THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF CYPRUS BEING A NATIONAL PROPERTY AT WARTIME AND UNIVERSAL HERITAGE AT PEACE YILDIZ, Netice * KUZEY KIBRIS/NORTH CYPRUS/СЕВЕРНЫЙ КИПР ABSTRACT Cyprus is an island on the crossing roads of Asia, Africa and Europe. From its earliest times several civilisations left a rich culture heritage which is an amalgamation of the Asian, African and European cultures. However, like every other place that experienced war, it was subjected to severe violations in its history during each new sovereign particularly at war time. Sometimes, although the existing ones were reused for economic reasons although they were always altered with the stamp of the identity of the new ruler. Vouni Palace, is one of the early example for this case which is thought to have been built during the Persian rule then turned into a Hellenistic palace. The Crusaders destroyed many Byzantine castles and orthodox churches while the Genoese and later Venetians removed all banners of the Lusignans from the walls of the city. Many Latin buildings were harmed during the bombardment by the Ottoman or demolished by the occupants in need of stone to reinforce the walls. However, these buildings were all used by the Ottomans with some alterations for economical reasons while Orthodox were given the privilege to restore their churches. It is an admirable act to see that still these monuments bear the grotesque ornaments in rather good condition while many Ottoman inscriptions on the buildings in the southern part of the island are badly defaced, the marble inscription of the Paphos Castle being an example.

The case of Urban Gorillas Veronika Antoniou, René Carraz, Yiorgos Hadjichristou, Teresa Tourvas Urban Gorillas [email protected] Abstract Urban Gorillas, a Cyprus based NGO, emerged at the aftermath of the 2013 socio- economic crisis where the notion of publicness was deeply shaken. A cross-examination of the public sphere has led the team to coin the term publicscape and identify working methodologies within this context. Urban Gorillas took on the role of a catalyst between underused public spaces and the society’s uneasy relationship with the notion of publicness. The work, spontaneous in nature, temporarily transforms spaces while creating permanent human networks. The recurring temporariness that characterises the actions revokes activism in the social structure, revitalising physical spaces and inspiring an urban culture of participation. It is a great pleasure for the Cyprus Chess Federation to present this Bulletin for the 10 Small European States who have submitted their application and registered to this great event. With the support of FIDE Events Commission, the European Chess Union, Larnaca Mayor, national, regional and local authorities and our team of volunteers, we will try to do our best to make your stay as nice as possible. New College Lanarkshire Erasmus+ Activities 2017/18
The following document was created by Helena Orcel and Mathilde Riviera from ITEC Boisfleury, Grenoble, France as part of their work experience within New College Lanarkshire’s Business Development Team from May to July 2018. New College Lanarkshire Erasmus+ Activities 2017/18 This year the Erasmus program has enabled 324 students from 4 campuses of New College Lanarkshire to have a wonderful experience! 27 groups went to visit six European countries. In Malta, France, Austria, Spain, Italy and finally Cyprus the students were accompanied by 87 fantastic staff. The purpose of this article is to let you learn about each group. Flow 1 - Malta 21 students undertook a two week work placement to Malta, from 24/04/2017 – 14/05/2018. These students study Early Years, in the Care & Science faculty. They were welcomed by host partner, Luxol . The students and staff took part in many activities during their stay. Cyprus and Greece Κύπρος και Ελλάδα April 2018 Molly and Bob Hillery 2 This was our second visit to both Cyprus and Greece, although it had been 14 years since we were last in Cyprus and 22 years since our previous visit to Greece. Consequently, we were not only interested in seeing the sites we had enjoyed previously, as well as perhaps some new ones, but also wondered about each country might have changed in the intervening years. Both had been members of the European Union when we last visited (although, in the case of Cyprus, for only a few months) but neither were using the Euro when we were there. We knew, of course, of the financial problems that Greece has encoun- tered in recent years but knew little of the relative prosperity in Cyprus. So, we were anxious to experience whatever changes might have occurred in both countries but were primarily there to see the history and culture that both have maintained over the centuries—and which, presumably had changed little in the first two decades of the 21st century. In both countries, we chose to stay in just one location, rather than moving from city to city every few days. Cyprus is small enough that we could see eve- rything on the island from our base in Larnaca through the use of a rental car. In Greece, we stayed in the center of Athens and, in addition to visiting ancient sites in that city, we took day trips out on guided bus tours. As with virtually every place we have been in the world, a second visit did not disappoint and we feel that future trips to each country would be equally enjoyable.

Key Facts Language: The majority of Cypriots speak Greek, and a small percentage speaks Turkish. The Greek Cypriot dialect differs from mainland Greece. English, German and French are spoken in tourist areas. Passport/Visa: Travellers, except EEA nationals, should hold an onward or return ticket and documentation necessary for that journey, as well as sufficient funds for the period of intended stay in Cyprus.

GÜNÇE Eastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Architecture, Cyprus ABSTRACT Military establishments, including castles, fortresses, military posts and towers, were mainly constructed for defence purposes. The conservation of military structures as well as other heritage buildings is important since they are monuments that represent a sense of identity, and national pride, bearing a message of oppression. The only way to sustain these monuments is re-functioning with an appropriate approach since they have already lost their original function. However, the problem is to select the most appropriate function according to the structural and formal characteristics of the monuments. The study aims to question the success of the adaptive reuse projects in terms of appropriateness of the museum function and its implementation in castles. Generally, there is a tendency to convert old castles into museums. Due to the physical characteristics, museum can be accepted as a compatible function, if museums are designed with correct approaches. Otherwise, the heritage buildings will lack a living function and become disused or abandoned. The study is a comparative research among castles located in Cyprus and converted to museums. Four castles of the castles in Cyprus that have been converted to museums have been evaluated and compared in terms of the use of military establishments as museums. The selected castles were evaluated in two parts with defined criteria: firstly, in terms of conservation principles and secondly, in terms of museography.
