Treasury! Masterpieces from the Hermitage Hermitage Amsterdam

This collection of pieces is both a feast for the eyes and an enthralling quest for the meaning of art at various times and in a wide range of cultures. Masterpieces by Western artists like Velázquez, Tintoretto, Rembrandt, Matisse, and Fabre are com- pared with top works from many different periods, places, and cultures. What, for example, links a sixteenth-century triptych by Maarten van Heemskerck with an image of the Buddha made in twelfth-century China? Thomas Hennell The Last English Watercolourist Jessica Kilburn

When John Rothenstein, Director of the Tate Gallery, published the third volume of his Modern English Painters in 1984, he subtitled it Hennell to Hockney. While—now as then—David Hockney needs no introduction, Thomas Hennell (1903–1945) has somehow slipped off the radar and undoubtedly deserves to be more widely recognized today. At the time of his death, Hen- nell was widely considered to be one of Britain’s most significant watercolorists and notable cultural figures. He struggled with seri- ous mental illness, was diagnosed as schizophrenic and spent the years from 1932 to 1935 in three different “mental hospitals,” the Maudsley Hospital amongst them. Edward Bawden encouraged him to “center and compose” the experience of schizophrenia by writing about it, and Hennell’s remarkable illustrated account, The Witnesses, was published in 1938. Eric Ravilious, too, helped Hennell with his recovery, providing a series of wood engravings as illustrations for The Poems of Thomas Hennell, published in 1936. At the outbreak of war in 1939 Hennell wrote to War Artists’ Advisory Committee, offering his services as an artist. From 1943 he was a full-time salaried war artist. He served in Europe and the Far East and was in Java when he was captured by Indonesian nationalist fighters in November 1945. He was pre- sumed to have been killed shortly after. Hennell’s paintings and drawings provide an insight into an era: they will appeal to those with a love of the countryside and farming, an interest in the Sec- ond World War, and admirers of the now very famous artists who were his friends and regarded him as an equal. Jessica Kilburn is an artist, researcher, and writer whose work has appeared in the poetry journal 14 and in Illustration magazine. She contributed to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and curated a permanent exhibition on Lancelot “Capability” Brown for his birthplace in Northumberland. Moholy-Nagy in Britain 1935-1937 Valeria Carullo

One of the most innovative artists and thinkers of the first half of the twentieth century, László Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) emigrat- ed to Britain after the forced closure of the Bauhaus, following his colleague Walter Gropius. This book examines the two years he spent in Britain in the mid-1930s before moving on to the United States—two intense years filled with commissions, collab- orations, opportunities, disappointments, artistic exchanges, and friendship. Moholy-Nagy was especially known in the UK as a photographer, his photos having previously been published in the Architectural Review. In Britain, he worked as a graphic designer on books, advertisements, and London Transport posters. He worked as an art advisor for Simpsons’ menswear store and designed publicity for the Isokon Furniture Company. He made a couple of documentary films—Lobsters and New Architecture at London Zoo—and worked as a designer on Things to Come for Alexander Korda. Although brief, Moholy-Nagy’s English period represented the peak of his photographic activity. As well as the films and photographic essays for the AR, he was introduced by John Betjeman to publisher John Miles, who commissioned him to illustrate three books: The Street Markets of London, Eton Portrait, and An Oxford University Chest. He also worked with Gropius and Maxwell Fry on various exhibition designs. Moholy-Nagy also gave lectures and wrote articles throughout his stay and The London Gallery held an exhibition of his work in January 1937. This highly visual book weaves a stimulating collection of images, documents and narrative to create a picture of the man and the artist during this critical and highly produc- tive phase of his life. Dorothea Tanning Transformations Victoria Carruthers

This is the definitive study of American artist Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012), positioning her as one of the most fascinating and significant creative forces to emerge during the 20th century. It provides a framework within which to consider the range and depth of Tanning’s work, well beyond the better-known early surrealist works of the 1940s, and makes connections between her life experiences and thematic preoccupations. Extensively illustrated and featuring unpublished material from interviews which the author conducted with the artist between 2000 and 2009, this book will appeal to the general museum-going public as well as academics, students, curators, and collectors. Victoria Carruthers is Senior Lecturer in modern and contemporary art history and theory at the Australian Catholic University, Sydney, Australia. Her research explores the intersections between art, literature, and music across visual cultures in the twentieth century. Victoria completed her doctoral thesis on the work of Dorothea Tanning and has published several articles on her practice. She was fortunate enough to visit the artist on a number of occasions and enjoy many lengthy conversations on her life and work. Close Cousins Stephen Buckley, Paintings Stephen Buckley

For more than forty years Stephen Buckley, (b. 1944 Leicester, England) has concerned himself with addressing the major themes of the twentieth century through a personal style oscillating be- tween the materiality of Kurt Schwitters, the dandyism of Francis Picabia, and the intellectual rigor of Marcel Duchamp. He takes the two most basic components of a conventional painting (can- vas and stretcher) and makes multi-dimensional constructions, joins groups of single canvases together in overlapping structures, makes shaped canvases, cuts a stretcher with a variegated edge, stitches and weaves together strips of canvas, patches pieces of canvas onto another support, and adds cardboard tubing, rope, found objects and cut-out shapes. In the 1970s and 1980s, Buck- ley saw extended prominence in the art press, starting with claims that he was “the Punk Rock of contemporary painting” and ending with the title of “the ubiquitous Stephen Buckley.” Since then, he has made some of his most compelling paintings, lush pop canvases full of symbols and color, a far cry from the pared- down, industrial feel of some of his early works. Stephen Buckley is an eminent British artist with more than fifty solo exhibitions worldwide. He is represented in many interna- tional collections including the Arts Council of England; The British Council; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and Tate Britain, London. Laura Schawelka Double Issues Laura Schawelka

In her often space-consuming installations, Laura Schawelka makes use of photography, video, and sculpture in a multilayered dialog in which traditional definitions such as subject, image content, or image carrier are called into question. Images are shown as larger than life or miniaturized; they become back- grounds or are equipped with props. In her latest work, the artist focuses on the role of photography in the development of modern consumer society—from the first department stores in Paris to the present day. In doing so, she shines a light on online trade, among other things: What does it mean if goods are only communicated through other goods, computers, cell phones, tablets—in short, screens? If feeling something in a store is replaced by swiping on a touchscreen? If this distance, this withholding of the genuine ob- ject, is precisely what prompts the desire for it in the first place? Laura Schawelka received a Master of Fine Arts from the Califor- nia Institute of the Arts in 2015. In 2013, she studied at Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Frankfurt. Billy Al Bengston Paintings & Watercolors Mary Agnes Donoghue Edited by Hans Neuendorf

