The Consolation ofPhilosophy Shawna Purcell Every generation leaves its imprint of culture on the next generation. Just as the Western civilization inherited the European culture, the Romans inherited the Greek culture. These imprints over time, are refined and built upon to create a "new" culture. As Seneca put it, "A cultivates B and B cultivp.tes C; no one is his own master" (Seneca, 292). Focusing upon lit erature, we can observe the transition of the memorized and spo ken epics of the Greek culture to the written works of the Romans that are intertexted with ~lusions to particular epics. As twentieth century readers we can understand earlier works such as the Consolation ofPhilosophy by reading it against a tradition al background and applying the four fold scheme of interpreta tion. The following discussion will show how Boethius has deeply woven into his poems the philosophies and writing styles of his predecessors Homer, Seneca, Ovid and Plato, including the Stoics. -
Pompey, the Great Husband
Michael Jaffee Patterson Independent Project 2/1/13 Pompey, the Great Husband Abstract: Pompey the Great’s traditional narrative of one-dimensionally striving for power ignores the possibility of the affairs of his private life influencing the actions of his political career. This paper gives emphasis to Pompey’s familial relationships as a motivating factor beyond raw ambition to establish a non-teleological history to explain the events of his life. Most notably, Pompey’s opposition to the special command of the Lex Gabinia emphasizes the incompatibility for success in both the public and private life and Pompey’s preference for the later. Pompey’s disposition for devotion and care permeates the boundary between the public and private to reveal that the happenings of his life outside the forum defined his actions within. 1 “Pompey was free from almost every fault, unless it be considered one of the greatest faults for a man to chafe at seeing anyone his equal in dignity in a free state, the mistress of the world, where he should justly regard all citizens as his equals,” (Velleius Historiae Romanae 2.29.4). The annals of history have not been kind to Pompey. Characterized by the unbridled ambition attributed as his impetus for pursuing the civil war, Pompey is one of history’s most one-dimensional characters. This teleological explanation of Pompey’s history oversimplifies the entirety of his life as solely motivated by a desire to dominate the Roman state. However, a closer examination of the events surrounding the passage of the Lex Gabinia contradicts this traditional portrayal. -

DOCUMENTS OF A CRUMBLING MARRIAGE: THE CASE OF CICERO AND TERENTIA Available in published form in Phoenix 50. 3-4 (1996), 208-232 Jo-Marie Claassen, University of Stellenbosch Why did Cicero divorce his wife after more than thirty years? Is Plutarch right when he implies that she was dishonest and ill-treated her daughter? What was the nature of Roman marriage and family life? Was the Cicero family life ever ‘happy’, judged by modern standards? Can the resources of modern sociology apply, and will such application lead to an alternative interpretation of the known facts? INTRODUCTION Cicero’s private life as evidenced in his correspondence cannot be separated from his political life: at times each part seems to work as a sort of counter-irritant to troubles in the other half. While his marriage was still intact, it sometimes seemed to be all that saved the beleaguered consular’s sanity. His divorce of Terentia, his wife of over thirty years, and subsequent marriage to his young ward Publilia in late 47 or early 46 B.C. (at a time when Cicero’s political career seemed at an impasse) has never been satisfactorily accounted for. Cicero divorced this second wife soon after his daughter Tullia’s death in 45, ‘because she seemed pleased about it’ (Plut. Cic. 41.8).1 This divorce, too, seems odd, at the very least. The purpose of this paper is threefold. First it will review the usually cited evidence for the disintegration of the marriage of Cicero and Terentia, starting with Plutarch, with a view to reinterpretation of aspects that appear to have been misconstrued by the ancient biographer and followed by moderns. -

This study is an interpretation of some essential occurrences of virtus in the Roman literature from the beginnings until Livy. The method can be characterized as philological, more precisely compara tive-diachronical. Despite the great variety of literary genres, virtus remains rather similar from one author to another. The fact that the Romans repeatedly emphasized the importance of virtus goes to show the fundamental significance of this concept for their so ciety. Originally the conception of virtus was quite narrow consisting in the readiness of the agrarian and militant community to wage war and to endure hard toil. -

