Letter from the Chairman After more years than I care to remember, I am finally bowing out as Chairman of the VPCA. It has been a long and interesting road and I have become involved in issues well beyond my expectations, from complaints about slugs crossing the roads of Knightwood to the placement of park benches. I have enjoyed meeting and speaking with a vast number of residents, but more importantly, I have enjoyed working with the large number of volunteers who have given their time over the years to make the Association a successful enterprise. I would love to fill the page with a list of thanks to everyone, but as your community association we are always trying to keep costs down, including the printing costs of the Voice! However, I cannot let this opportunity pass to specifically thank one member of my team. Malcolm Wallach agreed to become the Treasurer of the VPCA many years ago. Quite frankly, the accounts were a mess, but through hard work and sheer doggedness, he turned our fortunes around. Despite many other personal projects, he also started to undertake all the necessary jobs in the Centre such as the management of health and safety, the redecoration programme and the maintenance of the building. Malcolm also plans to leave the committee and a replacement treasurer has been nominated. Thank you so much Malcolm for being an amazing colleague and a friend. Finally, my replacement has also been nominated. Sarah Roberts is the new Chairman and I wish her and the new committee all the best for the future. Val Boden

4 IN MEMORY

Harold Robert Glover

1920—2017

My last task as Chair of the VPCA is to sadly announce the death of one of our long serving committee members, Harold Glover. He also served at the same time on the Parish Council, showing great community spirit.

In 2009, the VPCA replaced a bench behind the Community Centre, entitled Harold's Bench, in recognition of his work for the community. Harold was instrumental in arranging for the original placement of a bench on this walkway and used it as a rest stop many times.

On a more personal note, Harold will be remembered as a perfect gentleman with impeccable manners, a military bearing and a ready twinkle in his eyes! He brightened up every session of armchair aerobics in St Francis Church with his comedic banter and as the oldest veteran in the church on Remembrance Sunday, he would insist on standing to attention during every hymn despite not being able to walk.

Our condolences go to Dorothy and his children Roger and Carolyn.

I appreciate that The Voice is a useful vehicle for airing local grievances. But for a change can we say a big thank you to those whose hard work has given us such a lovely display of daffodils on our grass verges. It is a pleasure to drive around and we are fortunate to be able to live in such a pleasant area. I look forward to displays of wild flowers which I hope we shall get as we did last summer.

Whitlam Close resident.

Parking issues in Montgomery Way:

I'm absolutely amazed at the way the council has treated residents. The council should be there for the benefit of the people and not as an authoritarian state to dictate to residents.

The Corporate Park should not be given a licence to operate unless it has AT LEAST as many car parking spaces as it has workers. Simple.

Then there would be no need for any office parkers to go to Montgomery Way. Or for them to park up the hill from Asda on the grass verges.

The actions of the council are disgusting.

Another unhappy resident

Parking Permits for Trades Vehicles

Last week a trades vehicle got a parking ticket for carrying out work for one of the residents in the vicinity of Montgomery Way during the restricted parking times. Having contacted the council it would appear that:

For Eastleigh Borough Council residents:

If a trades vehicle is visiting your property and there is not a driveway to facilitate their vehicle you will need to obtain a dispensation from Joanne MeGarvey, Parking Management, Eastleigh Borough Council. Trades vehicles can pre book a permit for £15 per day or £25 if less than 7 days notice given. The dispensation will need to be fully displayed on the dashboard of the vehicle as they will be monitored.

It just keeps getting worse!! Not only can we no longer have visitors but we also have to pay if we need work doing by a third party!

6 A Walk From StVOLUNTEERS Denys station to NEEDED Chandlers Ford station

Start: Railway Station Finish: Chandlers Distance: 6 miles approx. Time: 2-3 hours

A walk between St Denys and Chandlers Ford via River Itchen and the with very little road walking. This walk is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. There are 4 stiles to cross. Take care when crossing any of the roads.

Leave St Denys Station on the eastern side, turn right into Adelaide Road and walk to the end and turn left into Priory Road. Follow this until you reach (A3035). Cross the road and turn right to cross the bridge on the left hand side, on reaching the other side take the footpath on the left down the slope into Cobden Meadows. Follow this path all the way through Riverside Park, keeping the river on your left. When you reach a road (Woodmill Lane) cross over and continue along the path with the river on your left and the pitch and putt course on your right. Eventually you will emerge at an old stone bridge just before the Road, turn left, crossing the river on the bridge, almost immediately turn left along a path away from the road and follow this - there is an open space and children's playground on the left.