This is the first monograph on the Californian pop artist in more than thirty years, with a representative selection of works from 1957 to 2014. Billy Al Bengston is the very personification of the cheerful, carefree attitude towards life in California—in both his work and his personal life. After studying at the California College of Arts and Crafts and the Otis Art Institute, he exhibited at the legendary Ferus Gallery in 1957 and was the central figure among a group of artists that included Frank Gehry, Edward Kienholz, Ed Ruscha, and Ken Price. BAB, as he apostrophizes himself, inserts car and motorcycle parts as motifs into his other- wise abstract paintings. He uses lacquer and spray paint instead of oil and aluminum panels with dented surfaces instead of the traditional canvas. Art and lifestyle combine to create the individ- ual “Bengston iconography” of California Cool. Mary Agnes Donoghue is a screenwriter and director. The three women artists presented here—Rusudan Khizanishvili, Tamara Kvesitadze and Natela Grigalashvili— strive to maintain the Georgian way of life by also transforming it. The King Is Female presents the works of these three artists in the context of family traditions and historical customs in their homeland. It conveys a fascinating, personal view of the life and role of women in Georgia. Nina Mdivani is a Georgian curator living in New York. Kabinett Edition Series Sebastian Speckmann Some Things Can Be Left Unsaid Sebastian Speckmann and Anna Wesle

In three of the works, created especially for the present exhibition and publication, Speckmann works with a new cutting technique and crosshatching. Lese and Reflex, both from 2018, show snap- shots, brief moments. Executed with an entirely novel application of line and vibrancy of color, the shimmering palm grove in Lese recalls the tropical landscape in Lot and Domäne. It remains open whether the crocodile in the print Reflex extends upwards in triumph or falls downwards on being struck. In Basis (2018), the natural stone plinth, or the foundation upon which the statue is positioned, assumes a central position. The figure itself, inspired by a socialist sculpture, appears lackluster and outshined, while its head dissolves against graphic ambient noise. The work seems intent on conveying to us that although the ground remains and will endure through time, protagonists come and go. Here, Sebas- tian Speckmann introduces a play of ideas, oscillating between utopia, dystopia, and changing times. Sebastian Speckmann was born in 1982 in Wolfen. He studied from 2003 to 2011 at Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, Leipzig, and Royal Academy of Arts, London. He was a master apprentice under Professor Heribert C. Ottersbach and now teaches at Kunstakademie Bad-Reichenhall, Bad-Reichenhall. Anna Wesle is Ccurator at the Museum Franz Gertsch in Burgdorf, Switzerland. Gabriela Stellino – Bildgeschehen Gabriela Stellino

The meticulousness and patience with which Gabriela Stellino goes about her work, elaborates her art, is clearly reflected in the artworks themselves. The delicate transformations on the paper, the fine forms that appear without becoming completely tangible, also occasion most of the viewers to decelerate and concentrate on the muted subtleties, to look very carefully. Especially when they are projected, the Secuencias have a pronounced meditative quality that transmit an idea about the about actual situation and are beneficial for the viewer. Gabriela Stellino was born to an Italian family from Piedmont that had turned its back on Europe shortly before the outbreak of the First World War. Her mother’s side of the family also has a Spanish branch. Gabriela Stellino herself was born in Resistencia, the capital of the province of Chaco in northeastern Argentina, but the family actually lived in Flores, a middle-class district in Buenos Aires. For more than twenty years, the artist has lived and worked in Southern Baden. Since 1999, her works have been represented at exhibitions in the State of Baden-Württemberg and elsewhere in Germany and abroad. Ralph Fleck Malerei – Painting – Pintura Ralph Fleck

Long before Ralph Fleck starts painting, he has memorized or even internalized his motif. He doesn’t just paint casually, though it could appear that way given his brushwork that is partially im- petuous and counter to the logic of the image. Fleck knows what he’s doing. The former student of Peter Dreher is a devotee of the series format; his Fields or Alps come close to the time-of-day paintings by Claude Monet, whom Fleck clearly references, albeit in an ironic and critical way, in another series entitled Giverny. Ralph Fleck is a German artist who studied at the Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe under Peter Dreher. Achim Vogel Muranyi certainly knows horror when he sees it. His objects raise questions about our real missions and make use of his own unique cadences, because he understands life better that way. Maybe arcane rituals of an ancient order are concealed, but cracking the code only deepens the mystery. Interacting with his art makes people feel both like a helpless witness and an enthusiastic perpetrator—whether out of tribal loyalty or a com- bination of cultural biases and fears, one will never know. The catalogue raisonné of the paintings, drawings, and watercol- ors of the Expressionist, Otto Mueller, first published in 2003, is now available in a greatly expanded edition. Despite his mem- bership in the “Die Brücke” Expressionist movement, Mueller developed his own individual style. His oeuvre is independent and unmistakable, stunningly complex, multilayered and differenti- ated. Otto Mueller variegates sensitive images of bathers, nudes, and portraits both in interior settings and outdoors, and pos- sessed a distinctive empathy for the life conditions of the Roma. Regardless of his subjects, he concentrated uncompromisingly on a few specific themes. Dr. Tanja Pirsig-Marshall is the Deputy Director at LWL-Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kultur Münster. Ascher: The Mad Silkman Zika & Lida Ascher: Textiles and Fashion Konstantina Hlavácková

