Abstract: Superstar as a term is synonymous with Bollywood. The glamorous world of Bollywood has witnessed the rise of several stars, making a mark with their talent, charm and charisma. While some manage to swoon the audience over their looks, there are some who sweep them off their feet and are tagged as the Superstars of Bollywood! From Dilip Kumar to Shah Rukh Khan, B-town has many names in this list of superstars. But lately, we only have stars. The culture of superstar has become redundant. Reason? May be the advent of social media. With easy accessibility and direct contact with a star over social media has brought down the curiosity that once existed around the film stars. In this art exhibition Gupta puts viewers into contact with the big names and iconic images of Hindi cinema that have become the main symbols of Bollywood and Indian cinema. The exhibition features portraits of iconic actors throughout the 100 year period and uses Adobe Photoshop to filter, edit and recolour the images, in order to capture the visual vibrance Indian cinema is famous for. Actors featured in the exhibition include the infamous Shah Rukh and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, as well as less well-known actors from earlier in the 100 year period, such as Sunil Dutt. The use of films and visual material in the study of history has become increasingly popular over the course of the last three decades; however, this course does not view cinema merely an as instrument for the study of Indian history. Popular cinema, this lecture presumes, is an intrinsically interesting subject of inquiry, even if Indian scholars have come to this realization long after the Indian public had already declared its unmitigated affection for the movies.