The path becomes a pavement and then a path again as it enters woodland with houses on the right. Just before you reach a bridge over a brook, turn right and follow the path through woodland, keeping in the same northerly direction. You will emerge onto High Road (the Swaythling Arch railway bridge will be to your left). Cross over and turn left, in 30m turn right onto a path Oust before the pub) which goes alongside the Monks Brook. Follow this path, just after you cross a bridge you will emerge onto an open space, go straight across towards the road and then turn right over a stile, follow the path over another stile before turning left and going through the underpass. Go up the steps on the right and follow the path around the edge of the field emerging onto Stoneham Lane. Turn right (take care along here as there is no pavement) until you reach St Nicholas church then turn left up the drive following it until you reach a stile on the right (opposite the large building). Go over the stile and follow the path between the fields through a gate into Park.

Keep on the main path as it bears left and follow to the gate where the drive to the Golf Academy emerges. Cross the main road (Chestnut Avenue) and turn right in about 50m turn left through a cut way between houses to then go across the green into Linnet Square, then across that green to cross Nightingale Avenue and into Woodpecker Way, Follow the road to the bend and then go down the path on the right with the end house on your left before turning left to walk behind the houses along a road with the golf course on your right. At the end of the road go across the grass on your right to cross a stile onto the golf course. Keep left, cross a bridge and go up the slope on to the cycle path, Turn left under the subway and follow the cycle path to the road, cross over turn right and then immediately left into the woods. Follow the path through the woods before emerging onto Bournemouth Road, cross the road and turn right and then left into Templers Mede. Follow pavement on left past the end house onto a grass path and keep straight on (it can be muddy here) until you reach the cycle path. Continue ahead, following the cycle path crossing first Montgomery Way and then Castle Lane before crossing School Lane at the Pedestrian lights, continue along the path until it reaches a T junction (car park opposite), turn right and then follow the path all the way back to the Station. 7 School Holidays

This summer, between 5 and 28 August inclusive, fewer South West Trains services will run while work starts to extend platforms at London Waterloo. This will allow longer trains with more seats and more space for passengers.

We are investing over £800million to provide the biggest package of improvements for passengers travelling on the railway to and from London Waterloo for decades.

The number of passenger journeys on this line has more than doubled in the last twenty years to 234 million and is expected to increase by a further 40% by 2043.

There will be works on a number of weekends throughout 2017 which will also reduce the number of trains in service. To check your journey at weekends, please visit our website page https://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/plan-your- journey/planned-improvements/engineering-works/

During August, the impact on your journey will vary depending on when and where you travel but as fewer trains will be running your journey might be changed in the following ways, even if you are not travelling into London:

· The majority of stations will have fewer train services · Services and stations will be busier than usual, especially in the morning and evening peaks on weekdays · Some journeys are likely to take longer · There will be queuing systems outside some stations · A small number of stations will be closed · Other operators’ services will also be busier while passengers take alternative routes, including London Underground.

There will be changes to your journeys but we are doing everything we can to reduce inconvenience and make your journey as smooth as possible, including:

· Run longer trains throughout the day to provide more space and help you travel outside of the busiest times · Temporarily open platforms 20-24 (the former Waterloo International Terminal) to reduce some of the impact of closing platforms 1-9 · Continue to provide information in advance to help you plan your journey · Work round the clock to finish the works as quickly as possible

9 Citizen’s Advice

Q I took 7 days off work for flu and my employer won’t give me sick pay. I usually work 21 hours in a warehouse but I’m on flexible contract so my shifts moved round. I called in sick and they took me off the rota for a couple of weeks, and are saying that I won’t be paid. Is this right?

A Whatever your contract type, you’re entitled to sick pay if you meet certain rules around the length of your illness and your usual pay.

Statutory sick pay is paid from the fourth day you’d usually be working that you’re off sick. You need to normally earn £112.00 a week or more before tax, and to report your sickness according to your workplace rules like phoning in or filling in a form.

If you’d already agreed to those working hours before you took time off for illness, your employer removing you from the rota doesn’t change your rights - you’re still entitled to sick pay. Your employer may not be aware of their responsibilities, or they may even be trying to avoid paying.

The first step is to ask your employer to fill in the government Statutory Sick Pay form explaining their reasons for not paying you.

Once it’s filled in, call the number for HMRC on the form. They’ll clarify whether you’re entitled and if you are, make sure you’re paid.

If your employer won’t fill in the form, contact HMRC, who have a legal duty to solve issues around sick pay.

For more information, go to the Citizens Advice public website at www.citizensadvice.org.uk – please note you can also use the webchat option in most enquiry areas during working hours.

10 Sciatica - What you didn’t know!

Sciatica is a relatively common form of leg pain that is often misunderstood by patients. The sciatic nerve originates in the low back and then passes through the buttocks down the back of the leg. Pain involving the sciatic nerve can be felt in the buttocks, down the back of the leg or in the foot. However, the sciatic nerve can also cause other symptoms of numbness, tingling, weakness, muscle cramping or burning.

