The (Im)Possibility of Adaptation in Alex Garland's Annihilation
The (Im)Possibility of Adaptation in Alex Garland’s Annihilation Emmanuelle Ben Hadj A 2018 article about Alex Garland’s science-fiction film Annihilation (2018) asks the question: “is Annihilation the first true film of the Anthropocene?”1 The answer is most likely no. The Anthropocene is a term created in 2000 by scientists Paul Crutzen and Eugene Stoermer to signify the importance of environmental change caused by humans. For decades, and even centuries, humanity has become a geological agent capable of reshaping planet Earth according to their own needs and desires. Our actions have altered the planet’s climate for the worse to the point of hindering the natural course of evolution. For this reason, scientists—though disagreements within the scientific community still exist—have felt the need to suggest the existence of a new geological era, the Anthropocene, that would follow the previous era of the Holocene. Selmin Kara coined the term “Anthropocenema” to talk about the trend of science fiction and other genre films depicting the consequences of anthropogenic actions on Earth.2 I would argue that it would be unfair to call Annihilation the first true film of the Anthropocene when the science fiction genre has been so prolific in tackling environmental disasters, with recent films such as Interstellar (Nolan, 2014), or older films like Andreï Tarkovski’s Stalker (1979) to which Annihilation is often compared. However, Alex Garland’s film certainly stands out in its refusal to compromise with humanity’s fate, hence its particularly negative and pessimistic representation of man. 38 The Henry James Review Appeals to Incalculability: Sex, Costume Drama, and The Golden Bowl By Dianne F. Sadoff, Miami University Sex is the last taboo in film. —Catherine Breillat Today’s “meat movie” is tomorrow’s blockbuster. —Carol J. Clover When it was released in May 2001, James Ivory’s film of Henry James’s final masterpiece, The Golden Bowl, received decidedly mixed reviews. Kevin Thomas calls it a “triumph”; Stephen Holden, “handsome, faithful, and intelligent” yet “emotionally distanced.” Given the successful—if not blockbuster—run of 1990s James movies—Jane Campion’s The Portrait of a Lady (1996), Agniezka Holland’s Washington Square (1997), and Iain Softley’s The Wings of the Dove (1997)—the reviewers, as well as the fans, must have anticipated praising The Golden Bowl. Yet the film opened in “selected cities,” as the New York Times movie ads noted; after New York and Los Angeles, it showed in university towns and large urban areas but not “at a theater near you” or at “theaters everywhere.” Never mind, however, for the Merchant Ivory film never intended to be popular with the masses. Seeking a middlebrow audience of upper-middle-class spectators and generally intelligent filmgoers, The Golden Bowl aimed to portray an English cultural heritage attractive to Anglo-bibliophiles. James’s faux British novel, however, is paradoxically peopled with foreigners: American upwardly mobile usurpers, an impoverished Italian prince, and a social-climbing but shabby ex- New York yentl. Yet James’s ironic portrait of this expatriate culture, whose characters seek only to imitate their Brit betters—if not in terms of wealth and luxury, at least in social charm and importance—failed to seem relevant to viewers The Henry James Review 23 (2002): 38–52. -

The films in the series span a period of nearly 50 years, opening with Malick’s 1970s breakthroughs Badlands (1973) and Days of Heaven (1978), through his career-revival masterworks The Thin Red Line (1998) and The New World (2005), and continuing with his 21st- century films—from Cannes Palme d’Or winner The Tree of Life (2011); the trio of To the Wonder (2012), Knight of Cups (2015), and Song to Song (2017); and sole documentary project Voyage of Time (2016)—through to this year’s A Hidden Life. Two of these films will be presented in alternate versions—Voyage of Time and The New World—a testament to Malick’s ambitious and exploratory approach to editing. In addition to Malick’s own feature films, the series includes Pocket Money (1972), an ambling buddy comedy with Lee Marvin and Paul Newman, which he wrote (but did not direct), and Thy Kingdom Come (2018), the documentary featurette shot on the set of To the Wonder by photographer Eugene Richards.
