Throughout its 48-year history, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has been ranked by the American Symphony Orch estra League among the 30 major symphony orchestras in North America. During the 1970-71 season, the Orchestra performed more than 100 programs, not only in the Greater Rochester area but also in selected cities throughout New York State. A key to the support of the Philharmonic is the Rochester Civic Music Association, which annually enrolls nearly 10,000 members and qualifies as the nation's largest symphonic music organization. "TOGETHER" will be recorded by Mercury Records sound tech nicians at the Saturday evening performance. Following these performances, Public Broadcast Service will video tape "TOGETHER" for national network presentation in the near future. Still photos: R. E. Smith, Louis Marinaccio, Don Maggio Special motion picture sequences: Richard D. Young, Michael Conklin, Jerry Joseph Audio: Richard P. Zicari Cover Design : R. E. Smith "TOGETHER" posters are on sale in the Main Lobby and the Balcony Lobby for $2.00 each. Proceeds will go to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, for future presentations. CHUCK MANGIONE, who is presently an Associate in Ensembles at the Eastman School of Music and director of the Eastman Jazz Ensemble, a Mercury Recording Artist and leader of his own quartet performing on flugelhorn and piano. His extensive music schooling began when he was eight and progressed until he graduated from Eastman School of Music where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1963 with a major in Music Edu cation. He continued his education by studying arranging re cently under the direction of Rayburn Wright, Professor of Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media at the Eastman School. Mr. Mangione, whose works are drawn from all forms and types of music, was further recognized in 1969 when the Sym phony of the New World performed his "The Feel of a Vision" at the Lincoln Center in New York City. In 1965, he conducted the Civic Orchestra at the Eastman Theatre in a benefit concert for the Rochester Musicians Association. Mangione later ap peared as trumpet soloist with the Syracuse Symphony. He also traveled extensively writing and performing for a number of jazz groups including the Jazz Messengers, Jazz Brothers, and the Maynard Ferguson Band. As a result of those accomplishments, Chuck Mangione is listed in the Encyclopedia of Jazz. In 1968, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester com missioned Mangione to compose a Jazz Mass which was per formed at the Nazareth Art Center. BAT McGRATH and DON POTTER, Rochester's "folk heroes," are currently performing at many of the colleges and schools in the Northeast. Their appearance on the David Frost TV Show, their record album, Introducing Bat McGrath and Don Potter, as well as their part in the "Friends & Love" concert last season, has helped spread their music to much of the U.S. Tonight Bat and Don will be featured as an integral part of the concert. GAP MANGIONE, whose trio may be the most popular musical group in upstate New York, will be featured on piano this evening. Gap's deft piano with its colorful sounds lures many Rochesterians to one of our finest nightclubs. His musical background and training span the last 10 years starting when he and his brother Chuck formed the well-known Jazz Brothers. Later Gap studied at Syracuse University where he received his degree. In addition to his Trio work, Gap has a number of recordings to his credit. The most recent album be ing the popular Diana and the Autumn Wind where his piano work reached its full expression. During the past year, Gap has hosted his own TV Show, "Gap's Generation." STANLEY WATSON, virtuosic guitarist on this evening's program, studied in Madrid under Aureo Hererro. He also attended the well known summer school at the Academia Musicale Chigiana in Sienna, Italy with Pablo Casals and Andres Segovia. Although born in Canada, Mr. Watson spent most of his early life in London, playing in nightclubs or on radio. (Mr. Watson's guitar was custom made by Heins Rossner.) GERRY NIEWOOD is well known to Rochesterians as a member of the Chuck Man gione Quartet for the past two and a half years, and for his solo appearances in several Arranger's Hoi iday Concerts, Kaleidoscope, and last year's Friend 's and Love concert. Gerry is a 1970 graduate of the Eastman School of Music where he received his Bachelor of Music. He also holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Buffalo where he graduated in 1965. While a student at the Eastman, he was a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble and the Eastman Jazz Ensemble. Gerry, a former member of the Buddy Rich Band, has also appeared as soloist with the Memphis State University Stage Band and Orchestra, and the Canan daigua Academy Wind Ensemble. ROBERT E. SMITH, creator of the effective stage lighting and visual background for tonight's concert, owns and operates Studio Seven with his associ ate Joe Hendrick, who also assists him this evening. Bob and Joe "seek to create a visual environment that en hances the total experience of a Chuck Mangione perform ance by the edition of compat able images and effects." The multi-media presentations of Kaleidoscope, Friends & Love, and Freddie's Walkin, were also created by this local ar tist/designer. • An Evening of Magic: Live at the Hollywood Bowl Press Release