Although the name and the brand are entirely unknown in the Czech Republic, Ascher has been synonymous with fine textile design for more than seventy years in western Europe. This book traces the story of Zika Ascher and his wife Lida, whose personal and professional lives played out against the dramatic history of the twentieth century. After leaving Czechoslovakia in 1939, they built a highly successful enterprise in London that specialized in fashion fabrics. French, Italian, and British designers and fashion houses chose Ascher textiles for their collections, including Dior, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Pierre Cardin, Yves Saint Laurent, Ronald Pa- terson, David Sassoon, and Alberto Fabiani. Lida and Zika were especially celebrated for their Squares, a collection of luxurious printed scarves designed by famous artists such as Henry Moore, Henri Matisse, and André Derain. The book weaves together all the different strands of their eventful lives to produce a compre- hensive account that goes beyond the individual artistic, technical, and business aspects. It devotes considerable attention to the years before Zika and Lida left Czechoslovakia in 1939 to go into exile in the United Kingdom, and it subsequently continues to map developments in their former homeland, which they never renounced. Lida and Zika’s son Peter Ascher has also contributed to the book with some of his childhood memories. Florian Slotawa: Stuttgart sichten. Skulpturen der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart Kat. Deichtorhallen Hamburg Florian Slotawa, Dirk Luckow, Christofer Conrad, and Julia Moritz

Almost no other artist has such a keen sense of how to deal with art collections as Florian Slotawa, who was born in 1972 in Rosenheim, studied in Munich and Hamburg, and has exhibited at venues including MoMA PS1 in New York (2009), the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck (2012), and the National Galerie at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin (2014). For nearly twenty years, the Berlin-based artist has pursued performative strategies in his sculptural work. Florian Slotawa develops the presentation in Hamburg from different perspectives, including presenting sculp- tures on their own, bringing them into exciting dialogues with one another, sorting them according to a certain order, combining them with everyday objects, and—as in the case of the Picasso ensemble of the Bathers—recreating them. Slotawa’s seemingly improvised yet precisely positioned, careful arrangement of the sculptures makes it possible to see art and its relationship to the everyday world in a new light. Florian Slotawa, born 1972, lives in Berlin. His career gathered speed in 1999 with his “Hotel Photographs” in the German weekly Süddeutsche Magazin, where he built hotel room fur- nishings and sculptures, then photographed them. The success of this contribution was tremendous and Florian Slotaws gathered invitations for exhibitions: 2002, Museum Wiesbaden; 2003, Malmö Kunsthall; 2004, Hamburger Kunsthalle; 2006, 4th Ber- lin Biennial; 2007, Made in Germany in Hanover; 2009, Museum of Contemporay Photography Chicago, and P.S.1, MoMA; 2011, MMK Frankfurt/Main; 2012, Pinakothek der Moderne Munich; 2013, Art Gallery; 2014, Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin; 2016, Guggenheim Bilbao, among others. Aab ~ Wasser – Ahmad Rafi Malerei & Installation /Paintings & Installation 2014-2018 Peter Forster

The exhibition in Frankfurt (Kunstverein Familie Montez) showed an overview of current works (2014-2018) by the Iranian artist Ahmad Rafi, who lives in Frankfurt. The topic of those works is “water” (Iranian: “aab”), which is expressed in different media (paintings, video installations, mixed media). Traditionally the flow of water is a symbol of movement and rest at the same time. It is an image of the human being or passing time. Within this topic Rafi transmits social themes as well, for example: Jour- ney to Lampedusa, in which Rafi deals with the topic of people fleeing across the sea. Marcus Weber: Krazy Dog Moon Kat Kat. Villa Merkel, Galerien der Stadt Esslingen Marcus Weber Edited by Andreas Baur

The book on the occasion of Marcus Weber’s exhibition KRAZY DOG MOON KAT presents for the first time a wide selection of paintings by the artist, who was born in Stuttgart in 1965 and now lives in Berlin. They are narrative tongue-in-cheek images, allusive group portraits, and urban landscapes with grotesque re-wordings of social orders, along with caricatured and exagger- ated individual characters. There are flashes of painterly sophis- tication, so that some works may be read as a capriccio, deso- late, and romantic at the same time. Marcus Weber displays an unmistakable enthusiasm for artists like James Ensor and Philip Guston. All in all, this creates a grotesque mixture mocking each and every hierarchy, based as much on productive bridging into the realm of comics by Georg Herriman as it is on art history. Weber is a genre painter in the best tradition, who paints images of society. Unconventional communities are moved into focus: isolated men at bar counters, characters reading art magazines, people slouching in design furniture, and café house scenes where masked people gather together. As a subtle and multi-layered reaction to current political and social conditions, these works rival so called new history painting, which is usually exhausted by painted copies of press photos. Accordingly, the New York Times, on the occasion of his first solo exhibition in the United States, attributed to the artist a surprisingly up-to-date approach in his emulation of the immutability of real life. Marcus Weber, born 1965, lives in Berlin. He studied painting at the Kunstakadmie Düsseldorf. His paintings bridge into the realm of comics by George Herriman and are somewhat like the paint- ings by Peter Saul. Single oil paintings from Marcus Weber from the Adalberstraße series belong to the collections of Kasper König and his daughter Lili. Takako Saito: DREAMS TO DO Kat. Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen Takako Saito Edited by Eva Schmidt and Johannes Stahl

Takako Saito has become internationally known for her objects, artist books, performances, and actions in the context of Flux- us. She has always been interested in the world of things and everyday life, to which she adds her individual artistic gesture through interventions and small actions. Natural materials such as stones, mussels, onion peels, and chestnuts are her preferred materials, alongside various kinds of paper, plastics, foams, and wood pieces. Unmistakable are her carefully crafted object boxes that she has been creating since the 1960s, as well as the numer- ous free chess games, which were first sold at George Maciunas’s FluxShop. A rather playful approach is characteristic of many of Saito’s works; she is always looking for new game variants beyond fixed rules. The viewers are involved as co-players and co-designers, since the artist has a penchant for the participation strategy, particularly in her Me and You-Shops—market stall- like shops where the artist as a saleswoman interacts with the audience. The exhibition and the book Takako Saito: DREAMS TO DO are designed retrospectively and present works from all important phases. Takako Saito was born in 1929 in Sabae-Shi (Fukui, Japan). In 1963 she moved to New York where she made the acquaintance of George Maciunas, spiritus rector of the FLUXUS movement. Takako worked constantly together with him for FLUX-shop and created out of the knowledge of this practice her own varying games, performances, clothing, shops, and artists books. She now lives in Dusseldorf, Germany. Eva Schmidt is an art historian and a curator. Since 2004 she has served as Director of the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen. She has curated numerous mono- graphic exhibitions of Lucian Freud, Sigmar Polke, Bridget Riley, Antoni Tapies, Niele Toroni, and others. Birgit Werres: samples for pieces – maybe Kienbaum Artists’ Books 2019 Birgit Werres Edited by Jochen Kienbaum and Laura Kienbaum

