Club Aims The Club encourages walking, skiing and similar outdoor activities, and promotes interest in the preservation of flora, fauna and natural scenery. Joining the Club Persons aged 16 years and over can apply for prospective membership. To become a full member, three qualifying walks and an Essential Skills Day have to be completed within 12 months of joining. For further details visit the Club website or contact the Membership Officer, Geoff O’Hara (03 6272 1225). Risk The Club is a group of people who enjoy bushwalks and similar activities, with trips organised on a voluntary basis by and for Club members. Every trip coordinator is an unpaid volunteer who organises the walk for fellow Club members. They are not paid professionals with commensurate training and responsibility. Thus each trip member is responsible for their own safety, suitability of equipment and personal skills. Members and visitors take part in Club organised activities at their own risk. The Club does not offer qualified first aid. Club activities involve inherent risks and dangers. The published Walk Previews grade the level of difficulty and distance, and may indicate some risks. However, unanticipated and unavoidable hazards can occur which result in serious injury or property loss/damage. For example, weather can be unpredictable and change quickly, tracks become treacherous and accidents can happen. Liability Members acknowledge and agree that in applying to become a member (of whatever grade) or renewing that membership of the Club that the nature of the activities carried out by the Club and by participating voluntarily, freely and at their own risk, are such that it would be unreasonable for the Club or any of its members acting on its behalf to be in any way responsible for any injury, or death, to members or to damage to their property and members hereby, to the full extent permitted by law, waive all of their legal rights of action against and fully release the Club for loss, damage or injury or death or loss or damage to property howsoever arising out of or in relation to member’s participation in the activities conducted by the Club including without limitation, liability for any negligent or tortuous Act or omission or breach of statutory duty on the part of the Club, its office bearers or agents. Insurance and Legal Matters The Club insurance covers public liability, excluding member-to-member events, during Club activities. Members' vehicles are not covered. For further information write to the Secretary on constitutional or legal matters and the Treasurer on insurance matters.

President’s Report At our last meeting we discussed the following Subscriptions 2013/2014 It was agreed to keep the subscriptions the same for the next financial year but we wanted members to be aware that with costs for the printing and postage of the circular continue to increase each year, the subscription for members who want a paper copy of the circular will probably increase the following year.

HWC Office From time to time the HWC Office located in the Conservation Volunteers Australia premises is closed temporarily while CVA staff are on business outside the office. CVA are happy for members to push any mail for the HWC under the door and they will place it in the our mail tray.

Lake Dobson Hut At the end of the year when the trial period for the new hut booking system is finished we will have a review of what has worked and what hasn’t. Storm Foulkes will be in charge of this process. So please write to Storm with your comments. Email : [email protected] . Simon Benham has put his comments in this Circular and they will be reviewed by Storm at the appropriate time.

Kent Lillico Kent has completed the Peakbaggers list. He joins Dave Harris (HWC), Paul Geeves(HWC) and Phil Dawson (NWWC) as being the only people to have done so. The list is 466 peaks all over and includes some mountains in very remote places. Well done Kent , It is a remarkable achievement.

Bumper Stickers Malcolm Sherlock has bumper stickers available free to members – contact him if you would like to have one on your car.

Mid year Lunch is on 17th August.

So far this year we have had 82 new members. JUNE 2013 7

Multi Day Recreational Track TRC Tourism is conducting a survey on behalf of the Wellington Park Management Trust to assist in planning for a multi use trail between Wellington Park and the Snowy Ranges in Tasmania and they have asked our members for their views on this proposal. It would be much appreciated if you could fill in this survey. The questionnaire should take around 10 minutes to complete. All respondents may enter a lottery for a Kathmandu Outdoor Adventure Store shopping voucher valued at $200.

The survey is anonymous and responses will be reported in aggregate. The survey will close at 5.00 pm Australian Eastern Standard Time on the 31 May 2013.

Please contact [email protected] if you have any queries. Please click the link to access the survey questionnaire. http://surveys.questionpro.com/a/t/ACimOZPdO5

