In broader terms, this lecture course also furnishes an introduction to the culture and history of modern Hindi-language cinema, the study of modern Indian history, some of the broader theoretical literature on nationalism and patriotism, and the study of popular culture. The use of films and visual material in the study of history has become increasingly popular over the course of the last three decades; however, this course does not view cinema merely an as instrument for the study of Indian history. Popular cinema, this lecture presumes, is an intrinsically interesting subject of inquiry, even if Indian scholars have come to this realization long after the Indian public had already declared its unmitigated affection for the movies.

  • Sample PDF of Kishore Kumar the Versatile Genius
ShashikantCONTENT Kinikar SAMPLE FOREWORD In our film universe, Kishore Kumar stands for such a unique multiplicity of talents, images and capacities that he defies any precise or conclusive evaluation. If you fudge him for oneCONTENT thing, he pops up with another. Not only did his voice lend a personality to our highly popular heroes, but he also projected himself as a versatile comedian, tragedian, dancer and singer of a wide variety of songs of different moods and spirits. Equally confounding was his personal life in the profession as well as in love and marriage. To encompass such an artist within the two covers ofSAMPLE a book is a daunting task. But author Shashikant Kinikar has been an expert at the job, having done several graphics of film biographies, directors, actors, singers, composers, over the years. In fact, I always discuss in my friend circle that he ought to qualify for the Limca or Guinness Book of Records for maximum number of such books in Marathi, Hindi vi and English. They shed light on what was unknown and stand as a permanent record for posterity. For this volume, Kinikar must have laboured very hard, doing research, questioning people, digging out facts, to present a life story in narrative form... from struggle to success. There are world-beaters of Kishore’s early days in the film industry, when his elder brother Ashok Kumar was already a top star. We remember a small theatre in Deolali, near Nashik, showing “Muqaddar’’, when we were bowled over by Kishore crooning “Aati hai yaad humko Janwari Farwari.” Of course his initial ghosting for Dev Anand in “Ziddi” was a bit shaky but got overshadowed by his playing Dev’s romantic guide in “Tamasha’’.

  • An Indian Journey
VIJ AY MISHRA AFTER NAIP AUL: AN INDIAN JOURNEY 'The Hindu has no sense of history', said Mr Ratan on my last evening in Bombay. It was not a new statement since I had been reminded of it many times before. Its suddenness may have had something to do with my own tendency to relapse into the anecdotal and the inconsequential but it did seem a bit odd nevertheless that here I was faced with this bald statement after only a few minutes of hurried acquaintance. I suppose the Indian colonial in me (albeit of the diasporic variety : is there such a thing?) likes this historical claptrap and draws it out from unsuspecting people. In the colonies we were told that a race without history is never redeemed from time. That is how the Principal of Suva Grammar School (a historian who had read his Four Quartets well) established that essential difference between Western historiography and our own special brand of karmic recurrence even though in the Pacific karma was really quite meaningless. In fact in our everyday lives karma occurred only in the vulgarised phrase dharam-karam obviously modelled on the Sanskrit dvandva compound. The vulgarity of the Indian metatext quite possibly confirmed the schoolmaster's worst fears about the Indian race. You know what I mean-these Indians are fatalists, they relapse so easily into the world of childhood, the world of pure fantasy. Not surprisingly, being brought up on a rigidly pragmatic conception of history, Mr Ratan's comment hit an imaginative part of my being. Uncompromisingly Hegelian in my outlook (Hegel's racism notwithstanding), I liked Mr Ratan's implied connections between his own reading of the Indian and Hegel's discourse of orientalism.

SWAPNIL SANSAR, ENGLISH WEEKLY,LUCKNOW, 28,MARCH, 2019 (06) Tragedy Queen of Indian Cinema Contd. From Page no.05 Reluctantly, Meena Kumari agreed, but after appearing in a film. When Meena Kumari came to know about Pran playing the shooting for five days, she instigated a disagreement with Mehboob Khan and titular role, she was not very much convinced by the choice of director. It was so, because during those days, Pran was more popular for portraying a suave villain which made Meena Kumari doubtful. But when she saw Pran on the first day of shooting, she was left awestruck and highly praised him for his acting skills and his huge transformation as the capricious tyrant Halaku. 1957: Sharada – directed by L.V. Prasad, was Meena Kumari's first venture with Raj Kapoor. A difficult role to essay, it was refused by all leading actresses of the day until Meena Kumari finally agreed.