BOETHIUS AND HOMER by MICHAEL FOURNIER OETHIUS wrote his Consolation of Philosophy while in prison Bawaiting execution.1 Although it has a place in numerous traditions and genres (e.g., philosophical dialogue, protreptic, Menippean satire, theodicy, epiphany literature, contemptus mundi) it is prima facie a consolatio.2 Yet in the studies of ancient consolations by Constant Martha, Karl Buresch, Rudolf Kassel, and Horst-Theodor Johann3 there are no more than a few brief references to Boethius, and virtually none in the more recent surveys of the tradition by Robert Gregg and Paul Holloway.4 However, as not only the title (which he gave to the work himself) and the frequent use of consolatory topoi, but also the parallels with the dramatic setting of the Phaedo5 make clear, Boethius understood his work to belong to this tradition. In addition to consolations for the bereaved, Cicero asserts that there are a host of consola- tions for other afflictions, referring to ‘definite words of comfort’ for dealing with poverty (de paupertate,…et ingloria), a life without office and fame (vita inhonorata) as well as ‘definite forms of discourse dealing with exile, ruin of country, slavery, infirmity, blindness, every accident upon which the term disaster can be fixed’ (Tusc. 3,81). While Boethius deals with a number of these topics, including poverty (2,5; 3,3), the loss of office (2,6; 3,4) and fame (2,7; 3,6), exile (1,5,2-5), ruin of country (1,4,20-27), and even figurative and metaphorical slavery (1m2,25), infirmity (1m1,10-11) and blindness (1m3,1-2), the ultimate cause of the grief for which he seeks consolation is not one of these traditional problems.6 Boethius’ work is, like Cicero’s Consolatio, an example of self- consolation.7 Like Cicero, Boethius was not content simply to read and reflect upon other consolatory writings. -

Today we don’t need to look very far to see that our own generation is living through such a time, and this is true whether we are living in Europe or in Iraq, in Sudan or the Middle East, in Egypt or in the United States. As far as the West is concerned, we have only to think back to the horrific bombings that took place in the station at Madrid some time ago or to recall the shock and horror of 9/11. But there have been other horrors, other scenes of humiliation and terror, which we have witnessed on our television screens, and most notable of all, of course, the effects of the tsunami. Although these events may have taken place thousands of miles away, they too have seared our imagination. My question, then, is this: In such a time of afflic- tion, of what possible use to us is poetry? Can it be said to help or console us in any way? After 9/11, there was, as it happens, one remarkable, instinctive response of the people in New York,a response manifest not only in and around Ground Zero, but also in many of the streets of the city. Fabia the Vestal Virgin, sister of Terentia, was accused of incest with Cataline by Clodius in 73 BC, defended by Lutatius Catulus. Imagine 24-7 news networks during the Late Roman Republic exploiting the following events: BREAKING NEWS Pompey the Great has divorced his wife Mucia when he returned from the East in 62 BC; rumor had it she was having an affair with Julius Caesar. BREAKING NEWS Caesar has divorced Pompeia (no relation to Pompey1) following the scandal of the Bona Dea sacrilege. Pompeia was rumored to have had an affair with P. Clodius, who disguised himself as a woman to visit her during the most sacred rites of the Great Goddess.2 These transpired at Caesar’s house, where Caesar’s own mother and sister apprehended Clodius in their midst. According to our source (Suet. Iul. 74.2), “When summoned as a witness 1 against Clodius, Caesar declared that he had no evidence, although both his mother Aurelia and his sister Julia had given the same jurors a faithful account of the whole affair. INTRODUCTION HPHE correspondence in this volume (January, B.C. 48- J- February, B.C. 44) opens with a letter to Atticus from Pompey's headquarters in Epirus. There are only nine letters during the fifteen or sixteen months Cicero at which intervene between Cicero's ' departure Pharsalia. One of these is from Cselius . August, B.C. 48. (p. 4), foreshadowing the disaster which soon afterwards befell that facile intelligence but ill-balanced character in- ; and one from Dolabella (p. 6), spired with a genuine wish in which Caesar shared that Cicero should withdraw in time from the chances and dangers of the war. Cicero's own letters deal mostly with the anxiety which he was feeling as to his property at home, which was at the mercy of the Csesarians, and, in case of Pompey's defeat, would doubtless be seized by the victorious party, except such of it as was capable of being concealed or held in trust by his friends.