Rupert Manners, President

Secretary’s Salsa The state of many of the iconic walking tracks in Tasmania is disgraceful. The over South Cape Range is a sea of mud. The track has become braided because walkers who are unwilling or unable to wade through the mire create new tracks off to the side. Thus the environment around the tracks is degraded. There are many other tracks in a similar state. Toilets are overflowing on the Western Arthurs. The Government should fix the tracks, but the hasn’t got any money to spare. However, the Commonwealth Government does have the ability to spend more money on the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage area and it has a duty to do so. It has a responsibility under the World Heritage Convention to ensure that, as far as possible, appropriate financial measures are taken to protect the world heritage areas in Australia. It is failing in this duty. Government spending on maintaining and improving the walking tracks would be good for employment. Unemployment in Tasmania is the highest in Australia. Spending on tracks would be a good investment – encouraging tourists to visit Tasmania. I urge you to write letters asking the Government to fulfil its responsibilities towards the World Heritage Area; to stimulate employment in Tasmania; and to look after our iconic walking tracks. Write to The Hon Julia Gillard MP Prime Minister Parliament House CANBERRA ACT 2600 It is an election year and you have more chance of getting some attention now than at any time in the next three years. Happy Trails to you! John Street, Secretary 8 JUNE 2013 Membership News New Members The Executive wishes to congratulate the following members who were elected to full HWC Membership on 23 April 2013: Karen Spinks, Caroline Wong, Lois Newham, and James McAlpine Welcome to Prospective Members On behalf of all Club members I welcome the following Prospective Members to the Club: Samantha Elrick, Juanita Westbury, Maraika Smit, Rosina Beaumont, Richard Maclachlan, Donna Maclachlan, Scott Chandler, Joshua Jones, Craig Jones, Ahmet Bektas, and Bettina Cruise Membership Renewal Enclosed with this Circular is your Membership Renewal Form for FY2013-14; your early renewal of membership would be appreciated. Please note the options for return of the form and payment included on the form.

Vale Nancy Weaver The Club respectfully noted the recent passing of Nancy Weaver (nee Shaw) at the age of 103. Nancy was Secretary/Treasurer of Club for best part of a decade after Jack Thwaites relinquished those roles. Nancy helped to pioneer the route to in January 1946 and was the first woman to visit that part of the . Her trip is well documented in the Tasmanian Tramp No.7 with a description of their camp being burnt out and a long trip back over Mt Picton. Lake Shaw, south east of The Dial in the Eastern Arthur Range, is named in her honour. She wrote several articles for the Tasmanian Tramp and prepared the first news-sheet that later became the Club Circular. She then went to Queensland and put an ad in the Courier Mail which resulted in the formation of the Brisbane Bushwalking Club. Condolences to her daughter Helen and family. (John Cannon)

Vale Don Closs Don loved to introduce new members to the thrill(?) of scrambling through some Horizontal (Anodepetalum biglandulosum) in Mt Field National Park. He could rattle off the species name quickly and I am sure it was the only botanical name he could remember. He was a past President of the club and participated in many club projects including Search and Rescue, Tracks, Federation of Tasmanian Bushwalking Clubs as well as being Duplicator Custodian for 14 years without once being late for Circular production. Don with his wife Jeanette once hired a DC3 for a weekend trip to King Island! A trip to Cape Hauy encouraged Don to get the ABC Big Country team out there to film a climb of the Candlestick. I have had the pleasure of travelling with Don and Jeanette on many trips around Tasmania and the mainland, they were great times. His passing is a sad loss to his family and to the Club. (Bob Wyatt)

Geoff O'Hara, Membership Officer

JUNE 2013 9 Search, Rescue and Training Before becoming a full member of the HWC, all prospective members have 12 months from joining the Club to complete three (3) qualifying walks and participate in an essential skills day to get to know the Club. Essential Skills Training Days for the second part of 2013 will be scheduled for dates to be set in September, October and November. Coordinators to be announced

First Aid training in 2013 In 2012 the Club had 19 people attend First Aid training courses. The Executive agreed that each calendar year 10 people would be subsidised up to $100 each if they attended a recognised course run by either St Johns or the Red Cross. If you would like to attend a course in 2013 please contact me and I will organise a date. Although the new course structure has been reduced from two days to one – the same material is still being covered but with less time to practice CPR and bandaging techniques. This is an excellent start to the aim of the Club to get more members trained who can assist in the case of an incident during one of our activities.

Dawn Hendrick – Assistant Secretary

TALKING POINT With regard to the proposition that private bookings be allowed in the Lake Dobson Hut I would like to express the opinion that this concept is contrary to the tradition and spirit of the Hobart Walking Club. The hut was built by and is maintained by voluntary labour, provided by club members. It is not appropriate that private individuals should take advantage of this to use the hut as their private shack. My wife and I have spent many happy hours at the hut over our 18 year membership of the club, and enjoyed the spirit of camaraderie consequent upon the serendipitous meeting with other members of widely varying backgrounds and skills, who happen to be there at the same time. The tradition of bushwalking in Tasmania is that all are welcome on an equal footing at remote huts, and all pitch in together. There are other options for people who wish to have private accommodation e.g. the Government huts just before the car park at Lake Dobson. The excess of expenditure over income from hut fees is less than $1000 per year, representing just over $1 per club member per year. Raising the hut fees modestly could easily redress this. The hut is in an ecologically sensitive area and the composting toilet, and the grey water drainage will not stand heavy usage. The latter drains into the soil to the NE of the hut. If some increase in hut usage is desired, it would be better done by more publicity, and by organising events such as walks, and field trips to study botany, bird life, and geology etc. 10 JUNE 2013 By my reckoning the majority of the Ski and Hut Committee are opposed to the idea of private bookings, and have never recommended it. It would adversely affect the nature of the stay at the hut. Simon Benham.

