partly represented in some natural melilites. YODER (1964) showed that pure soda melilite is stable only at pressures in excess of 4 kbar. Its optical properties were determined by SCHAIRER, YODER and TILLEY (1965). The crystal-structure determination of soda melilite was under- taken as a part of a systematic structural study of the melilite group. The general composition of a melilite can be written as (Ca,Na)2 (Mg,Al)(Al,Si)207. Order-disorder of Mg,Al and Si among the tetra- hedral sites and diadochy of Ca, N a etc. -

I viaggi di Rezzonico come percorso di formazione Carlo Castone della Torre di Rezzonico (1742-1795) 1 era figlio dell’erudito Anton Gioseffo, artefice di un’autorevole traduzione di Plinio. 2 Trasferitosi dalla natia Como a Parma con il padre, frattanto separatosi dalla madre, dopo l’elezione, nel 1758, al soglio pontificio di suo cugino Carlo Rezzonico (Clemente XIII) nel 1758 per intercessione di quest’ultimo entrò a far parte della scuola dei paggi di Napoli, città dove rimase fino al 1761 avendo modo di arricchire la sua formazione culturale, e soprattutto la conoscenza del greco. Alla morte del Frugoni, nel 1768, Carlo Castone lo sostituì nell’incarico di segretario perpetuo dell’accademia delle belle arti di Parma. Fortemente influenzato dal Bettinelli e dallo stesso Frugoni nell’ambito della pratica letteraria, le sue teorie estetiche risentono invece dell’influenza del Condillac, a Parma dal 1758 al 1767; esse risultano infatti improntate ad una chiara impostazione sensista. 3 Rezzonico nutriva un interesse non banale anche per le scienze ed in particolare per la storia naturale e la litologia, materia nella quale non mancano osservazioni intelligenti e competenti nei suoi diari di viaggio. Celâl Şengör* İTÜ Avrasya Yerbilimleri Enstitüsü ve Maden Fakültesi, Jeoloji Bölümü, Ayazağa 34469 İstanbul, Turkey ABSTRACT A recent fad in the historiography of geology is to consider the Scottish polymath James Hutton’s Theory of the Earth the last of the “theories of the earth” genre of publications that had begun developing in the seventeenth century and to regard it as something behind the times already in the late eighteenth century and which was subsequently remembered only because some later geologists, particularly Hutton’s countryman Sir Archibald Geikie, found it convenient to represent it as a precursor of the prevailing opinions of the day. By contrast, the available documentation, pub- lished and unpublished, shows that Hutton’s theory was considered as something completely new by his contemporaries, very different from anything that preceded it, whether they agreed with him or not, and that it was widely discussed both in his own country and abroad—from St. Petersburg through Europe to New York. By the end of the third decade in the nineteenth century, many very respectable geologists began seeing in him “the father of modern geology” even before Sir Archibald was born (in 1835). Before long, even popular books on geology and general encyclopedias began spreading the same conviction. A review of the geological literature of the late eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries shows that Hutton was not only remembered, but his ideas were in fact considered part of the current science and discussed accord- ingly. -
