  • DRAGONLANCE! Actually, the Name of the World Is Krynn
Another world, another adventure. Another reality to explore, a thrilling new … library? A library, complete with the faintly musty smell of old tomes. Long tall stacks of books, scrolls, and tablets run the length of the chamber you find yourself in. Seated at a desk near the back of the chamber is a lone figure. He scratches away with quill and ink on a scroll, pausing only to wet his quill in a small inkpot and look into a crystal globe located to his left. “Astinus of Palanthas, Master of the Library of Palanthas and Historian of Krynn. He keeps a record of everything that happens here. Everything of note, at least. Most people think he’s immortal or some kind of god. No one seems to know for certain, though.” No one? Your Benefactor smiles one of those little smiles you’ve become so familiar with. “Well, maybe not no one. Maybe you’ll figure it out and tell me all about it?” Seemingly bored with that train of thought, your Benefactor turns away from you and runs their hands along the stacks. “So here we are: DRAGONLANCE! Actually, the name of the world is Krynn. Dragonlance is the title given to the intellectual property created, ‘created,’ by Margret Weiss and Tracy Hickman. So, if you’d like to take a minute to read up on what this place is about, now’s the time and here’s the place to do it. Or I can just give you the Chain’s Notes. Get it? Chain’s Notes? It’s like Cliff’s Notes, but … never mind.” “In the beginning was The High God and from the Beyond he called forth Paladine, Gilean and Takhisis, good, neutral and evil gods respectively.

  • The Lost Kenku
THE LOST KENKU Illustrated and Written By Shawn Wood Note from the Author o say this is a loosely constructed adventure may be an exaggeration of some degree. However, some patron saint of children requested a pdf of my adventure notes. So, here we are. I’ve use one version or another of this adventure to introduce people to the D&D experi- ence as it has all the elements of a good game with very little ramp up time needed. The adventure structure is created in such a way to allow for as much or as little combat is desired. Encounters can be changed to suit a lvl1 cam- paign, and with a little imagination I imagine one could have fun altering it for a party in the high teens. Some nice paintings of Ancient Dragons and Neoliths may be in order. Have fun with it. Change, add, or remove monsters, items, and characters as you see fit. A special thanks to the wonderful donors of the Extra Life Charity and the Dungeons and Dragons Team. Together we can manage to do a little bit of good in this mind-flayer-run world. 2 | THE LOST KENKU | A 2017 EXTRA LIFE ADVENTURE Wizard of Weirding Mind Flayer Alhoon The Wizard Weirding is a mind flayer alhoon in dis- guise. It uses disguise self to appear as a male human wizard named Weirding. Long ago, it left the hive in search of power and immortality through magic. • White by Default: an Examination of Race Portrayed by Character Creation Systems in Video Games
White by Default: An Examination of Race Portrayed by Character Creation Systems in Video Games A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In the Department of Sociology of the College of Arts and Sciences By Samuel Oakley B.A. Otterbein University July 2019 Committee Chair: Dr. Littisha A. Bates, PhD Abstract Video games are utilized as a form of escapism by millions, thousands of hours are put in by multiple players every week. However, the opportunity to escape, and free oneself from societal scrutiny and biases like racism is limited within video games. Color-blind development and reaffirmation of gaming as a white male space limits the ability of players with marginalized identities to escape and enjoy games. A sample of character creation focused video games were analyzed to better understand if there was an impact of the White by Default character occurrence on the overall narrative, ludic (gameplay mechanics) and limitations or bonuses that could affect a player’s agency within a video game. This analysis includes The Sims 3 (freeform life simulator), Skyrim (fantasy roleplaying game), XCOM 2 (tactical science fiction), Tyranny (tactical fantasy), and South Park: The Fractured but Whole (science fiction roleplaying game) all of which allow character creations. My findings suggest that character creation did not limit a player’s agency through the usage of race in character creation, but instead offered a chance for players to self-insert or correct negative stereotypes of color-blind racism in the games narrative.
