“We didn’t have outdoor facilities, so me and my brother trained in the warehouse. “Everyone talks about it being so hard to leave home but it was something I always wanted to do. I knew I was going to leave Iceland and I was always happy.” Sigurdsson’s family had joined him in England when he was loaned to Shrewsbury Town, a wispy 17-year-old sent for survival training in the roughhouse of League Two. Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson was unsurprised to find himself “struggling to get Gylfi off the training pitch” after receiving prior warning of the player’s prodigious work ethic from Reading coach Kevin Dillon. Gudjon Thordarson, who took Sigurdsson on a subsequent loan to Crewe Alexandra, ran into the same problem. “I had to go out on the training ground to tell him to stop,” recalled manager Thordarson. “I think it was ingrained in me,” Sigurdsson acknowledges. “Shooting is what I enjoy most about football. “When I was back in Iceland and at Reading as well, I used to do 15, 20 minutes…” he grins sheepishly “…30 minutes after training, depending how tough it had been. “I know my body now, I know when to stop. Sigurdsson monitored Everton’s results “for a number of years” after his initial encounter with the Blues. “But then I went to Reading and started focussing on that.” His one full season in the Berkshire club’s first-team amounted to a personal tour de force. Sigurdsson scored 20 goals in 2009-10 and was the runaway winner of the club’s player-of-the-year prize.

ere’s a curious thing. Dave Jones is missing out on jobs because of his “lack of experience”. HHe would like to work as a technical director, an international manager, perhaps. Jones recently submitted his CV for the post of Hong Kong national team boss. “I go for an international job and they want someone who has been on the international scene – regardless of whether they’ve been successful,” says Jones. “But how do you get that experience? “Football is a strange business sometimes.” Jones has managed more than 1,000 matches and played professionally for a decade after being spied by an Everton scout excelling for Walton Boys Club. “I just adore the game, I could talk about football all day,” says Jones. y sse Aside from Zaha, what other players ne en are key for Hodgson? H e n y I think Wayne Hennessey a W is one of the most talented keepers in the Premier League. He has done it for Wales on a consistent basis and he is having a fabulous season for Palace. The centre-backs are vital, too. Mamadou Sakho and James Tomkins are big players and important leaders for us. We mkins To just need to find that attacking edge es m and I think we’ll be fine. If Christian Ja Benteke, when’s he’s back from injury, and Jordan Ayew can find their scoring touch, that will be a real boost.

How does the manager like to set up his team? He usually plays a 4-4-2 or a 4-5-1. It is a good, solid foundation to build from. It’s one of Roy’s strengths – tactically he keeps it simple. His predecessor, , tried to complicate it more with a back five. The lads now know the drill, it’s consistent and I think that’s been the key for Roy.

Where do you believe Everton’s main threats will come from? Where do I start?! Gylfi Sigurdsson is

in great form. He is just an outrageous EVERTON FC talent. Richarlison has really hit the ground running, too. He is dynamic and fast and, as he trains with the

quality Everton have got in their OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME squad, he is just going to improve. The Everton team is starting to really come together. From what I’ve seen in the past few weeks, they’re starting to play to their potential.

Finally, what is your prediction for the game? It’s a tough one to call. My heart would say a Palace win but I’ll go for a 2-2 draw.
