Science hasa unique role in the curriculum because it offers opportunities for all childrento explore and to discover the what, the how, and the why of the worldaround them. The science program is basedon the concept that learning occurs when the learner attemptsto solve a problem which he finds meaning- ful.Science: Grade 5provides the teacher with specific materialsand suggestions for organizing effectivelearning experiences in the science area in harmony with this concept. Both scienceknowledge and science processes are stressed. Significant findings from nationalprojects have been incorporated. Among thenew features which merit special atten- tion are the evaluative activitieswhich follow each of the major topics. In behalf of the schoolsystem I wish to express my appreciationto the Bureau of CurriculumDevelopment, the Office of Science Educa- tion, superintendents, directors,elementary science coordinators, andto the hundreds of teachers and supervisorswho have made this publication possible by tryouts in the classroom,by designing of materials, and by their participation in the preparationof this handbook. Lloyd, then Acting Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum, as ajoint venture of the Office of Elementary Schools, Truda T.Weil, Assistant Superintendent; the Bureau of Curriculum Development, William H. Bristow, Assistant Superintendent; and the Office of Science Education, Samuel Schenberg, Director. The preparation of this handbook was a cooperative enterprisewhich enlisted the efforts of hundreds of teachers and supervisors in theEle- mentary Science Revision Project. Julius Schwartz, Consultant in Science of the Bureau ofCurriculum Development, was the principal researcher and writerforScience: Grade5, and chairman of the Revision Committee. Simon Shulmancooperated on the art work. vi DEVELOPMENT OF THESCIENCE PROGRAM FOR THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLSOF NEW YORK CITY The scienceprogram for the elementary schoolsstems from a series of projects that have beenunder way for almost two decadesto give the study of science fullstatus in the elementary curriculum inNew York City. One project, originatingin two districts, resulted in thepreparation of Science in Everyday Living(Curriculum Bulletin No. 6,1947-48 Series). This publication,reporting early childhood activitiesand ex- periences in the classroom,was distributed to all elementary schools in New York City. Material developed in otherdistricts for the intermediategrades was published asSource Materials in ElementaryScience(Curriculum Bul- letin No. 3, 1949-1950Series). This publication, outliningscience materials, experiences, andunits, was also made availableto all schools. To meet the need forbroader consideration of the overallK-12 sci- ence program, exploratory studies andconferences were conducted in 1950, culminating in theappointment and work ofa science advisory panel which establisheda set of goals and principles later acceptedas a working program by the CurriculumCouncil. Another step was taken in 1950when the Curriculum Councilof the Board of Education designateda Science Advisory Committee toco- ordinate the development ofa 12-year science program for the New York City Schools. This committeeconsisted of: *William H. Bristow, Director, Bureau of CurriculumResearch (now the Bureau ofCur- riculum Development), Chairman;Alfred D. Beck, Science Supervisor, Junior High Schools; FrancisX. Carlin, Science Supervisor,Vocational High Schools; Harry Milgrom,Science Supervisor, ElementarySchools; Samuel Schenberg, ScienceSupervisor, High Schools; JacobH.
