The Institute, national professional society of certified pub­ lic accountants, was founded in 1887 as the American Association of Public Accountants. Its name was changed inl916 to the American Institute of Accountants. Through amalgamation with other accounting societies, it is now the only national organization of certified public accountants. The maintenance of high professional standards and pro­ fessional ethics is one of the major functions of the Institute. The American Place Theatre was founded in 1964 and stewarded by the artistic mission of Wynn Handman. It has earned its own place in American theatrical history. Prior dissertations have chronicled specific elements of the American Place Theatre (APT), but no account has bridged the history of APT and Wynn Handman’s privately-run acting studio to the significant history of Literature to Life. The once New York City-based program that promoted English, cultural and theatrical literacy to students within the city’s public iii school system, now has a strong national following and continues to inspire students and adults across the country. This thesis will chart an historical and narrative account of Literature to Life as it emerged from the embers of the American Place Theatre and rekindled the original mission of Wynn Handman, in a different setting and for new audiences.

He attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania until 1942, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he graduated from Lincoln in 1946. During this time, he studied French through Middlebury College's summer language program. He received his master's degree from Columbia University, then taught briefly at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Browne master's degree from Columbia University, then taught briefly at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Browne also found success as an athlete, winning two American indoor championships and setting records in the 800 meters, and winning the 1951 world championship. After a knee injury hampered his athletic career, Browne worked as the national sales representative for Schenley Import Corporation. He began his acting career with a small role in a 1956 New York Shakespeare Festival production of 'Julius Caesar.' Soon thereafter, Browne became an understudy for Ossie Davis’ performance in 'Purlie Victorious.' Although Browne played the character of Archibald in 'The Blacks,' a play that launched numerous other African American stars, Browne’s career did not take off until his 1963 performance in the off-Broadway play 'Benito Cereno.' He would reprise this role again in both 1965 and 1976.

    AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA CINEMA AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA The history of the African-American Cinema is a harsh timeline of racism, repression and struggle contrasted with film scenes of boundless joy, hope and artistic spirit. Until recently, the study of the "separate cinema" (a phrase used by historians John Kisch and Edward Mapp to describe the segregation of the mainstream, Hollywood film community) was limited, if not totally ignored, by writers and researchers. The uphill battle by black filmmakers and performers, to achieve acceptance and respect, was an ugly blot on the pages of film history. Now in its fourth year, and featuring films produced since 2013, this annual film festival brings human rights struggles to life through storytelling. With almost 100 films in competition, the Official Selection features thirteen independent documentaries from nine different countries, including seven New York premieres and five world premieres.
