The National Fisheries Author- ity (NFA) had revised the National Bêche-de-mer Fishery Management Plan (the Plan) prior to the fishery opening and allocated provincial total allowable catch (TAC) quotas based on estimated fishable stocks of sea cucumber in each maritime province. This article presents the results of a study on the sea cucumber fishery (harvest of live animals, processing and selling of beche-de-mer) from three island communities in the Tigak Islands of the New Ireland Province (NIP). Almost 35,000 sea cucumbers that belong to 21 species were recorded from 10 days of catch monitoring. Catch composition and fishing patterns varied between villages and survey times. However, medium- and low-value species replaced high-value species and catch-per-unit-effort (by number and weight) decreased as the fishery progressed. The NIP fishery was closed eight weeks after opening, and the TAC of 43 tonnes (t) was exceeded by at least 36 t. Results from the study highlight the need to increase awareness of fisheries regulations (particularly species size limits to reduce the amount of undersized beche-de-mer that is brought in for sale), to strengthen the reporting requirements for companies and also to implement extension services to improve processing so as to lower the high rejection rates of poorly processed beche-de-mer. This study was aimed at determining the expression of GFSKLYFamide-like neuropeptide in the female gonad of the sea cucumber Holothuria scabra. Ten female H. scabra weighing between 62 and 175 g were collected at different times between May, 2009 and April, 2010 from the Andaman Sea at Koh Jum Island in Krabi province of Thailand for the study. Using GFSKLYFamide polyclonal antibody and Alexa 488-conjugated goat anti-rabbit IgG as primary and secondary antibodies, respectively, indirect immunofluorescence method and confocal microscope was used to localise GFSKLYFamide-like immunoreactivity in the female gonad of H. scabra. The results show GFSKLYFamide-like immunoreactivity being expressed in the sub-epithelial fibres of the coelomic epithelium.

The delicate shells are entirely internalized. The body is very small compared to the foot, which is dorso-ventrally flattened and contains the digestive diverticula and the fertile parts of the gonads. Even though the gills are small, they probably serve in collecting suspended matter, and in addition, the species clearly feeds on benthic diatoms, which it probably sorts out from the contents of the host’s gut. The species is a protandric hermaphrodite. Most males have a total length of 1.5–3.0 mm and above that size start changing sex to become females, which may attain a total length of nearly nine mm. Sperm is transferred in spermatophores with a solid wall produced by glands within the male siphon. One to three spermatophores are placed on the gills of females and the ova become fertilized as they pass from the genital pores to the siphon, where they are brooded until released as D-larvae. Sea cucumbers have long been exploited in traditional treatment as a source of natural medicinal compounds. Various nutritional and therapeutic values have been linked to this invertebrate. These creatures have been eaten since ancient times and purported as the most commonly consumed echinoderms. Some important biological activities of sea cucumbers including anti-hypertension, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-asthmatic, anti-bacterial and wound healing. Thus, this short review comes with the principal aim to cover the profile, taxonomy, together with nutritional and medicinal properties of sea cucumbers. Keywords: sea cucumber; invertebrate; echinoderm; therapeutic; taxonomy. 1.0 Introduction Sea cucumbers are marine invertebrate under phylum Echinodermata (Kamarudin et al., 2017). This cylindrical invertebrate that lives throughout the worlds’ oceans bed is known as sea cucumber or ‘gamat’ in Malaysia (Kamarudin et al., 2017). There are more than 1200 sea cucumber species available of varying morphology and colours throughout the world (Oh et al., 2017). Within the coastal areas of Malaysia, sea cucumbers can be located in Semporna Island, Pangkor Island, Tioman Island, Langkawi Island and coastal areas within Terengganu.

    38 SPC Beche-de-mer Information Bulletin #34 – May 2014 Parastichopus regalis — The main host of Carapus acus in temperate waters of the Mediterranean Sea and northeastern Atlantic Ocean Mercedes González-Wangüemert1,*, Camilla Maggi2, Sara Valente1, Jose Martínez-Garrido1 and Nuno Vasco Rodrigues3 Abstract Pearlfish, Carapus acus, live in association with several species of sea cucumbers. Its occurrence in hosts is largely dependent on host availability and its distribution from potential larval areas. The occurrence of Carapus acus in six sea cucumbers species from the Mediterranean Sea and northeastern Atlantic Ocean was assessed. The sea cucumber species Parastichopus regalis was the only host detected. Pearlfish from southeastern Spain (21 individuals) ranged in length from 7.0 cm to 21.5 cm. Two sea cucumbers from the area around Valencia harboured two adult fish each. These pairs of pearlfish, which were sampled during the summer, were able to breed inside of P. regalis, an event already noted by other authors. Pearlfish do not seem to choose their host according its size, as the correlation between fish length and host weight was not significant. Introduction Carapus acus (Brünnich, 1768) is a species recorded throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Symbiosis, the close relationship between west coast of North Africa in depths of 1–150 m organisms of different species, can occur in (Nielsen et al. 1999). It is common in the western the marine environment and, in relation to the Mediterranean Sea, mainly around Italy, Spain and species involved, can take place in various forms, France, and also occurs in the Adriatic and Aegean such as mutualism, commensalism or parasitism seas.

Sea cucumbers (Holothuroidea) are one of the high value marine products, with populations under very critical condition due to over exploitation. Data and information related to the condition of sea cucumber communities, especially in remote islands, like the Sapeken Islands, Sumenep Regency, East Java, Indonesia, is still very limited. This study aimed to determine the species, community structure (density, frequency, and important value index), species diversity index, and distribution patterns of sea cucumbers found in the reef area of Sapeken Islands, using a quantitative descriptive study. This research was conducted in low tide during the day using the quadratic transect method. Data was collected by making direct observations of the population under investigation. The results showed that sea cucumbers belonged to 11 species, from 2 orders: Aspidochirotida, with the species Holothuria hilla, Holothuria fuscopunctata, Holothuria impatiens, Holothuria leucospilota, Holothuria scabra, Stichopus horrens, Stichopus variegates, Actinopyga lecanora, and Actinopyga mauritiana and order Apodida, with the species Synapta maculata and Euapta godeffroyi. The density ranged from 0.162 to 1.37 ind m-2, and the relative density was between 0.035 and 0.292 ind m-2. The highest density was found for H. hilla and the lowest for S.