1 CHUCK MANGIONE’S AN EVENING OF MAGIC: LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL CAPTIVATES AUDIENCE AGAIN ON DEBUT CD RELEASE “There wasn’t an empty seat at the Hollywood Bowl Sunday night – in the 18,000-seat amphitheatre, or its ample stage – as Chuck Mangione, his quartet and 65 of Hollywood’s finest demonstrated why jazz and rock are living together so compatibly.” --Los Angeles Times “Mangione held the audience spellbound with a dazzling display of significant music.” --Los Angeles Herald Examiner The July 16, 1978 concert was billed as “Chuck Mangione Feels So Good At The Hollywood Bowl.” It was the hottest, hippest ticket in town, the one-time-only performance sold out for weeks. Backed by a large orchestra and his own band, one of the most popular jazz-funk- pop artists of the ‘70s would sum up the decade with an electrifying, upbeat and uplifting set. Recorded at the height of Mangione’s fame, with “Feels So Good” busting up the charts, An Evening Of Magic: Live At The Hollywood Bowl, produced by Mangione, was originally issued June 8, 1979 on A&M Records as a double album. (There was so much music in the concert that the performance began at 7 p.m., in broad daylight.) On October 19, 1999, An Evening Of Magic: Live At The Hollywood Bowl (Hip-O Records), digitally remastered, will be made available on CD for the first time, and in a two disc package. Mangione began as a jazz bebopper and played with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and the big bands of Woody Herman and Maynard Ferguson but his commercial success came with crossover jazz.

  • CHUCK MANGIONE: MONEY ISN't EVERYTHING by Eric Myers ______
CHUCK MANGIONE: MONEY ISN'T EVERYTHING by Eric Myers ____________________________________________________________ [This feature appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on January 29, 1981] s one of the most successful jazz musicians, commercially, in the United States, the flugelhorn player Chuck Mangione, 40, need never A work again. In a heady period during 1978-79, he accumulated an illustrious collection of Grammys, gold and platinum records, and awards which included Jazz Artist of the Year, Instrumentalist of the Year, Top Fusion Artist, Top Producer, Top Instrumentalist, International Jazz Award winner and Outstanding Jazz Artist. Chuck Mangione: an illustrious collection of Grammys, gold and platinum records, and awards…PHOTO CREDIT EDMOND THOMMEN Yet Mangione largely discounts this kind of acclaim and success. "To me, success started when I fell in love with music," he said yesterday. "I don't remember anything but music and baseball since I was 10. "My attitude has always been the same: let me play the music I believe in, and all I want to do is survive. I can probably go out for the rest of my life and do 1 exactly what I did last year every night and make a lot of money doing it but, musically speaking, I would die." Chuck Mangione stresses that his roots are firmly in jazz, and believes that there is a new spirit abroad in American music, with many great jazz players re- emerging, playing as well as ever. In Los Angeles last week living proof was found in the first ‘Chuck Mangione alumni jam session and sausage roast’, in which he brought together for reunion a host of musicians who had worked with him over the past 25 years.

Hank's Symphony (Hank Mobley) 4:36 One of the best groups to emerge during the period when modern jazz decided that swing was not only not old-fashioned but a highly desirable commodity is the Jazz Messengers, a co-operative unit organized in early 1955. The musicians in this album form the personnel which has borne the Messenger banner during most of the unit's career. They demonstrate, in these free-wheeling performances, that small-combo jazz can be arranged with plenty of room for improvisation, and with carefully worked-out ideas to set the group in a different setting in each number. The material in this collection consists of two rarely-heard ballads and five originals (by Horace Silver and Hank Mobley). Variety is the keynote here, even though the group contains only five musicians and all the performances are more than usually long. Frequent and varied use of a Latin beat helps make some of this possible; more often, it is in the ensemble writing and the dynamic improvising of the soloists.
