The series is a sequel to the original Ultimate Spider-Man. Ultimate Comics: The Spider-Man Who Is Miles Morales? (#1-5) Published: September 2011 - December 2011 Creative Team: Brian Michael Bendis /Sarah Picelli/ Justin Pontor Plot Outline: Eleven Months Before the Death of Spider-Man, Norman Osborne creates another spider, believed to be Spider 42. Spider 42 crawls into a Prowler bag as it steals from a safe containing research on the spider. Miles Morales, who is currently being accepted through a lottery to a charter school, goes to visit his uncle Aaron, Prowler. Spider 42, who hid in Aaron's bag comes out, bites Miles, who convulses and loses to the side. Miles runs out, only to discover that he can become invisible. After driving through the streets and learning about his new unusual arachnid abilities, Miles goes to visit his friend Ganka, which suggests that he may be a mutant. Jefferson Davis, Miles' dad, then shows up and takes Miles to the park, where he explains that he doesn't like Miles being around Aaron because he's a thief. Miles later checks his strength, rescuing a young girl from a burning apartment complex. Two months later, when he moves to a charter school, he dreams of Electro in his dorm and kills him as Spider-Man. He then wakes up and heads to the gym, where a teacher reports that Spider-Man has been shot dead on a bridge in queensboro. Miles witnesses the death of Peter Parker and then explains to Ganke that he feels guilty as if he decided to become a hero when he got his powers, it may never have happened. They attend Peter's funeral, where Miles questions Gwen Stacy why Peter became Spider-Man. Subsequently, Ganke gives Miles his Spider-Man costume, which he wore on Halloween, and Miles merges the winner in the fight against the kangaroo. Miles then goes on as Spider-Man only to run into Spider-Man, who takes him into the custody of S.H.I.E.L.D. There Nick Fury reveals that he knows everything about Miles and his family, including his uncle's criminal activities. Meanwhile, Electro escapes from custody, but quickly defeats Miles. S.H.I.E.L.D. releases Miles, and Jessica Drew shows up at school to give him a modified black-and-red version of the Spider- Man costume. • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

600 THE GARDENS REACH OF THE BRISBANE RIVER Kangaroo Point — Past and Present [By NORMAN S. PIXLEY, M.B.E., V.R.D., Kt. O.N., F.R.Hist.S.Q.] (Read at the Society's meeting on 24 June 1965.) INTRODUCTION [This paper, entitied the "Gardens Reach of the Brisbane River," describes the growth of shipping from the inception of Brisbane's first port terminal at South Brisbane, which spread and developed in the Gardens Reach. In dealing briefly wkh a period from 1842 to 1927, it men tions some of the vessels which came here and a number of people who travelled in them. In this year of 1965, we take for granted communications in terms of the Telestar which televises in London an inter view as it takes place in New York. News from the world comes to us several times a day from newspapers, television and radio. A letter posted to London brings a reply in less than a week: we can cable or telephone to London or New York. Now let us return to the many years from 1842 onward before the days of the submarine cable and subsequent inven tion of wireless telegraphy by Signor Marconi, when Bris bane's sole means of communication with the outside world was by way of the sea. Ships under sail carried the mails on the long journeys, often prolonged by bad weather; at best, it was many months before replies to letters or despatches could be expected, or news of the safe arrival of travellers receivd. Ships vanished without trace; news of others which were lost came from survivors.

‘Th ank God for great journalism. Th is book is a much needed, ex- haustively researched and eff ortlessly well written recent history of Ethiopia. A book that strips away the cant and rumour, the pros and antis and thoroughly explains the people, politics and economics of that most beautiful nation. A superb and vital piece of work by some- one who clearly loves the country of which he writes.’ Bob Geldof ‘Th e great Ethiopian famine changed everything and nothing. It fun- damentally altered the rich world’s sense of its responsibility to the hungry and the poor, but didn’t solve anything. A quarter of a century on, we’re still arguing about the roots of the problem, let alone the so- lution, and—though there has been progress—Ethiopia’s food inse- curity gets worse, not better. Peter Gill was one of the most thorough and eff ective television journalists of his generation. He was there in 1984 and his work at the time added up to the most sensible, balanced and comprehensive explanation of what had happened. Twenty-fi ve years later, he’s gone back to test decades of aspiration against the re- alities on the ground. It’s a book that bridges journalism and history, judicious analysis with a strong, and often gripping, narrative. Always readable, but never glib, this is a must for all those who think there is a simple answer to the famine, still waiting in the wings. ’ Michael Buerk ‘No outsider understands Ethiopia better than Peter Gill. He com- bines compassion with a clinical commitment to the truth.

  • Avengers and Its Applicability in the Swedish EFL-Classroom
Master’s Thesis Avenging the Anthropocene Green philosophy of heroes and villains in the motion picture tetralogy The Avengers and its applicability in the Swedish EFL-classroom Author: Jens Vang Supervisor: Anne Holm Examiner: Anna Thyberg Date: Spring 2019 Subject: English Level: Advanced Course code: 4ENÄ2E 2 Abstract This essay investigates the ecological values present in antagonists and protagonists in the narrative revolving the Avengers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The analysis concludes that biocentric ideals primarily are embodied by the main antagonist of the film series, whereas the protagonists mainly represent anthropocentric perspectives. Since there is a continuum between these two ideals some variations were found within the characters themselves, but philosophical conflicts related to the environment were also found within the group of the Avengers. Excerpts from the films of the study can thus be used to discuss and highlight complex ecological issues within the EFL-classroom. Keywords Ecocriticism, anthropocentrism, biocentrism, ecology, environmentalism, film, EFL, upper secondary school, Avengers, Marvel Cinematic Universe Thanks Throughout my studies at the Linneaus University of Vaxjo I have become acquainted with an incalculable number of teachers and peers whom I sincerely wish to thank gratefully.
