One more GP in the big city doesn’t do much but one more GP somewhere where there aren’t too many can make more of a difference.

I just love the Murrumbidgee region because it has some of those urban comforts I’m used to, but it still has that community feel. People care about each other, you don’t have that in other places. I like that you’ve got a huge variety, you’ve got farmers coming in from out of town, you’ve got city folk, really a great diversity in the population which is really exciting." WHY GO WEST?

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Going rural is a unique and rewarding training experience. Who knows how long you might decide to stay? Serving a rural community even for a short time can make a big difference. Even if you do decide to move on, you can do so knowing you made an important contribution to a community in need during your time there.

BUILD YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Training in a supervised setting is a unique opportunity to gain new skills in a safe environment. With fewer specialist services readily accessible in some rural areas, patient presentations are often more diverse than those encountered in large metropolitan centres.

Make the most of this opportunity – experience the diversity of rural general practice and build an extensive knowledge base that you can use anywhere.

BE PART OF A TEAM

Today, most rural practices have teams of doctors, nurses and other health professionals working together, providing collegiate and supportive working environments for you to work and train within.

SUBSPECIALISE

One of the great appeals of general practice is career diversity and opportunity. Opportunities to sub-specialise, provide holistic care across multiple settings, and explore new areas of interest are often enhanced in a rural setting.

Aboriginal health training posts are GP training positions undertaken in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs). ACCHSs are Aboriginal organisations that provide primary health care and related services to their local Aboriginal community.

ACCHSs are community controlled organisations, overseen by a locally elected board of management.

They deliver holistic and culturally appropriate health care using a multidisciplinary team approach to ensure the best possible outcome for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

DR SALLY JOHNSON "I went to university in Sydney and once I had the opportunity I jumped across to the rural school and spent my remaining three years of uni in Wagga Wagga.

From there I’ve been working at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital for the last three years and I’m finally starting my GP training, and Cootamundra it is!

I’ve also spent the last 12 months doing my obstetrics diploma, I’m just about finished and when it’s all signed off, I’d love to practice obstetrics in Cootamundra as well.

It provides the perfect opportunity to continue care after the pregnancy, looking after a new person, and maybe supporting the mum through later pregnancies as well." Explore Western NSW | 31  TEMORA

DR GAYATHRI KOSAKA "I grew up in southern India and in my final year of medical school I married, and my husband and I decided to come to Australia.

We had moved to Griffith, as I was working at Griffith Base Hospital before I applied for GP training, so GP training here in Griffith has worked out very well.

I decided to become a GP as I could practice medicine with continuity of care, and also practice obstetrics - my field of interest.

Being a small town, people know you better and when I meet them on the street, I feel rewarded for my work.

I enjoy working and living in Griffith, it’s easy to live here with little children, and I can drive around and not get into a traffic jam!" Explore Western NSW | 35 GP SYNERGY
