In the second half of the 1970s, Brian Eno, Larry Fast, Mickey Hart, Stomu Yamashta and many other musicians blurred the lines between rock and avantgarde. Brian Eno (34), ex-keyboardist for Roxy Music, changed the course of rock music at least three times. The experiment of fusing pop and electronics on Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy (sep 1974 - nov 1974) changed the very notion of what a "pop song" is. Eno took cheap melodies (the kind that are used at the music-hall, on television commercials, by nursery rhymes) and added a strong rhythmic base and counterpoint of synthesizer. The result was similar to the novelty numbers and the "bubblegum" music of the early 1960s, but it had the charisma of sheer post-modernist genius. Eno had invented meta-pop music: avantgarde music that employs elements of pop music. He continued the experiment on Another Green World (aug 1975 - sep 1975), but then changed its perspective on Before And After Science (? 1977 - dec 1977). Here Eno's catchy ditties acquired a sinister quality. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit". -

Darryl Way – Vivaldi’s Four Seasons In Rock (41:20, CD, Cherry Red Records- The Right Honourable Recording Company, 2018) Darryl Way dürfte den meisten Lesern durch sein Mitwirken bei Curved Air bekannt sein, oder auch durch seine Band Darryl Way’s Wolf (u.a. mit Ian Mosley. Auf dem Debütalbum von 1970 war er ebenso vertreten, wie auf den meisten Alben bis 1976 (auf dem 73er Album „Air Cut“ war an seiner Stelle ein gewisser Eddie Jobson aktiv). Bei „Alive 1990“ ist er noch einmal dabei, doch an der neuen Reinkarnation hat er nicht mehr teilgenommen. Zwar sind Curved Air nicht unbedingt in der allerersten Reihe der 70er Prog Dinos einzuordnen, doch sie konnten sich einen treuen Fankreis erarbeiten und erreichten durchaus einen gewissen Bekanntheitsgrad. Zu einem Herausstellungsmerkmal gehörte neben Frontfrau Sonja Kristina auch das prägnante Geigenspiel. Gleich auf dem Debütalbum „Air Conditioning“ ist ein Klassiker der Band zu finden, der seinerzeit auch zu den Höhepunkten ihrer Konzerte gehörte, nämlich der, logischerweise von Way arrangierte Titel ‚Vivaldi‘. He did it his way, sozusagen. Anscheinend stammt sein Arrangement aus dem Jahr 1968, denn im Booklet der vorliegenden CD steht geschrieben, dass sich Way pünktlich zum 50. Geburtstag seiner Klassik-Rock-Hymne an eine komplette Neueinspielung von Vivaldis „Die vier Jahreszeiten“ gewagt hat. Mit viel Respekt vor dem Original, das er für ein Beispiel musikalischer Perfektion hält, hat er sich vorgenommen, daraus eine Rock-Variante zu kreieren. Dabei hat er sich ganz bewusst sehr nah an der Vorlage bewegt, lediglich in langsameren Passagen hat er leichte Veränderungen zugelassen. Introduction While it is important that the Scottish Parliament continues to investigate and monitor the state of the creative and screen industries in Scotland, the time has surely come for action rather than continued deliberation(s) The time has surely come when we need to stop having endless working parties and spending money on consultants trying to work out what to do. Remember the ‘Yes Minister’ Law of Inverse Relevance ‘ ‘The less you intend to do about something, the more you have to keep talking about it ‘ ‘Yes Minister’ Episode 1: Open Government Therefore, please note that we already know what to do. That is: 1.1 - Appoint the right people with the vision leadership and energy to succeed. 1.2 - Provide a positive legislative/strategic/policy framework for support. 1.3 - Provide better budgets and funding for investment and/or leverage for the same. (You already have access to the data on existing funding for projects and programmes of all kinds. If the Scottish Government wishes to help to improve performance in the screen sector, there will need to be a step change in investment. There is widespread agreement that more is needed.) 1.4 Give them space to get on with it. That is what happened with the National Theatre of Scotland. This is what happened with MG Alba. Estuve meditando durante un tiempo hasta que la iluminación llego a mi mente y recordé cuales fueron mis orígenes en la música. Hace ya mucho tiempo, cuando era un adolescente, entre en el mundo del rock de la mano de lo que en aquella época se llamaba “rock sinfónico”. Mi fascinación por este género era total y el instrumento que me imaginaba tocando eran los teclados, con el tiempo comprendí que no tenía capacidad para asumir semejante tarea. Hablar de sintetizadores, órganos, mellotrones, etc, para mí sería un placer pero entiendo que para la mayoría de los mortales podría suponer un gran dolor de cabeza. Por todo ello creo que mi colaboración puede versar sobre los teclistas del rock. RICK WAKEMAN No pretendo contar exhaustivamente la obra y milagros de este genio, eso sería muy largo y tedioso, simplemente daré unas pinceladas sobre su trayectoria basándome en mi experiencia. Rick Wakeman nació en 1,949 en Perivale, Londres, y como era de esperar estudio diversos instrumentos entre ellos el piano, pero el bueno de Rick era un inconformista y no se regía por los cánones clásicos por lo cual fue expulsado del Royal College Music. -