Industrially prefabricated objects dominate works by Birgit Werres, yet they enter into heterogeneous combinations with additional elements made by the artist. Birgit Werres finds her materials in warehouses and at industrial production sites, where she encounters the things that arouse her aesthetic interest, which has been fine-tuned for many years. She initially studied under Tony Cragg, before graduating from Irmin Kamp’s class. Her rededication of profane figurativeness is carried out in sequences, stratifications, or composite materials. In such works, the artist continues to expand on formal characteristics such as volume, texture, and structure. The striking intrinsic color of the materials tends to be of great significance. In contrast to the monumental corporeality of the objects, it additionally obscures the origin, function, and properties of the material. Her unconventional sculptures and installations are quite often mentioned in reference to works by Robert Smithson, Barry Le Va, Richard Artschwager, and Richard Serra. Birgit Werres, born 1962, lives in Dusseldorf and teaches Creative Design at the University of Cologne. She studied with Tony Cragg in Dusseldorf and never quit collecting and sampling industrial prefabricated objects. Franziska Windisch walk with a wire Franziska Windisch Edited by Julia Katharina Thiemann

Franziska Windisch explores the entanglement of trace, sound, and movement in her work “walk with a wire” (2018). She initiates the sound production from the material of a cassette’s magnetic tape, which she scans by hand in a loop. The touch of the fingers and the surroundings leave traces on the empty magnetic tape, which produce different noises when played back afterwards. Both the text as well as the concept of the perfor- mance were created at a historical excavation site in Greece. The confrontation with the remnants of an ancient urban space resulted in a reflection on temporality. Franziska Windisch is a curator, author, and German contempo- rary artist. Elsa Salonen Stories Told by Stones Edited by Christine Nippe

Finnish artist Elsa Salonen examines our relationship to nature in a poetic manner. Salonen’s works emerge out of her artistic interpretation of ancient alchemical knowledge. In her art, she activates animist rituals and magic practices once believed to have been lost, asking questions about our relationship to the environ- ment. A profound act of listening to the world is made available to us as “stories told by stones,” an enrichment of the millen- nia-long encounter between humans and stones and a record of the transformation from stones into pigments and from pigments into art. The respectful relationship of the artist to the stones transforms our own encounter into an audience with some of our oldest kin. This is animism at its most life- and world-affirming. Remembering Landscape Kat. Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen Edited by Eva Schmidt and Kai Vöckler

Must contemporary landscapes still encompass the romantic ideal of a natural, agricultural area? The landscapes being made today are often “non-places,” bearing traces of economic inter- ventions, changing demarcations, and evidence displacement, war, urban sprawl, and mining. Quite often, only a kind of residual nature remains, where a few ruins tell of historical events. Barren landscapes that speak of past violence are degraded to (illustra- tive) material. At the same time, memories are visibly embodied in architectural monuments from the twentieth century. In this exhibition and in numerous contributions to the extensive book, twenty-four artists and artist groups bring the theme of landscape to life. Landscapes between fiction, symbolism, and documen- tation are presented, appealing to our ability to decipher these images and calling upon our imagination and empathy. LAND_SCOPE. Fotoarbeiten von Roni Horn bis Thomas Ruff aus der DZ Bank Kunstsammlung Kat. Münchner Stadtmuseum Edited by Ulrich Pohlmann, Christina Leber, Katharina Zimmermann, and Erec Gellautz

Since the end of the eighteenth century, the art of Romanticism has shaped our idea of idyllic and sublime nature. But painters like Philipp Otto Runge and Caspar David Friedrich shifted the focus. As a brilliant technical draftsman, Friedrich transformed actual landscape scenes into images full of symbolic meaning. Many of these paintings captivate with their entrancing and op- pressing depiction of spatial vastness—a way of seeing that also shapes contemporary photographic art, which appears to focus ever more on changes of natural and commercial landscapes and examine the effects of industrialization. The book brings together works by nearly sixty artists from the DZ BANK art collection. This synopsis, divided into seven chapters rich in illustrations and text, reveals the great variety of possibilities with which artists approach landscape in the medium of photography. Different types of landscapes are presented, such as ideal landscapes and deserted areas, political territories and agricultural landscapes. In addition, these photos display the potential for abstraction in the photographic image, allowing landscape to be negotiated as a concept, or even to appear as a digital formation. Ulrich Pohlmann has been the director of the photographic col- lection of the Munich Stadtmuseum since 1991. He was guest lec- turer at the Universites of Hamburg, Zurich, and Munich, where he lives and works. Christina Leber has been the director of the DZ Bank Art Collection since 2011 and also edited at Snoeck 2018 the catalog Fotofinish, on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of DZ Bank Art Collection. Anthony Caro Stainless Steel Karen Wilkin

This is the sixth volume in Lund Humphries’ series of mono- graphs on British sculptor Anthony Caro and the first publication to focus on his use of stainless steel as a distinct body of work. Caro employed stainless steel extensively, from intimately scaled Table Sculptures to extremely large works, over many decades. Caro’s exploration and interrogation of this material became in- creasingly important in his mature works. Karen Wilkin analyzes Caro’s use of stainless steel in the context of the development of modernist constructed sculpture, pioneered in the United King- dom by Caro and in the United States by David Smith, a friend and admired predecessor, from whom Caro inherited most of the stainless steel he first employed following Smith’s untimely death. Karen Wilkin’s text represents a much needed overview of Caro’s late career and a vital expansion of our understanding of twenti- eth-century and early twenty-first-century modernist sculpture. Karen Wilkin is an independent curator and art critic based in New York. Thomas Baumgärtel 2008-2018 German Urban Pop Art Edited by Thomas Baumgärtel

The banana—a statement, his weapon: it is Thomas Baumgärtel’s commendation for galleries and other art venues. As one of the first street artists in Germany, the Cologne-based painter has been using his banana stencil as a universal tool for more than thirty years now. Baumgärtel also manipulates the past by transforming “old masters” or three-dimensional objects with his templates and textual messages. In doing so, he points to painful aspects of contemporary society. Thomas Baumgärtel is a German street art artist. Urban Art! Biennial 2019 Edited by Meinrad Maria Grewenig

