Contents Background ................................................................................................................................... 3 Black Sea Red Data List ................................................................................................................. 4 2 Background The Black Sea Red Data Book published in 1999 contains a preliminary list of species in need for conservation actions, which were introduced in the Annex II (List of Species of the Black Sea Importance) of the Black Sea Biodiversity and Landscape Conservation Protocol, signed in Sofia (Bulgaria) in 2002 and enforced in 2011. There is an urgent need to update and publish the regional Red Data Book and although the list compiled and presented below refers to the marine invertebrates only, it represents a starting point in this process. The Red Data List of the marine invertebrates is based on the National Red Data Books of the countries around the Black Sea and contains 80 species assessed against IUCN criteria and categories. Most of them are crustaceans and molluscs (95%). The presentation is quite heterogenous and there is a need to harmonize the categorization of species in such a way to identify their regional conservation status. As for the moment not all species were included in distinct categories, additional effort should be paid in this direction. 3 Black Sea Red Data List Phylum PORIFERA Class DEMOSPONGIAE 1.