SAREX 2013 This annual S&R training weekend is being held along the Overland Track on the weekend of 3-4th August. People on the Day Search call-out list should have received email details about the weekend but participation is open to all Club Members. Brief details about the weekend appear below. Please contact Malcolm Sherlock or one of the S&R contacts listed at the back of this Circular if you require more information. SAREX will be a state-wide exercise this year with involvement of police SAR from the north and north-west. Southern Tasmanian involvement in the exercise will again involve a trip to Lake St. Clair and deployment in the field from Cynthia Bay by boat or on foot. The helicopter is involved in the exercise but will be based at the northern end of the park. It is unlikely you will have exposure to it this year. The scenario this year is a treasure hunt. No missing person who never gets found. You will have to practice wide and varied SAR techniques to find clues and hopefully prizes. Exercise Objectives relevant to HWC are to: · Develop liaison links between Tasmania Police, other agencies and volunteer groups. · Practice and develop the practical Search and Rescue skills of Tasmania Police, SES and volunteer personnel. · Assess the capabilities of the SES portable radio network, the National Parks and the Police radio network and mobile phone service along the length of the Overland Track · To test the capabilities of general volunteers in a hostile winter environment.

Circular Production Homes Volunteers are required to assist in preparation of circulars for mailing which is followed by a sociable cuppa with friends. Work starts at 7.30 pm and usually finishes about 9.00 pm. Please bring a small supper contribution. 25 Jun Tue John Francis, 49 Fisher Ave, Sandy Bay. 23 Jul Tue Rob & Toni Hill, 2/44 Jungira St, Howrah. 27 Aug Tue Mary Cuthbertson, 99 Newdegate St, West Hobart. Jim Anderson, Circular Coordinator

JUNE 2013 27 WALK REPORTS Blake's Opening - Mar with Warwick Risby No one brought along hand saws to help clear the track but this did not stop our enthusiastic group of eleven (6 M + 5 F), enjoying the scramble through the fallen trees in the middle section of the walk. It was a hot muggy day never-the-less we were able to spend an enjoyable lunch break sitting on rocks in the to learn of some history of the track, before completing the walk in five hours to finish off with our usual arvo-tea.

Lake Dulverton Walking Track - Mar with Bob Wyatt A shower of rain then strong, cold, gusty wind on this trip did not prevent our group walking the track. We started from the site of the railway station and after inspecting the Night Cart Pans!!!, we had lunch in a sheltered section of Lairmairanepair Park at Freds Point. Coffee at the Brighton Bakery finished off the trip.

Mt Wellington- Apr with Warwick Risby I was a replacement co-ordinator for Duncan who was suffering a painfulviral inflammation. Our group of 14 including a visitor, followed the new Cascade track to Old Farm Road and then a slower progress up Myrtle Gully track to Junction Cabin for lunch. We returned via the Old Farm fire trail before rejoining the Cascade track back to the cars. Everyone was perfectly behaved and we all enjoyed the leg stretch before finishing off with coffee at the Ginger Brown Cafe.

Geryon South & The Acropolis - April with John Street Although we had David Chung's pretty good track notes and Rohan Hutchison's fairly accurate GPS track log, we still managed to lose our way on Geryon South. We charged impetuously up to the saddle between Geryon and the Acropolis before we really thought about where we were going and then wandered over the mountainside until Geoff found the true path. And that was before we got to the exciting stuff. Others have remarked that G South is *technically* easier than Federation and Mt Anne, and that may be * technically* correct; but it is still bloody steep and the last move before the top flummoxed Ali for quite a while (and she was wondering how she was ever going to get down again). What is more, people talk about the SLAB as if that is the only thing that you have to worry about, and that is not the case: there is the vertiginous GULLY, the steep rock SCRAMBLING, the DODGY ROPE tied to a DODGY TREE and then the overhanging CHOCKSTONE. Anyhow, we did get there (and back) in one piece and we did the Acropolis for dessert the next day. PS. the walk is beautiful and within most walkers' capabilities as far as Geryon campsite. PSS I would add to DC's useful tracknotes that there is a bivvy cave on the first traverse that is a good landmark for the point at which you should head upwards and then to the left toward Geryon South. And if you are using RH's GPX track log then you should probably follow the route he took on the way back, because it looks like he got a little muddled on the way there too.