The world’s most important exhibition of —present- ed for the fifth time in 2019. Its themes are the city and urban lifestyle; its canvases are walls, doors, or windows; its artists are cosmopolitan. Since the turn of the millennium, Urban Art has developed out of the non-commercial, often illegal art forms of graffiti and street art. Although it makes use of the same stylistic means—spraying, tagging, the deliberate inclusion of drips, the use of graffiti scripts, etc.—it transports these as commissioned works into the legal space of the museum, gallery, or architec- ture. The Urban Art! Biennial at the World Cultural Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte is the largest international exhibition of its kind. Fifty individual works and twenty-five installations by one hundred artists shed light on the latest developments and positions from Western metropolises, as well as from current hot spots around the globe. A Reluctant Memoir Robert Ballagh

A fiercely honest and unvarnished autobiography from Ireland’s most successful and controversial living artist. Making his name as a Pop artist in the late 1960s and 70s, Robert Ballagh quickly achieved an international reputation. With little formal artistic training, he triumphed in his field despite often formidable hostili- ty. His work was also strikingly topical and political, playing with classic images by Goya or Delacroix to express outrage about the situation in Northern Ireland. But it is his series of realistic portraits of writers, politicians, and fellow artists—often searingly inquisitive and moving in equal measure—that have won him lasting fame. His subjects include Brian Friel, Seamus Heaney, Samuel Beckett, James Watson, Francis Crick, Harold Pinter, and Fidel Castro. And his remarkable self-portraits unsparingly doc- ument the process of his own ageing. This memoir is also a story of Ireland over the past sixty years—its violence, hypocrisy, and immobility as well as its creativity and generosity. Robert Ballagh is an Irish artist, painter, and designer. He lives and works in Dublin. Radical Women Jessica Dismorr and her Contemporaries Alicia Foster

Radical Women tells an original story of British modernism from the perspective of Jessica Dismorr’s career, along with the women artists—some famous, some lesser known—she worked and ex- hibited with. The work of Jessica Dismorr (1885-1939) has been described as encapsulating ‘the stylistic developments of twen- tieth-century British Art’, and her oeuvre certainly encompasses some its most exciting moments—from Rhythm in the early 1910s, through Vorticism, towards post-war modernist figuration and finally into the abstraction she shared with radical political artists groups in the 1930s. Within this period of intense creativi- ty, which extended beyond art to literary and design accomplish- ments too, Dismorr was privileged to work and exhibit alongside some of the most exciting female artists of the time, including Barbara Hepworth and Winifred Nicholson, to lesser-known figures such as Dorothy Shakespear, Anne Estelle Rice and Helen Saunders. Bringing a web of fascinating connections to light for the first time, this publication provides a fresh interpretation of a pioneering period and the role women played within it. Alicia Foster is an art historian and novelist. Awarded her PhD in history of art from the University of Manchester, her books include Tate Women Artists (2004) and Warpaint (2013). John Ruskin An Idiosyncratic Dictionary Encompassing his Passions, his Delusions and his Prophecies Michael Glover

From Aesthete to Ziffern, Baby-Language to Verbosity, Badgers to Railway Stations: this gloriously serendipitous dictionary pres- ents the life, times, and strong opinions of John Ruskin (1819- 1900)—art critic, patron, draftsman, watercolor painter, social thinker, and philanthropist. Michael Glover’s delightful A-Z distills the essence of Ruskin, revealing a lighter side to the man known for his thirty-nine volumes of ponderous prose. When off his guard, Ruskin could write pithily and amusingly, but he was also a fascinating amalgam of self-contradictions. Combin- ing judiciously selected extracts from Ruskin’s writings with the author’s wittily insightful interpretations, this book is essential reading for all those curious to know what Ruskin did with a cyanometer, why he hated iron railings and the Renaissance, and how Proust’s admiration of the man was tinged with distrust. Michael Glover is a poet and the visual arts critic and senior feature writer for the Independent. He is also the poetry editor of the Tablet. As an arts journalist, he has been a regular contributor to The Times, the Financial Times, the New Statesman, and The Economist, as well as a London correspondent for ARTnews. Emil Nolde – Vetter der Tiefe – mit der Korrespondenz Nolde – Klee Kat. Zentrum Paul Klee Edited by Fabienne Eggelhöfer, Nina Zimmer, and Christian Ring

Published on the occasion of the exhibition Emil Nolde at Zen- trum Paul Klee, this volume includes the first ever collection of correspondence between the Nolde and Klee couples, in addition to illustrations of the works on show. Any encounter with the unknown seemed to always inspire Emil Nolde’s artistic work. In his oeuvre there are great number references to the grotesque, the fantastic and the exotic—a fascination he shared with Paul Klee. Grotesques enabled both to critically comment on contemporary events. Fantastic depictions in Nolde’s work stem from the serious examination of the unknown and uncanny and, accordingly, take a central position in his work. In Paul Klee’s work, the realm of ghosts, demons, and other hybrid beings rather serve a kind of edification. For Nolde as well as for Klee and many of their contemporaries, exotic motifs formed a new inspiring vocabulary of forms, which helped them transcend the restrictions of the European tradition. The volume at hand presents works by Nolde that until now might have been only of marginal interest to the art world—but were of great importance to the artist and thus deserve our full attention. This research on the written commu- nication between the two artist friends and their families fills an academic void and sheds light on heretofore unknown aspects of a mutually inspiring friendship. Emil Nolde (1867–1956) was unquestionable an outstanding German expressionist painter who is legendary for his watercol- or paintings. Since 1923 he and his wife Ada (1879–1946) met sporadically with Paul (1879–1940) and Lily (1876–1946) Klee. The couples relationship was complex; Emil Nolde didn’t hide his “ambigous attitude” to National Socialism, to which the Klee’s were in total opposition. Their relationship reveals the ambiva- lence and complexity of a friendship during that time. For both, art is above all else. Fashion Metropolis Berlin 1836 – 1939 The Story of the Rise and Destruction of the Jewish Fashion Industry Uwe Westphal

