The normal time allowed for thecompletion of the course is twelve months from the date of enrollment. First of all, despite what LIFE magazinemay say about Allen Ginsberg, the poet is not ofa race apart; he is not a Martian, he is a man, and his experiences are roughly comparableto those of every other man. Other- wise, what he has tosay would be of no conceivable use to us. Second, he is a man speaking; to get his message, we have to listen to him. It is only quite recently that poetry became a written art; before the invention of the printing press, before the invention of writing, poetry existed.
