THE LIFE BEHIND LITERATURE TO LIFE: A HISTORY AND NARRATIVE OF WYNN HANDMAN, THE AMERICAN PLACE THEATRE, AND LITERATURE TO LIFE A THESIS IN Theatre Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS by TRACY TERSTRIEP-HERBER B.A., University of California, 1992 Kansas City, Missouri 2013 ©2013 TRACY TERSTRIEP-HERBER ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE LIFE BEHIND LITERATURE TO LIFE: A HISTORY AND NARRATIVE OF WYNN HANDMAN, THE AMERICAN PLACE THEATRE, AND LITERATURE TO LIFE Tracy Terstriep-Herber, Candidate for the Master of Arts Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2012 ABSTRACT Literature to Life is a performance-based literacy program developed under the auspices of The American Place Theatre in New York City (1994). The American Place Theatre was founded in 1964 and stewarded by the artistic mission of Wynn Handman. It has earned its own place in American theatrical history. Prior dissertations have chronicled specific elements of the American Place Theatre (APT), but no account has bridged the history of APT and Wynn Handman’s privately-run acting studio to the significant history of Literature to Life. The once New York City-based program that promoted English, cultural and theatrical literacy to students within the city’s public iii school system, now has a strong national following and continues to inspire students and adults across the country. This thesis will chart an historical and narrative account of Literature to Life as it emerged from the embers of the American Place Theatre and rekindled the original mission of Wynn Handman, in a different setting and for new audiences.

  • Belknap Collection for the Performing Arts - the AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA COLLECTION
AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA CINEMA AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA The history of the African-American Cinema is a harsh timeline of racism, repression and struggle contrasted with film scenes of boundless joy, hope and artistic spirit. Until recently, the study of the "separate cinema" (a phrase used by historians John Kisch and Edward Mapp to describe the segregation of the mainstream, Hollywood film community) was limited, if not totally ignored, by writers and researchers. The uphill battle by black filmmakers and performers, to achieve acceptance and respect, was an ugly blot on the pages of film history. Upon winning his Best Actor Oscar for LILLIES OF THE FIELD (1963), Sidney Poitier accepted, on behalf of the countless unsung African-American artists, by acknowledging the "long journey to this moment." This emotional, heartbreaking and inspiring journey is vividly illustrated by the latest acquisition to the Belknap Collection for the Performing Arts - THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA COLLECTION. The valuable research material, housed in this collection, includes over 300 pressbooks (illustrated campaign and advertising catalogs sent to theatre owners), press kits (media packages including biographies, promotional essays and illustrations), programs and over 1000 photographs and slides. The journey begins with the blatant racism of D.W. Griffith's THE BIRTH OF A NATION (1915), a film respected as an epic milestone, but reviled as the blueprint for black film stereotypes that would appear throughout the 20th century. Researchers will follow African-American films through an extended period of stereotypical casting (SONG OF THE SOUTH, 1946) and will be dazzled by the glorious "All-Negro" musicals such as STORMY WEATHER (1943), ST.LOUIS BLUES (1958) and PORGY AND BESS (1959).

Now in its fourth year, and featuring films produced since 2013, this annual film festival brings human rights struggles to life through storytelling. The festival will run from September 29 to October 1, 2014 at the Instituto Cervantes NY. With almost 100 films in competition, the Official Selection features thirteen independent documentaries from nine different countries, including seven New York premieres and five world premieres. This year’s program focuses on consumption and capitalism, in addition to historical memory and governmental abuse of power. The festival will launch on September 29 with Vencidx (Defeated,) a world premiere documentary featuring first-person testimonies about the Spanish Civil War, unveiling individual efforts to recover a country’s historical memory. The closing night lineup, on October 1, will include three inspirational films from the Middle East, Morocco and the U.S. The last film, 1971, will remind us that before Watergate, WikiLeaks and Edward Snowden, there was Media, Pennsylvania. A story that will inspire audiences — young and old — and encourage them to think hard about the relevance of nonviolent, civil disobedience while reminding people what it means to be an engaged citizen.