As of the mid-nineteenth century, Berlin stood alongside Paris as a metropolis for fashion. Many young entrepreneurs, mainly of Jewish descent, established themselves in Berlin and invested in creative designs and innovative production methods. It would be difficult to imagine the stylish women’s fashions of the 1920s without companies like Gebrüder Manheimer or the Wertheim department store. This unique tradition was destroyed by the Nazis in the 1930s as several renowned Jewish clothing compa- nies were transferred into Aryan hands and their rightful owners were driven out of the country or murdered. This book’s gripping depiction of events brings to life the Roaring Twenties in Berlin while also serving as a clear and painful reminder of the great injustice that was committed. Uwe Westphal is an author residing in Berlin and London. He has worked for PEN and as a journalist and producer for PBS and CBS in New York. The art historian has spent decades research- ing the subject of this book, gathering information from around the world, both in archives and in personal conversations with witnesses of the time. HYPER! A Journey into Art and Music Cat. Deichtorhallen Hamburg Hans Ulrich Obrist, Max Dax, and Dirk Luckow

What happens when musicians make use of ideas and strategies from the art world? And what kind of pictures result when paint- ers are influenced by music? To be interested in other people’s lives, to follow the unknown, to copy it, to use it in one’s own work—in short, to cross-map between the worlds of music and the visual arts: this is the subject of HYPER! A Journey into Art and Music curated by Max Dax, the former editor-in-chief of Spex and Electronic Beats. The book will include classic works such as Peter Saville’s ground-breaking album cover for New Order’s 1983 masterpiece Power, Corruption and Lies, and the narrative, minimalist imagery of Emil Schult on which the cover of Kraftwerk’s 1974 album, Autobahn, was based, and Cyprien Gaillard’s acclaimed 3D installation, Night Life, from 2015. The mutual influences between music and art will be illustrated with examples by Albert Oehlen and Scooter, Thomas Scheibitz and the Melvins, as well as Daniel Blumberg. Photographs and video works by Andrea Stappert, Sven Marquardt, Andreas Gursky, The KLF, Mark Leckey, and Bettina Pousttchi will lend the book a documentary dimension. The book is narratively underpinned by numerous background interviews that Max Dax conducted with the participants in HYPER! over the past thirty years. Max Dax was editor-in-chief from 2007 to 2010 of Spex, a famous German music magazine, well known in the scene as the organ of the punk and new wave scenes. Dirk Luckow has been the General Director of the Deichtorhallen Hamburg since 2009. He graduated in 1996 with a dissertation on Joseph Beuys and the American Anti-Form-Art. Luckow has since worked at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Württembergische Kunstverein in Stuttgart. He also worked as project manager for visual arts at the Siemens Arts Program in Munich, before he became Director of the Kunsthalle zu Kiel from 2002 to 2009. Immer anders, immer gleich. Ein Versuch über Kunst und Systeme Kat. Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur Edited by Lynn Kost

During the 1960s, the art world’s interest in systems grew quite exponentially, running parallel to the social upheavals and the fundamentally critical view of the system held by thinkers of the era. Rather more consequential, from today’s point of view, were the technological advances: the development of cybernetics, communication networks, and computer systems that turned the exchange of information into an important social and economic factor. This exhibition and this publication consider art of the 1960s and early 1970s with regard to systems thinking, con- ceiving it as communication and critique of the system. The works formally used the principles of systems thinking to debate content; the viewers had to take up position both spatially and intellectually and thus turned into significant parts of the works. Fifty years later, systems thinking is more critical than ever. This exhibition and publication show representative works of the 1960s and 1970s in combination with contemporary art that ex- amines important issues regarding the nature of data processing, information distortion, and system compatibility. Digital systems and software are as much tools for these contemporary artists as the principles of systemized thinking. They frequently address just this dependency on systems and codes and thus make their mode of operation visible. The book and the exhibition Always Different, Always the Same form an open art-historical reference system and provide a variety of cross-references between the different artworks and decades. Lynn Kost was from 2004 to 2011 artistic director of the Fumet- to – International Comix Festival in Lucerne, before he moved to the Swiss Museum Allerheilingen in Schaffhausen and to Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur. Here he curated in 2018 the show Always Different, Always the Same. Kost has since moved to Kunstmu- seum Winterthur, where he is responsible for the program of contemporary art. Modell-Naturen in der zeitgenössischen Fotografie / Models of Nature in Contemporary Photography Edited by Christine Jádi and Christiane Stahl

The exhibition Models of Nature in Contemporary Photography explores the boundaries between construct and reality, between the artificial and the natural, confronting us as viewers with the issues of manipulation, imitation, and our own perceptions. The spectrum of works on view ranges from images of so-called “pure nature” to the unnatural, including nature in the urban realm and as a backdrop for historical events. The aestheticization of nature in art and its reformatting into an artistic composition are at the center of the artistic approaches of the works. Even though these images deal with illusions, mimetic deceptions, they are no less real than replicated reality. The model invites us to a parallel world where time seems to stand still—a world that we investi- gate, question, and wonder at, a place where we can always get lost, especially since it offers an alternate experience to the loud, fast, and often overwhelming world around us. Christine Jádi studied art history and American studies at the Humboldt University Berlin and the University of Fine Arts Berlin. Since 2011 she has worked as a research coordinator and archive manager at the Alfred Ehrhardt Foundation Berlin. Christiane Stahl studied art history and the science of theater and film in Paris and Berlin. She served as an academic assistant at the Deutsche Historische Museum Berlin, the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, and the Galerie Karsten Greve. She went on to become Director of the Alfred Ehrhardt Stiftung Köln and later the Deputy Chair- person at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie. The New Photography Athol McCredie

In this handsome book, leading photography curator Athol McCredie tells the story of the beginnings of contemporary photography—also known as art photography—in New Zealand. Through interviews with photographers Gary Baigent, Richard Collins, John Daley, John Fields, Max Oettli, John B. Turner, Len Wesney, and Ans Westra, and accompanied by an outstanding introductory essay, McCredie shows how the breakthrough ap- proach of personal documentary photography created a new field of photography in New Zealand that was not simply illustrative, but rather spoke for itself and in its own language. Athol McCredie is the photography curator at New Zealand’s Te Papa museum, where he has worked since 2001. Temples and Tombs The Sacred and Monumental Architecture of Craig Hamilton Ellis Woodman

