Fundulus heteroclitus (Canada to northeastern Florida) and F. grandis (northeast- ern Florida to Mexico) are valid species distinguished most readily from one another by the total number of mandibular pores (8'and 10, respectively) and the long anal sheath of female F. -

— OLIVER PEEBLES JENKINS Bantam, Ohio. Palo Alto, California. November 3, 1850. January 9, 1935. Perhaps few of us recall Dr. Jenkins—what a splendid teacher he was! An active mind—original, enthusiastic, and inspirational and a fund of humor were out- standing characteristics. Who could not profit from his instruction? To those of us who were much with J him he was a delightful companion and a lovable friend, in addition to his being a great naturalist. He was born at Bantam, Ohio, November 3, 1850, and died at Stanford University January 9, 1935 in his eighty-fifth year. He was buried at Palo Alto, California. He married Elizabeth R. Hester, formerly of Brookville, Indiana, where the writer and his wife, Mary Reynolds, attended Brookville College with her. His widow and two sons survive. He graduated from Moores OLIVER PEEBLES JENKINS Hill (now Evansville) College in 1869 and, after serving as teacher, high school principal, and superintendent in the public schools of Indiana, Wisconsin, and California, he returned, in 1876, to Moores Hill College as professor, where he remained for twelve years. That institution con- ferred upon him advanced and honorary degrees; he was also honored with a degree from Indiana University. He became a member of the faculty of the Indiana State Normal School, at Terre Haute in 1883, and left there to become Professor of Biology at DePauw University in 1886. He remained at DePauw until 1891, when he became a member of the faculty of Leland Stanford Jr. University at the time of its founding. He remained in this position until he retired as Professor Emeritus of Physiology in 1916. -

HOPKINS SEASIDE LABORATORY OF NATURAL HISTORY:DRAFT Occupants of Hopkins Seaside Laboratory Investigator Rooms During the twenty-five years Hopkins Seaside Laboratory was positioned at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, a significant amount of research was conducted by members of the Stanford University and visiting scientists from other institutions who took the opportunity to reserve private investigator rooms. Among the latter were Jacques Loeb from the University of Chicago, Bashford Dean and William K. Gregory both from Columbia, Wesley R. Coe from Yale University, Ida H. Hyde of the University of Kansas, Howard Ayres, Director of Lake Laboratory, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Franz Doflein of Freiberg, Germany, Charles Manning Child, Assistant Professor of Zoology, University of Chicago, and Cornelia M. Clapp, Professor of Zoology, Mt. Holyoke College. During his presidency, opportunities for legal immigration and visitation became stricter. California leads the resistance against this rising anti-immigrant sentiment as it strongly associates itself with diversity and immigration. -

David Dale Owen and Joseph Granville Norwood: Pioneer Geologists in Indiana and Illinois Clark Kimberling* In 1993 America’s highest-grossing concert act popularized a song entitled “Dire Wolf,”’ and a leading children’s television series was using dire wolves as bad guys.2Elsewhere, players of Dungeons and Dragons empathized with the species. Although these modern- day dire wolves are mythical and fantastic, a few millennia ago real ones roamed both American continent^.^ They hunted other ani- mals, slew them with their powerful jaws, and ate them. In 1854 Francis A. Linck of Evansville, Indiana, found a fossilized jawbone of what was later identified as the first known dire wolf and thus established a new species. Tracing the movement of this fossil from Evansville to New Harmony, Indiana, then to Philadelphia opens up an interesting view of the study of geology in the mid-nine- teenth-century Middle West and of two geologists living in New Harmony in 1854: David Dale Owen and Joseph Granville Norwood. Although the story of Francis A. Linck and his discovery can be viewed as a kind of introductory note to the Owen-Norwood account, it is in itself a fascinating tale. IU BICENTENNIAL SPECIAL How a Scandal Helped Change IU Forever PLUS IU's Most Influential Presidents & Honoring the Contributions Minorities & Women Have Made to the University By Carmen Siering Founded on January 20, 1820, as the State Seminary, Indiana University has grown from a one-building institution of learning—where a dozen young men were taught the classics by a single professor, Baynard Rush Hall—to a world-class research institution with more than 94,000 students and more than 21,000 faculty and staff on campuses in Bloomington and across the state. The bicentennial was being discussed as early as 2007—the year Michael A. McRobbie became president. But planning for this one-time-only celebration of the university’s first 200 years kicked into high gear in 2015. That’s the year James Capshew was hired as the official university historian, and the Office of the Bicentennial, directed by Kelly Kish, began focusing on a myriad of Bloomington-based and statewide projects to coincide with the anniversary. 2009. Proceedings of the Indiana Academy of Science 1 1 8(2): 143—1 86 THE "LOST" JORDAN AND HAY FISH COLLECTION AT BUTLER UNIVERSITY Carter R. Gilbert: Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida 32611 USA ABSTRACT. A large fish collection, preserved in ethanol and assembled by Drs. David S. Jordan and Oliver P. Hay between 1875 and 1892, had been stored for over a century in the biology building at Butler University. The collection was of historical importance since it contained some of the earliest fish material ever recorded from the states of South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Kansas, and also included types of many new species collected during the course of this work. In addition to material collected by Jordan and Hay, the collection also included specimens received by Butler University during the early 1880s from the Smithsonian Institution, in exchange for material (including many types) sent to that institution. Many ichthyologists had assumed that Jordan, upon his departure from Butler in 1879. had taken the collection. essentially intact, to Indiana University, where soon thereafter (in July 1883) it was destroyed by fire. The present study confirms that most of the collection was probably transferred to Indiana, but that significant parts of it remained at Butler. The most important results of this study are: a) analysis of the size and content of the existing Butler fish collection; b) discovery of four specimens of Micropterus coosae in the Saluda River collection, since the species had long been thought to have been introduced into that river; and c) the conclusion that none of Jordan's 1878 southeastern collections apparently remain and were probably taken intact to Indiana University, where they were lost in the 1883 fire. -
