The Department of the Navy ap- proved, signed and fi nalized its deci- sion for basing of the Marine F-35B Dec. 9. On the East Coast, the decision will put eight operational squadrons of the F-35B at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., and three opera- tional squadrons and a pilot training center at MCAS Beaufort, S.C. That would equate to up to 128 of the new aircraft at MCAS Cherry Point and up to 88 new aircraft at MCAS Beaufort. “This is great news for MCAS Cherry Point and Eastern North Caro- lina,” said Col. Philip Zimmerman, Cherry Point’s commanding offi cer. “We know that Eastern North Caro- lina is a great place to train our Marine aviators thanks to its unique and state of the art training facilities and ranges, and thanks to the fantastic support we receive from the our neighbors in the local communities.” The current schedule would begin replacing F/A-18 aircraft at MCAS PHOTO COURTESY OF LOCKHEED MARTIN Beaufort as early as 2014 and would The Department of the Navy announced Dec. 9 that Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point will serve as the home of eight squadrons begin replacing Cherry Point’s AV-8B of the new F-35B Lightning II. Dec. 11, 2009, my grandfather, Carl H. Bolken, passed away after many years of battling Alzheimer’s disease. Six days later I stood at his funeral in my dress blues, just four months after becoming a Marine. My grandfather was paid tribute with military honors during his funeral because of his two years served in the Army. Among family and friends, I saluted my fallen grandfa- ther, humbled to share the bond of military service with him, especially as I observed color guardsmen fold his commemorative fl ag. I was handed the fl ag afterward, and I held it dearly like the fi rst time I held my son. I felt a sense of unworthiness because of what my grandfather meant to our entire fam- ily. My dad, my grandfather’s son, assured me that my grandfather would want me to bear the fl ag in his honor. “That is your fl ag,” my dad said, while he grasped my shoulder with watering eyes. To uphold the trust my family put in my hands, this Dec. 11, a year to the day after my grandfather passed away, I raised the fl ag in his honor at Marine Corps Air

SPECIAL TO THE WINDSOCK MCAS CHERRY POINT During the holidays, police departments around the country strengthen security to protect citizens and businesses. But we often forget that crime in neighborhoods also increases. Thieves start canvassing the streets in search of packages left in cars, unsecured homes and families away for the holidays. With the rise in internet purchases during the holiday season, thefts of packages being delivered or left at your front door is also becom- ing more and more common. It is necessary to take some precautions at home to avoid becoming a target of crime. Antiterrorism and law enforcement offi cials offer some tips to re- duce your chances of being hit at home by thieves this Christmas season and all year long:

1. Conceal wrapped presents from outside view. 6. Don’t leave checkbooks, wallets and cash lying around the house.

5. Make sure to lock all doors and windows every time you leave the house. 10. Whenever possible take or update your home inventory by taking pictures or videos and keeping a list of serial numbers.

Remember that crime increases during the Christmas season. Don’t let thieves ruin your holidays. Don’t give criminals an opportunity. Keep these tips in mind as you rush around and make some time to take extra precautions for a better Christmas with your family and friends.