With an essay by Ellis Woodman that sets Hamilton’s work within a rich historical context, this book details six exquisite buildings categorized as works of sacred and monumental archi- tecture. Three are Roman Catholic chapels, designed for country estates; two are mausoleums designed for London cemeteries; and one is a private bath house—the sole secular building, but one with close formal relationships to the other featured designs on account of its conception, in architectural terms, as a temple. These projects, in terms of their function, cost, and reliance on preindustrial craft skills—including a longstanding and close collaboration with Scottish sculptor Sandy Stoddart—are far removed from the mainstream of twenty-first-century building The Chapel of Christ the Redeemer at Culham: Alexander production. Craig Hamilton, an architect who first developed a Stoddart’s statue of Christ the Redeemer, in the sanctuary. fascination for classical culture in his native South Africa, has Photo: Paul Highnam developed an approach to architecture that is very much in the tradition of Charles Robert Cockerell, who used classical forms as a rich source for inspiration, which he freely modified and set in an unorthodox combination to create a vital contemporary architecture. His work presents a significant challenge to the constrained field of expression within which most contemporary architecture operates and, more convincingly than any architect now working, Hamilton has demonstrated the continued capacity of the classical language to serve as the basis of an architecture that is personal and experimental, yet rich in shared meaning. Ellis Woodman is the director of the Architecture Foundation. 20/20 Twenty Great Houses of the Twentieth Century John Pardey

Ordered chronologically, and global in scope, this book provides an account of modern architecture through the lens of twenty of the most influential houses built over the past century. By telling the stories of these houses, the book is a fascinating biography of some of the greatest modern architects. John Pardey exam- ines the groundbreaking ideas and sensitivity to detailing and materials in houses designed by the likes of Gerrit Rietveld, Le Corbusier, Adolf Loos, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Giuseppe Terragni, Alvar Aalto, Charles and Ray Eames, and Os- car Niemeyer—seeking to uncover the lessons they can offer for architects practicing today. 20/20 tells the story of the client, the architect, the house, and the events around the construction of each dwelling during the turbulent twentieth century. It offers a fascinating look at great architects in which revelations are found in their most intimate projects. John Pardey is a leading architect and the recipient of several RIBA Awards and the 2013 Gold Medal for Architecture in Wales. His practice, John Pardey Architects (JPA), was named one of Britain’s top six residential design practices in the Sunday Times in April 2014. He has taught at the South Bank, PCL, Can- terbury and Portsmouth Schools of Architecture. Collett-Zarzycki The Tailored Home Dominic Bradbury

Richly illustrated with beautiful photographs and drawings, Collett-Zarzycki: The Tailored Home provides a thoughtful and comprehensive account of how this atelier has built an extraor- dinary portfolio of residential work over the last 30 years. From London town houses to Tuscan retreats to new build vacation homes on the French Riviera, Collett-Zarzycki’s work encompass- es architecture, interiors and landscape design, with an emphasis on refined spaces, crafted materials and bespoke furniture. This rare capacity to span the entire spectrum of design has given rise to homes of great cohesion and charm, as well as originality and individuality. With backgrounds in the art world and engineering, as well as formative years in both Africa and the UK, Anthony Collett and Andrzej Zarzycki bring a wealth of experience to bear upon projects that are defined by their unique sense of character, developed in response to site, setting and the considered needs of their clients. Whether the commission is for a penthouse interi- or, a town house reinvention, or a new build country or coastal home, there are common themes to their work, with an emphasis on craft, materiality, attention to detail and timeless elegance, fusing contemporary living with Neoclassical, Arts & Crafts and Modernist influences. The book offers insights into the influences and inspiration behind the firm’s work, into founding partners Collett and Zarzycki’s unique collaborative working practices, their ability to work across a range of forms and scales and their use of contemporary artisan craftsmen in the bespoke fixtures, fittings and furniture which are integral to many of their projects. Writer and journalist Dominic Bradbury has produced more than a dozen books on design, architecture, and interiors, including the bestselling Mid-Century Modern Complete, The Iconic House, and its successor, The Iconic Interior. Arina Daehnick Architectural Portraits. The Mies Project Dirk Lohan and Michelangelo Sabatino

The Berlin-based photo artist Arina Dähnick follows in the foot- steps of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in her study of city life and urbanity, the contrasts of inside and outside, of blurriness and focus, reflections and mirror images, and plays with the viewer’s perception. She discovered van der Rohe’s architecture in the fall of 2012, when, after a thunderstorm, she perceived the Neue Nationalgalerie in a both fascinating and paradoxical spatial experience of boundless vastness—and a simultaneous feeling of being held. From then on she photographed the building under various conditions until its closure in 2015, following in Mies van der Rohe’s footsteps from Berlin to Brno, from Chicago to New York. She captured his most famous buildings—including the Villa Tugendhat, the Seagram Building, and the Lake Shore Drive Apartments—in impressive photo series that conveys her creative inspiration as well as the fascinating spatial experience of the architecture itself. Architectural Portraits. The MIES Project will be presented at the S. R. Crown Hall and the Goethe Institut in 2019, in parallel with this year’s edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The exhibition will subsequently travel to Barcelona, Brno, and Berlin. Concise Guides to Planning Series The Urban Design Process Philip Black and Taki Sonbli

This useful guide sets out clearly the urban-design process in practice, from initial site analysis through consultation, design development, and design delivery across a range of scales within the built environment. It provides a clear overview of the role that urban design and urban designers play in shaping and creating places today and how designers conceive and deliver contextually responsive, high-quality design solutions. Beginning with a brief history of contemporary urban design, the book tracks urban design’s roots in architecture and planning and identifies how and why it has emerged as a separate discipline. It then sets out the principles and key criteria that underpin urban design and explains how urban designers interpret policy, baseline data, and graphical analysis to present an understanding of place and space. Following the urban design process through concept development/strategic framework provisions to public consultation and final design, the book discusses subjects such as costing, phasing, construction, post-construction monitoring, and maintenance. It describes the complexity of project management in delivering large-scale projects, such as master planning and major public-realm and civic schemes. Illustrated with a series of international case studies, the book concludes by highlighting a number of growing urban challenges facing cities today, discuss- ing how urban design can play a leading role in tackling issues connected with climate change, globalization, and technological advancements, as well as how it can respond positively to the current and future needs of society. Philip Black is a lecturer in urban design at the University of Manchester. Taki Sonbli is an urban design technician at the University of Manchester. Concise Guides to Planning Series Planning and Real Estate Brendan Williams

