Agenda item: (to be completed by Board staff) USF Board of Trustees ( March 7, 2013) Issue: Proposed Ph.D. in Integrative Biology ________________________________________________________________ Proposed action: New Degree Program Approval ________________________________________________________________ Background information: This application for a new Ph.D is driven by a recent reorganization of the Department of Biology. The reorganization began in 2006 and was completed in 2009. The reorganization of the Department of Biology, in part, reflected the enormity of the biological sciences, and in part, different research perspectives and directions taken by the faculty in each of the respective areas of biology. Part of the reorganization was to replace the original Ph.D. in Biology with two new doctoral degrees that better serve the needs of the State and our current graduate students by enabling greater focus of the research performed to earn the Ph.D. The well-established and highly productive faculty attracts students to the Tampa Campus from all over the United States as well as from foreign countries. The resources to support the two Ph.D. programs have already been established in the Department of Biology and are sufficient to support the two new degree programs. The reorganization created two new departments; the Department of Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology (CMMB) and the Department of Integrative Biology (IB). This proposal addresses the creation of a new Ph.D., in Integrative Biology offered by the Department of Integrative Biology (CIP Code 26.1399). The study of leeches from Lake Gusinoe and its adjacent area offered us the possibility to determine species diversity. Asa result, an updated species list of the Gusinoe Hirudinea fauna (Annelida, Clitellata) has been compiled. There are two orders and three families of leeches in the Gusinoe area: order Rhynchobdellida (families Glossiphoniidae and Piscicolidae) and order Arhynchobdellida (family Erpobdellidae). In total, 6 leech species belonging to 6 genera have been identified. Of these, 3 taxa belonging to the family Glossiphoniidae (Alboglossiphonia heteroclita f. papillosa, Hemiclepsis marginata,andHelobdella stagnalis) and representatives of 3 unidentified species (Glossiphonia sp., Piscicola sp., and Erpobdella sp.) have been recorded. The checklist gives a contemporary overview of the species composition of leeches and information on their hosts or substrates. -

In total, the potamic leech fauna of Eastern Siberia includes 12 described species belonging to 10 genera. There has been very few papers on leeches of Batracobdella algira . The aim of the presently reported study was to provide the measurements and, for the first time, description and characteristics of the reproductive and digestive systems of B. algira . The material used in this study was collected from frogs, Rana saharica Boulenger, 1913, in April 1987 by H. Hotz in Béja in Tunisia (11 individuals) and by R. Ben Ahmed in 2008 from the skin of Bufo mauritanicus Schlegel, 1841 in Nabeul in Tunisia (18 individuals). The relative length of the specimens ranges between 1.48 and 4.07. The digestive system of leeches has a standard structure for the species from the family Glossiphoniidae. Male and female gonopores are separated by two annuli. Ovisacs are as long as 5 neurosomits. The characteristic features of the male reproductive system of Batracobdella are sperm ducts, which are twisted in a small area and placed near to atrium. This study will hopefully contribute to a better understanding of the host–parasite relation. Gorb Abstract Amphibians are different from most other tetrapods because they have a biphasic life cycle, with larval forms showing a dramatically different cranial anatomy and feeding strategy compared to adults. Amphibians with their exceptional diversity in habitats, lifestyles and reproductive modes are also excellent models for studying the evolutionary divergence in feeding systems. In the present chapter, we review the literature on amphibian feeding anatomy and function published since 2000. We also present some novel unpublished data on caecilian feeding biome- chanics. This review shows that over the past two decades important new insights in our understanding of amphibian feeding anatomy and function have been made possible, thanks to a better understanding of the phylogenetic relationships between taxa, analyses of development and the use of biomechanical modelling. In terms of functional analyses, important advances involve the temperature-dependent nature of tongue projection mechanisms and the plasticity exhibited by animals when switch- A. The Nevada form was brown and with pigmentation patterns, whereas the Utah form was plain and white. The dorsoventral histological sectioning of these 3 specimens showed the Utah and Nevada forms had compact salivary glands, hitherto noted only in the South American Helobdella and Haementaria species. The pharynx of Nevada individuals was S-shaped, and in the Utah form the ejaculatory ducts formed a Gordian knot in the distal-most posterior region, further distinguishing these 2 intermountain Helobdella-isolates. Comparing these two taxa to other published Helobdella internal morphologies, two new species are pro- posed: Helobdella humboldtensis n. sp. from Nevada (size and pigmentation similar to H. cali- fornica) and Helobdella gordiana n. sp. from Utah, which resembles H. stagnalis from Europe. These findings suggest the Intermountain area may be a prime region to study the evolution of members of the Helobdella species complex. -

CLARK* Department of Anatomy, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin, U.S.A. SUMMARY The eye of the rhynchobdellid leech, Helobdella stagnalis, has been examined with the electron microscope. The eye is composed of a cup of pigment cells surrounding a compact mass of photo- receptor cells. In addition to pigment granules, the pigment-cell cytoplasm is characterized by mitochondria, a Golgi complex, and profiles of rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum. The photoreceptor cell contains a microvillous rhabdomere. The microvilli arise from the membrane of a large intracellular vesicle and obliterate much of its lumen. No connexion between the lumen of the intracellular vesicle and the extracellular space has been observed. The plasmalemma of the photoreceptor cell is folded to form thin pleats of cytoplasm which separate adjacent receptor cells from each other. No glial-like cells have been seen in the receptor cell mass. Directly sub- jacent to the microvilli and surrounding the intracellular vesicle is a tortuous and predominantly smooth-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum. A pair of centrioles is found near the rhabdomere. The cytoplasm around the nucleus is characterized by smooth- and rough-surfaced elements of endoplasmic reticulum, many mitochondria, and a Golgi complex. Proximally, the receptor cell narrows to form a nerve fibre which joins those from other cells to form the optic nerve. INTRODUCTION Leech photoreceptor cells aroused the interest of many classical cytologists and among a few of them (Whitman, 1899; Apathy, 1899) provoked a bitter and vitupera- tive controversy about the structure and derivation of this cell type.