Colosseum – 5 x Live in Concert – Restored & Remastered in 2020 Colosseum sind fraglos eine der beeindruckendsten Live-Bands, die der Autor je auf der Bühne erleben durfte – und trotz Reunions und anderer „zweiter Chancen“ (vgl. JCM) hat man sie gefühlt doch trotzdem einfach viel zu selten erlebt. Das ist auch nicht mehr aufholbar, seit Kopf, Seele und Sticks der Band in Gestalt von Jon Hiseman 2018 viel zu früh das Zeitliche segnete – übrigens unmittelbar nach einem weiteren ausgezeichneten Konzert… Und was kann in einer solchen Situation überhaupt Trost bieten, was kommt da wie gerufen? Bislang unbekannte Live- Aufnahmen natürlich! Doch nicht etwa fragwürdiges Bootleg- Gelumpe, sondern gehobener Standard von Repertoire Records. Und was vermutlich noch erheblich wichtiger ist: von keinem Geringeren remastered and restored as from our very own Joachim Heinz Ehrig alias Eroc! Colosseum – Live At The Boston Tea Party (49:27, CD, Repertoire Records 2020) It was indeed „The Summer of ’69“ (13.08.69)! Schlagzeug- „Gladiator“ Jon Hiseman und Saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith hatten sich bei der heute allein schon wegen der sich ergebenden Band-Stammbäume hyper-legendären Graham Bond Organisation kennengelernt, wo Hiseman 1966 immerhin so eben mal Ginger Baker abgelöst hatte. Und trafen sich beiJohn Mayall’s Bluesbreakers wieder – einem schier unglaublichen Talentschuppen, wo man zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten auch Eric Clapton, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout, Robben Ford oder Ainsley Dunbar hätte über den Weg laufen können. Im Frühjahr ’68 fühlten die beiden sich dann reif für ihr eigenes Ding und rekrutierten mit Tony Reeves (Bass) einen von Jons ältesten Kumpels und mitDave Greenslade einen bislang mehr dem Jazz verhafteten aber erwiesenen Tasten- Zauberer. -

As a kid in the '40s and '50s, I would sit in movies endlessly ... and think wouldn't it be great if you could see people in films like peo- ple actually are? Mike Leigh, The Salon Interview 1 I don't make films that are exclusively or idiosyncratically English; the subject matter of my films is not English, but universal. Mike Leigh, quoted in Movshovitz 2 Introduction In a 2008 interview for BAFTA (The British Academy of Film and Television Arts), the English movie director, Mike Leigh, recalled a moment of truth that he experienced during a life painting class at the Camberwell Art School in London in the mid 1960s.3 He had moved to London from Manchester in 1960, intending to train as an actor. At first, he attended RADA (the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts), but he found the experience very unsatisfactory. In Leigh's opinion, RADA's teaching was based on old-fashioned and unsuitable methods. In par ticular, he felt that there was no room for actors to bring their own interpretation of characters or experience of life into the process of creating a film or play.