Real estate development is a highly regulated, high-value indus- try: this book examines its efficiency, its role in shaping the built environment and its relationship with planning and planners. It considers issues such as the role of the government and property markets and whether it is valid to blame planning systems for dysfunctional housing markets. It also provides a useful ground- ing in development companies’ decision-making and how the property-development process, financing, and pricing systems op- erate in a market economy. It explains the UK’s Development Led system and Development Appraisals, before comparing various alternative international systems to see how they treat, or priori- tize, real estate and development interests. It asks which policies might lead to high levels of speculative activity and if so, whether this is sustainable, in political, economic, or environmental terms. It looks to the future to see whether the planning system can prevent future property bubbles and identifies key lessons and implications for planning and property markets. Brendan Williams has taught and researched at a number of universities in North America and Europe for more than twenty years and is currently the director of the Urban Environment Re- search Project at University College Dublin, where he lectures in urban development, urban economics, and comparative planning systems. His principal research themes are urban development and policy frameworks in Ireland and internationally, as well as applied research on the role of property markets in economic development. Concise Guides to Planning Series Why Plan? Theory for Practitioners Graham Houghton and Iain White

Why do we plan? Who decides how and where we plan and what we should value? How do theories and ideologies filter down into real policies and plans that affect our lives? Written in a deliber- ately practitioner-friendly manner, this useful guide answers these questions and reveals planning theories to be simply new ideas that can help us see the world differently. Thinking about them enables us to take a step back to appreciate the wider context. The guide discusses the value of planning; how planning ratio- nale has changed over time; and whether we have too much, too little, or just the wrong kind of planning. It then sets out twen- ty-five key concepts central to professional practice, ranging from participation and complexity to post-politics and state theory, from risk and resilience to governmentality, from assemblage to ecosystems and sustainability. Concise Guides to Planning Series Children and Planning Claire Freeman and Andrea Cook

Planning is central to ensuring that children and young people live in safe and secure places, and that they are included and can be active. There are few aspects of planners’ work that do not directly impact children, from designing city centers, to imple- menting policies that will minimize the environmental effects of industrial practices. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) requires planners to consider children in matters affecting them and affirms that they have the right to be heard on such matters, and there is a consensus that it is important to attempt to engage children and young people in the planning process. The main question is, how? This book provides a range of international case studies illustrating good practice. It offers a variety of tools and techniques that have proved to be successful and discusses the work that needs to be done to enable planners to respond more effectively. It identifies key areas of con- cern with reference to the built environment and, more precisely, to planning theory and practice. Claire Freeman is a professor of geography at the University of Otago in New Zealand. Her research is in environmental planning, and she works on planning with children, urban nature, and community planning. Concise Guides to Planning Series Planning, Transport and Accessibility Carey Curtis

How do you plan for both transportation and urban develop- ment in an integrated way? How do you assess the effectiveness of infrastructure investment from an accessibility perspective, and who should do what to ensure implementation? In seeking to answer such questions, this book argues that a focus on accessi- bility is key to the successful integration of urban planning and transportation planning, as both seek to provide citizens with access to opportunities. With an underlying principle of achiev- ing sustainable development, urban planners, politicians, and community advocates are now demanding a new approach to planning urban areas and transportation networks that provides for accessibility, rather than assuming mobility, especially by pri- vate car. This book shows how, and why, we can successfully plan for sustainable accessibility through urban development planning and transportation planning practices. Employing a multi-dimen- sional perspective, sustainable accessibility is considered through the lens of different residents and their daily needs. Through the lens of a “mobility pyramid,” the book studies three different spatial scales: metropolitan, town centers, and neighborhoods. There is a strong focus on their qualities of place and on gover- nance, considering who should take action, and how processes of implementation influence the effectiveness of design approaches. This innovative multi-dimensional perspective reframes tradition- al approaches and offers the reader a look at the bigger picture of what is required to plan for sustainable accessibility, while at the same time outlining the specific details that are necessary for its implementation. Carey Curtis is Professor of City Planning and Transport at Curtin University, Australia and Guest Professor at the University of Lund, Sweden. She has published extensively in the areas of travel behaviour, transport and land-use planning, accessibility planning, and institutional barriers to sustainable urban development. Concise Guides to Planning Series Conserving the Historic Environment John Pendlebury and Jules Brown

Why do we decide that parts of our built environment are worth the special attention that heritage designation brings? How can the character of conservation areas and other historic places continue to evolve to provide new housing, release their econom- ic potential, and enhance communities? What are the principles to understand when judging the impact of new development or alterations to our significant heritage assets? And what about the future of conservation? In seeking to answer such questions, this book provides a grounding for planners and other related pro- fessionals in the key concepts associated with conservation and how to apply them in practice. It begins by setting out the values and principles that underpin the current conservation planning systems, explaining their historic context and evolution, and crit- ically examining these systems and possible counter-approaches. Illustrated by a wide range of examples of historic and modern buildings, conservation areas, world heritage sites, parks, and gar- dens, it then focuses on decision-making and the management of change. It discusses how the conservation of the historic environ- ment has become increasingly linked to other social and economic policy objectives before identifying key lessons and implications for future policy development and planning practice. John Pendlebury is a professor of urban conservation at the Glob- al Urban Research Unit at Newcastle University. Prior to entering academia, he worked as a town planner and urban conservation- ist for ten years. Jules Brown is chair of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation, North Branch, and a conservation and planning manager at the North of England Civic Trust. Persian Textiles. The Ramezani Family Collection Persische Textilien. Die Sammlung Ramezani Marie-Louise Nabholz-Kartaschoff

Persian textiles from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century display a multitude of techniques as well as many differ- ent kinds of illustrations. Besides, they are used in a number of different ways. As the subtitle indicates, they range from precious brocades (Zar-baft) to printed cloths (Qalamkar), from opulent oriental floral patterns to narrative depictions, from hangings, covers, and garments to ones that are used for very special purposes—for example, cloths on which ceremonial meals are served and ones employed as chair and saddle covers, or animal trappings. In this richly illustrated publication, Marie-Louise Nabholz-Kartaschoff presents examples from a highly diversified private collection. Marie-Louise Nabholz-Kartaschoff received a PhD in ethnol- ogy from Basel University. From 1968 until 2003, she led the Department of Asian Textiles of the Museum der Kulturen in Basel. She was responsible for the custodial care of its eminent collections and organized exhibitions; did fieldwork in Mallorca, South China, Thailand, India, and Indonesia; and authored many publications on various topics concerning textiles.