There are a number of things that can cause irritation of the sciatic nerve, for example a lumbar disc herniation (slipped disc), stenosis, or a vertebra that is not moving correctly.

Arthrtis of the spine can reduce the space where the nerves exit the spinal column, which can result in pinching of a nerve. There is also something called Piriformis Syndrome. The Piriformis muscle sits deep in your buttocks and the Sciatic nerve goes underneath (or in some people it goes through) this muscle. Tightness in this muscle can therefore also cause sciatic pain.

However not all leg pain is Sciatica. Trigger points in muscles can cause pain down to the buttock and thigh, called referred pain. There are also potentially more serious conditions that can cause leg pain, for example tumors and Cauda Equina syndrome. It is therefore important to see a health professional to get your leg pain properly diagnosed.

Chiropractic treatment can help reduce the pressure on the sciatic nerve and home exercises prescribed by your chiropractor may also be helpful.

Ice can be applied to the lower back to reduce the inflammation and NSAID’s or other pain medication recommended from your doctor can help reduce the symptoms.

If pain persists after conservative treatment, steroid injections or even surgery may be considered.

If you are experiencing low back pain or leg pain and want to make an appointment you can contact Henny Winward at Chandlers Ford Chiropractic Clinic [email protected] or visit our website www.chandlersfordchiro.co.uk (See advert on page 28) 11 Lungworm ALERT!

Lungworm, caused by Angiostrongylus vasorum is gradually becoming more common throughout the UK and Ireland. In affected dogs, clinical signs can range from a mild cough to life threatening bleeding problems.

Slugs and snails can carry the larval stage of Angiostrongylus vasorum and if dogs eat slugs and snails, they can become unwittingly infected. Some pets seem to have a taste for these garden dwellers but all dogs are at risk. Some species of slug are very small and can easily be accidentally swallowed when dogs eat grass, drink from puddles or play with toys that have been left outside. The disease is most common in young dogs that eat or play with slugs and snails.

Once swallowed, the larvae migrate to the heart where they will develop into adult worms. The adult lungworms live in the heart and the blood vessels supplying the lungs. Here they lay their eggs, which hatch into larvae and migrate into the airways of the lungs. The dog then coughs them up, swallows the larvae, sheds them in the faeces and the life cycle begins again.

Clinical signs of lungworm can be vague and variable – ranging from a cough or tiring more easily, to bruising easily, serious bleeding problems and even fitting.

Lungworm can be diagnosed by checking for the larvae in the faeces or by specialist blood tests. The treatment for dogs who are infected with lungworm involves killing the parasites plus also treating the bleeding or whatever symptoms they may have. The latter can be challenging and, sadly, many dogs have died because of the parasite. Electron micrograph of an adult lungworm

The good news is that prevention is straight forward with spot on or tablet medications, both of which are highly effective.

If you are concerned about lungworm, please have a chat to our staff who will be able to advise you on the best form of preventative treatment to protect your pets.

Most of this we take for granted but if these little things are becoming harder due to illness, operations or plain old advancement of years then we are at your service. So many families have hectic lives that sometimes the older members get forgotten or just not enough time in the day to sit and spend quality time with them. It may not just be the elderly, there may be a person who is ill or recuperating and needs a little extra help or company whilst the family are at work.

Please get in touch for a chat, we both have experience in the care business. Our names are Susan Burgess and Donna Moore.

Breeze Cycle Rides for Women: Thursdays, at 9.30am, from Chandler's Ford station.

The dates are: 18 May – Ridge Adventure – 12m Steady 22 June – Chandler's Ford Tour – 7m Easy 27 July - Southampton Common - 13m Steady 17 August – Day trip to New Forest – 30m Steady/Challenging

There are lots more Breeze Champions in the area now, with lots of other rides being organised locally over the next few months, so do keep a regular eye on the Breeze website and Facebook pages for other rides which may suit you too. https://www.letsride.co.uk/rides/ridge-adventure-2 We are delighted to announce details of this year's free Summer Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday rail bus link which the Three Rivers Community Rail Partnership will be funding between Romsey and Stockbridge.

As usual the service, operated by Community Transport Services, links up with the trains at Romsey and Mottisfont and Dunbridge Stations to allow access to the wonderful tourist attractions and beautiful countryside of the Lower Test Valley.

But this year the service has been enhanced by the provision of another bus from Stockbridge to Andover, via Danebury Hill Fort, The Museum of Army Flying, The Hawk Conservancy and Railway Station, again funded by the Three Rivers Community Rail Partnership. This Service 77 will be operated by Stagecoach Buses and will charge fares.
